Choose Residential when your Starlink terminal will serve one registered home address. It includes unlimited Residential data and is the simpler household option, but it does not support roaming or in-motion use. Choose Roam when the terminal must travel between locations, support an RV or camping setup, or connect in motion where Starlink and local law allow it. Roam’s price, high-speed allowance, travel territory and post-allowance speed vary by market.
The practical decision is not simply “unlimited versus mobile.” Check where you will use the dish, whether it must work while moving, how much high-speed Roam data your local offer includes, what happens after that allowance, and whether pause/resume rules fit your schedule.

Residential and Roam in one sentence
Residential is a fixed-location internet service for personal or household use at the registered land address. Roam is a portable service designed for travel and use at changing locations. Residential does not include roaming; using it at another address requires a Roam plan or another service option shown in your account.

Core differences at a glance
| Decision point | Residential | Roam |
|---|---|---|
| Designed for | Personal or household use at one registered, fixed land-based address. | Portable land-based use and travel between permitted locations. |
| Use away from registered address | Roaming is not supported; a Roam plan is required for service elsewhere. | Allowed locations depend on the tier, registered country or region, destination and current policy. |
| Data treatment | Unlimited Residential data, with local speed tiers and possible congestion-related slowdowns. | Tier dependent. A metered tier can provide a high-speed allowance followed by unlimited lower-speed service; an Unlimited tier has different terms. |
| In-motion use | Not supported. | Available only in authorized locations with a compatible plan and hardware, and subject to local law. |
| Pausing | Standby Mode availability varies by country, account and hardware; some Residential customers cannot pause. | Standby Mode may allow pausing without data in eligible markets, subject to current exceptions. |
| Price | Regional and address dependent. A UK snapshot checked October 13, 2026 listed £40, £60 and £80 monthly tiers. | Regional and tier dependent. The same UK snapshot listed £55 monthly for Roam 100GB and £100 for Roam Unlimited. |
What Residential includes—and what it does not
Fixed registered location
Residential is tied to the service address selected when you order. It is intended for a house, apartment, cabin or other permanent household location. The plan is not a general-purpose travel subscription: Starlink’s Residential guidance excludes roaming and in-motion operation.
Unlimited Residential data, with performance caveats
Starlink describes Residential data as unlimited. “Unlimited” means there is no stated monthly high-speed quota like the metered Roam allowance; it does not promise a fixed throughput at all times. Your local Residential tier can have a speed cap, and actual performance can fall during busy periods. Starlink’s Fair Use Policy also says stated speeds and uninterrupted service are not guaranteed.
When a second address creates a problem
If you split time between a primary home and a second property, do not assume moving the dish will work automatically. Residential is not intended to roam. Before relocating equipment, check the service address and the plan-change options in your account; otherwise the terminal may be outside its authorized location.

The 2026 change from 50GB to 100GB
On January 13, 2026, Starlink announced that it doubled Roam 50GB to 100GB at no additional cost in most markets. The change is market-specific and does not mean every customer worldwide sees the same tier or price. Confirm the allowance displayed for your address before ordering.
What happens after a metered allowance
Roam 100GB provides a monthly high-speed allowance under the applicable offer. After that allowance is used, the cited Roam notice says service continues with unlimited low-speed data. Basic calls and text messaging may remain usable, while streaming, large downloads and video calls can become limited. “Unlimited” after the allowance should therefore not be read as unlimited high-speed broadband.
Plan your allowance around the activities that consume the most data. Video meetings, high-definition streaming, cloud backups, operating-system updates and large downloads can use the high-speed allotment quickly. Navigation, email, messaging and light web pages are generally less demanding, but the actual experience depends on congestion and the reduced post-allowance speed. If work requires reliable video calls every day, compare the metered tier with the local Roam Unlimited offer rather than assuming low-speed service will be adequate.
Roam Unlimited is a separate offer
Starlink’s Fair Use Policy lists both Roam Unlimited and metered Roam variants, including 100GB. The plan shown in your account depends on your market and current availability. Compare the actual allowance, speed behavior, travel territory and monthly charge rather than relying on the word “Unlimited” alone. Unlimited does not remove territorial, in-motion, congestion or equipment conditions.

Mobility and in-motion operation
Travel while stationary
Roam is the relevant option when you carry a terminal between campsites, temporary work locations or other permitted land-based destinations. Coverage still depends on the destination and the plan’s territorial rules. A Roam subscription does not automatically authorize use in every country.
Using Starlink while moving
Starlink’s in-motion guidance says Roam and certain Priority plans can support operation at speeds up to 100 mph (160 km/h) in authorized locations. That statement is conditional: the country must permit the use, the plan must include it, and the terminal and mounting hardware must meet the applicable requirements. Residential is excluded.
Land-use prohibitions, maritime rules, radio regulations and equipment constraints can apply. Verify the destination and vehicle or vessel use in your Starlink account before installing a dish for a moving application. Do not treat the 100 mph figure as a universal approval or a promise that every terminal can operate safely at that speed. A portable kit may still need a suitable power source, unobstructed sky view and a secure mount; the plan alone does not supply those requirements.
International travel limits
Roam’s international behavior is tier and region dependent. A current Ireland help page, for example, says Roam Unlimited can provide up to 30 days outside the registered home country at a time. Other listed tiers may be limited to the home country or specified grouped regions and can require an upgrade and travel registration. This is market-specific guidance, not a worldwide rule.
For an international trip, check four items in your account before departure:

- The countries or regions authorized by your exact Roam tier.
- How long you may remain outside the registered country.
- Whether travel registration or a plan upgrade is required.
- Whether local law permits Starlink land or in-motion operation at the destination.
Do not infer international rights from a neighboring country’s offer. The registered country, destination, plan family and current service policy all matter. If a trip crosses several borders, verify each destination rather than relying on the first country’s approval.
Pausing service with Standby Mode
Standby Mode is Starlink’s pause mechanism, but eligibility is not universal. Country-specific exceptions, account status, plan type and hardware can affect whether the option appears. Some countries listed by Starlink do not allow Residential customers to pause, while eligible Roam customers may be able to pause without data during inactive periods.
Because pause terms can change, open your account and confirm the current Standby Mode rules before choosing a plan for seasonal use. A user who expects to pause a Residential line every winter should not assume that feature is available merely because another market offers it. Check when a pause takes effect, how billing is displayed, and what action resumes full service.
Prices and availability: use local figures, not global assumptions
Starlink prices and tiers vary by service address and can change without the same offer appearing in another country. The following figures are a UK service-plans snapshot checked October 13, 2026; they are examples, not worldwide prices.
| Plan shown in UK snapshot | Monthly price | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Residential 100 Mbps | £40 | Monthly Residential tier shown on the UK page at the stated check date. |
| Residential 200 Mbps | £60 | Monthly Residential tier shown on the UK page at the stated check date. |
| Residential Max | £80 | Monthly Residential tier shown on the UK page at the stated check date. |
| Roam 100GB | £55 | Monthly metered Roam tier shown on the UK page at the stated check date. |
| Roam Unlimited | £100 | Monthly Roam tier shown on the UK page at the stated check date. |
These prices do not establish equipment charges, taxes, installation costs or future pricing. Enter your exact address on Starlink’s current plan page and review the checkout terms; the live offer is the relevant one for your location. Also compare the one-time terminal cost and any mounting or power accessories needed for a vehicle or seasonal installation.
Which plan fits common situations?
One family home, used every day
Residential is usually the straightforward choice when the dish stays at one address. Its unlimited Residential data avoids tracking a monthly Roam allowance, and you can select the local speed tier that matches your household’s needs and budget. Expect performance to vary with congestion and the selected tier.
RV or camper that moves between sites
Start with Roam. Confirm that each destination is authorized, that the allowance is sufficient for navigation, work and entertainment, and that the terminal can be mounted and powered safely. If you plan to connect while driving, separately verify in-motion authorization and hardware requirements.

Residential is not a camping pass. Taking the terminal to a campsite is roaming, even if the campsite is in the same country. Compare the cost of adding or switching to an eligible Roam tier with the amount of travel you expect, and check whether Standby Mode can reduce charges during unused months.
Home plus a second property
If the terminal will alternate between two addresses, Roam may be more suitable, but its travel territory and data terms must fit both locations. If it will remain permanently at the second property, a separate Residential service address may be more predictable than repeatedly moving one account.
Remote work from a moving vehicle or boat
Do not choose solely on the word “Roam.” Confirm the exact country, route, speed, vehicle or vessel category, hardware and local authorization. A plan can be travel-oriented while a particular route or installation remains prohibited. For a boat, check maritime eligibility separately; land-based Roam language does not automatically authorize every maritime use.
Seasonal cabin or occasional field work
Decide whether the terminal remains at the cabin or travels with you. A fixed seasonal address points toward Residential if that address is eligible, while a terminal carried to changing job sites points toward Roam. If the service sits unused for part of the year, verify Standby Mode eligibility and the billing effect before selecting a plan.

A practical selection checklist
- List every location. Write down the registered home, regular travel destinations and any countries you may visit.
- Mark movement. Decide whether the terminal will be used only while parked or also while a vehicle or vessel is moving.
- Estimate data. Add video meetings, streaming, software updates, cloud backups and downloads. Compare that estimate with the Roam high-speed allowance offered at your address.
- Read the after-allowance rule. Confirm whether the tier becomes unlimited low-speed service and whether that speed is adequate for your essential tasks.
- Check pause eligibility. Open the Standby Mode terms for your country, plan and hardware before counting on seasonal suspension.
- Compare the live price. Enter your service address and record the monthly charge, tier name and any one-time equipment costs shown at checkout.
- Verify equipment. Confirm that the terminal and mounting arrangement support the intended stationary or in-motion use; a portable plan does not prove every kit is compatible.
- Confirm legal authorization. Check destination-specific land, radio and maritime rules instead of assuming that service availability equals permission to operate.
Switching between Residential and Roam
Plan changes are account-specific and can depend on your market. Before switching, capture the current plan name, billing date, data terms and pause status. A user who changes from Residential for a trip should verify when the new plan takes effect and whether returning to Residential requires a new service address or other account action.

- This is not an official starlink bundle. Purchasing this item does not come with a Starlink warranty.
- This is not Starlink. You will not receive a warranty with this bundle created by an outside seller.
Do not buy a second terminal solely because a plan is mobile. Starlink’s plan information does not establish that a new terminal is required in every market. Check the current equipment and account requirements first, especially if you already own a compatible portable kit. Conversely, do not assume a Residential terminal is suitable for in-motion installation just because a Roam subscription can travel.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming Residential works at a holiday home: Residential is fixed to its registered location. Use an eligible Roam plan or arrange service for the second address.
- Reading “unlimited” as unlimited speed: Residential can slow during congestion, and Roam metered tiers can continue only at lower speed after the high-speed allowance.
- Treating Roam as globally valid: International access, time outside the home country and grouped regions depend on the tier and current policy.
- Installing for motion without authorization: In-motion support is conditional on country, plan, hardware and local rules; Residential is not permitted for it.
- Budgeting from another country’s price: Prices are address-specific. A UK figure cannot be used to predict a US, Irish or other market offer.
- Counting on pausing: Standby Mode has country and account exceptions. Confirm eligibility in the account instead of relying on a generic description.
- Buying hardware before checking the plan: Equipment compatibility, mounting and power requirements can differ by use case. Confirm the current kit and account rules first.
- Using the 100GB figure everywhere: The January 2026 increase applied at no extra cost in most markets, but local tiers and allowances can differ.
Bottom line for 2026
Residential is the better fit for a household that needs dependable service at one fixed address and wants unlimited Residential data under its local speed and congestion conditions. Roam is the better fit when portability is the primary requirement, provided its allowance, low-speed behavior, travel territory, in-motion permissions and pause rules match the way you will actually use it.
The most important details are local. Starlink’s January 13, 2026 increase from 50GB to 100GB changed the metered Roam offer in most markets, but it did not make every Roam plan identical. Check the live plan shown for your address immediately before ordering or traveling.
Frequently Asked Questions
