Starfield PC Requirements and Upgrade Guide: What Hardware Do You Need?

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run Starfield on PC, Bethesda lists a Ryzen 5 2600X or Core i7-6800K, Radeon RX 5700 or GeForce GTX 1070 Ti, 16 GB of RAM, DirectX 12, Windows 10 version 21H1, 125 GB of free space, and an SSD as the minimum. Its recommended tier moves to a Ryzen 5 3600X or Core i5-10600K and a Radeon RX 6800 XT or GeForce RTX 2080. Both tiers still specify 16 GB of memory, DirectX 12, 125 GB available, and solid-state storage. These labels describe hardware classes; Bethesda does not promise a particular frame rate, resolution, or graphics preset for either tier.

Official Starfield PC requirements

Bethesda’s current PC requirements divide hardware into minimum and recommended tiers. The table below keeps the manufacturer’s model names intact so you can compare your computer without guessing at an equivalent part.

Requirement Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 10 version 21H1 (10.0.19043) Windows 10 or Windows 11 with updates
Processor AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800K AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel Core i5-10600K
Memory 16 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
Graphics card AMD Radeon RX 5700 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080
DirectX DirectX 12 DirectX 12
Storage 125 GB available, SSD required 125 GB available, SSD required
Internet Not stated in the minimum list Broadband internet listed

Steam’s listing reflects the same major tiers. Neither published list identifies a target resolution, quality preset, or frames-per-second figure. A computer that meets “minimum” is not automatically a 60-fps system, and “recommended” is not a guarantee of any specific frame rate.

What the two tiers actually tell you

Minimum is a compatibility floor

The minimum list identifies the oldest processor and graphics-card class Bethesda chose to support. It is useful for deciding whether an installation is worth attempting, but it does not describe the visual settings or fluidity you will obtain. A system can match every line and still need lower settings, resolution scaling, or a frame-rate cap in demanding scenes.

Recommended is a higher performance class, not a benchmark

The recommended CPUs and GPUs are substantially newer or faster than the minimum examples. Bethesda does not attach a measured test, game preset, or monitor resolution to them, so treat the tier as guidance for a stronger baseline rather than a performance contract.

Why model names matter

Do not decide from a brand name alone. “Radeon,” “GeForce,” “Core,” and “Ryzen” cover many generations and performance levels. Compare the complete model number in Windows or your system documentation with the exact names in the table. A newer-sounding part is not automatically equivalent, and a laptop version of a chip can perform differently from its desktop counterpart.

Check your PC before buying anything

Make an inventory first. This avoids replacing a component that was already adequate or buying a part your motherboard, power supply, case, or laptop cannot use.

  1. Identify the processor. In Windows, open Settings, choose System, then About, and read the processor field. Record the full model, including its suffix. You can also press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open Task Manager, and select the Performance tab.
  2. Identify the graphics processor. In Task Manager > Performance, select each GPU entry. On a desktop, note the discrete card; on a laptop, record both integrated and discrete GPUs because the game may launch on the wrong one.
  3. Check installed memory. Task Manager’s Performance > Memory view shows total RAM. Bethesda lists 16 GB for both tiers, so verify that your machine actually has that amount available to Windows.
  4. Verify Windows version. Press Windows + R, enter winver, and confirm the edition and build. The minimum wording is Windows 10 version 21H1 (10.0.19043); the recommended entry allows Windows 10 or Windows 11 with updates.
  5. Confirm DirectX. Press Windows + R, enter dxdiag, and check the DirectX version on the System tab. The requirement is DirectX 12.
  6. Measure free space on the intended drive. In File Explorer, right-click the drive and choose Properties. You need at least 125 GB available for the installation, and that drive must be an SSD rather than a hard disk drive.

Keep the results together in a note. If any item is unclear, use the computer manufacturer’s support page or the motherboard manual rather than assuming compatibility from a product’s name.

Upgrade priorities when a component falls short

1. Move the game from an HDD to an SSD

Solid-state storage is an explicit requirement, not an optional optimization. If the game is installed on a mechanical hard drive, move or reinstall it to an SSD before replacing other parts. Bethesda does not specify SATA versus NVMe, a minimum read speed, or a 1 TB capacity. The stated storage requirement is 125 GB available; any additional capacity is a practical choice for Windows, updates, and other games.

For a desktop, check whether the motherboard and case accept a 2.5-inch SATA drive, an M.2 SATA module, an M.2 NVMe module, or more than one type. For a laptop, consult the service manual: some machines have one replaceable drive, while others have soldered storage or a second slot that requires a particular length. Shut down and disconnect power before opening a system, and make a backup before cloning or reinstalling.

2. Upgrade the graphics card if it is below the minimum

The minimum GPU examples are Radeon RX 5700 and GeForce GTX 1070 Ti; the recommended examples are Radeon RX 6800 XT and GeForce RTX 2080. Use the exact model in your inventory rather than a series name. A GPU upgrade can be limited by the power supply’s wattage and connectors, the case’s card length and thickness, motherboard slot clearance, and the processor’s ability to keep up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check the power supply label for continuous wattage and the required PCIe power plugs.
  • Measure the case’s maximum card length and available expansion-slot thickness.
  • Confirm that the motherboard has a full-length PCI Express slot and that adjacent slots will not block airflow.
  • Update the motherboard firmware and remove old graphics drivers according to the GPU manufacturer’s instructions before installing the new card.
  • Plan airflow: a faster card may add substantial heat, and an existing case fan layout may be inadequate.

Bethesda’s requirement page does not establish performance equivalence between unlisted cards. If your model is not named, independent benchmarks for the specific game and resolution would be needed to predict results; the requirement table alone cannot do that.

  • UPGRADE WITH EASE: Using the 870 EVO SSD is as simple as plugging it into the standard 2.5 inch SATA form factor on your desktop PC or laptop; The renewed migration software takes care of the rest

3. Replace or add a processor only after checking the platform

The minimum CPU examples are Ryzen 5 2600X and Core i7-6800K; the recommended examples are Ryzen 5 3600X and Core i5-10600K. Processor upgrades are constrained by the motherboard socket, chipset support, firmware version, memory type, cooler mounting, and power delivery. A desktop may need a new motherboard and possibly new RAM when changing CPU generations. Many laptops cannot replace the processor at all.

Check the motherboard’s supported-CPU list and required BIOS version before ordering. Confirm that the cooler can dissipate the replacement chip’s heat and that the power supply has sufficient headroom. A CPU change that leaves the existing graphics card below minimum will not solve the graphics requirement.

4. Treat 16 GB as the published memory target

Bethesda lists 16 GB for minimum and recommended configurations and does not state that more is required. If your computer has less, adding memory may be necessary to meet the published floor. Match the motherboard’s memory generation, capacity limits, slot arrangement, and supported speed. On a laptop, verify whether modules are replaceable or partly soldered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Going beyond 16 GB can help a system that runs many other applications simultaneously, but the cited requirement does not claim a Starfield-specific benefit from a larger amount. Do not sacrifice a required SSD or an adequate GPU simply to buy extra RAM.

Operating-system and software prerequisites

Windows version and updates

The minimum entry names Windows 10 version 21H1, build 10.0.19043. The recommended entry says Windows 10 or Windows 11 with updates. Run Windows Update, restart, and install optional hardware-driver updates only when they are appropriate for your system. If your build is older than the listed minimum, update Windows before troubleshooting game crashes.

DirectX 12

DirectX 12 is required in both tiers. The dxdiag tool reports the installed DirectX version, while the graphics driver’s support determines whether the hardware can actually run the required feature set. Installing a newer runtime cannot turn an unsupported GPU into a DirectX 12-capable one.

Broadband internet

Bethesda includes broadband internet in the recommended list. The requirement table does not provide a speed number or state that a particular connection is needed for every mode. A reliable connection is still useful for downloading the game, updates, authentication, and any online services the platform requires.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install Starfield on the correct drive

  1. Open your PC game launcher and start the installation process.
  2. When the destination dialog appears, select a drive identified as solid-state storage. In Windows, you can check a drive in Task Manager > Performance; the model information and media type help distinguish an SSD from an HDD.
  3. Confirm that the destination has at least 125 GB free before starting. Leave additional headroom for updates and normal Windows operation rather than filling the drive completely.
  4. After installation, open the launcher or the game’s properties and verify that the library location points to the SSD. If you moved the files, use the launcher’s built-in move or locate function instead of dragging folders manually.
  5. Start the game once, allow shader compilation or first-run setup to finish, and then adjust graphics options gradually. Change one major setting at a time so you can identify which adjustment affects stability or smoothness.

Troubleshoot a system that meets the requirements

Meeting the table does not rule out installation or launch problems. Bethesda’s performance guidance recommends several checks that do not require buying hardware.

  • Boot up faster. Load files quicker. Improve overall system responsiveness
  • 300% faster than a typical hard drive
  • Improves battery life because it’s 45x more energy efficient than a typical hard drive
  • Micron 3D NAND – advancing the world's memory and storage technology for 40 years
  • Crucial 3-year limited warranty

Confirm the installation drive

Move the game from an HDD to an SSD if necessary. An SSD is explicitly required, so this check comes before experimenting with graphics settings.

Disable overlays temporarily

Turn off Steam Overlay and, where enabled, Xbox Game Bar, then relaunch. Overlays can interfere with input, presentation, or startup on some configurations. Re-enable them one at a time after the game is stable if you need their features.

Select the discrete GPU on a multi-GPU laptop

A laptop with integrated and discrete graphics can launch a game on the lower-power GPU. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add the game’s executable if it is not listed, choose Options, and select High performance. Vendor control-panel labels differ, so check the laptop maker’s instructions as well. Connect the AC adapter during testing and use the manufacturer’s performance mode only if temperatures remain safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recheck drivers and Windows

Install a current graphics driver that supports your GPU and Windows build, restart, and test again. If a problem began immediately after a driver update, use the driver’s rollback option or install the previous stable package from the manufacturer’s official support channel.

Watch temperatures and power behavior

Crashes, sudden clock-speed drops, or severe stutter can result from overheating or power limits rather than an unmet requirement. Monitor CPU and GPU temperatures while reproducing the problem, clean blocked vents, and verify that fans spin. Do not disable thermal protections or raise power limits blindly.

How to decide whether your current PC is worth upgrading

Your situation Most sensible next action What the requirements can and cannot answer
HDD installation, otherwise compliant hardware Install on an SSD with at least 125 GB free. The SSD requirement is clear; no interface or capacity beyond free space is prescribed.
Less than 16 GB RAM Increase memory to 16 GB using compatible modules. 16 GB is the published amount for both tiers; more is not stated as necessary.
GPU below RX 5700 or GTX 1070 Ti class Assess a graphics-card upgrade, power supply, case clearance, and cooling together. The table identifies the floor but does not predict FPS for an unlisted card.
CPU below Ryzen 5 2600X or Core i7-6800K class Check the motherboard’s supported-CPU list before considering a platform upgrade. Requirements alone cannot confirm socket, BIOS, or cooler compatibility.
Meets minimum but wants higher settings Prioritize the GPU, then tune resolution and quality options while monitoring frame pacing. There is no official preset or frame-rate target attached to “recommended.”
Laptop with acceptable specifications but poor performance Verify SSD installation, select the high-performance GPU, connect power, and check thermals. The list does not account for laptop power limits, cooling, or upgradeability.

Common upgrade mistakes to avoid

  • Buying by product family. A “GTX,” “RTX,” “RX,” “Core,” or “Ryzen” label is not enough; compare the full model.
  • Assuming recommended means 60 fps. Bethesda publishes no frame-rate, resolution, or preset target.
  • Installing on the largest available drive without checking its type. Capacity does not prove that a drive is solid-state.
  • Ordering a desktop part for a laptop. Laptop CPUs and GPUs are often soldered or use proprietary modules.
  • Ignoring the power supply. A graphics card can fit physically and still fail if the PSU lacks wattage or connectors.
  • Filling an SSD to its last gigabyte. The game needs 125 GB available, and updates require additional working room.
  • Changing several variables at once. Replace or adjust one component or setting, then test so the cause of an improvement or failure is clear.

What is still unknown from the published specifications

The official lists are useful for a compatibility screen, not a complete performance forecast. They do not state expected FPS, target resolution, graphics preset, ray-tracing mode, benchmark scene, or the hardware used to measure a result. They also do not require a particular SSD interface, sequential speed, or total drive capacity beyond 125 GB of available space. Consequently, an exact prediction for your PC requires testing the specific configuration and settings; the table by itself cannot supply that number.

Publisher requirements can change as game updates and supported operating systems change. Check Bethesda’s current system-requirements and performance-support pages immediately before a major purchase or reinstall, especially if your Windows build or hardware is close to the listed boundary.
