The right version depends less on a blanket claim that one platform is “better” and more on the equipment and workflow you already have. A PC can be upgraded and configured, but it must meet a relatively demanding baseline. Xbox Series X|S removes component-by-component compatibility decisions and exposes a smaller set of display controls. Both versions have Bethesda’s in-game Creations system.

What are the PC requirements for Starfield?
Bethesda’s launch specification, published August 24, 2023, requires an SSD and 125 GB of available storage for both tiers. These are published compatibility baselines, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate, resolution or quality level on every machine. How to check whether your PC qualifies
- Open Windows’ system information and record your processor model, installed RAM and Windows version.
- Check your graphics card model in Windows’ display or device information.
- Compare each model with the minimum and recommended rows above, rather than comparing only the amount of RAM.
- Confirm that the destination drive is an SSD and has at least 125 GB free before installation.
- Update Windows and graphics drivers, then recheck the game’s current store requirements. Bethesda’s 2023 list is the published baseline and does not account for every later driver, patch or hardware combination.
If your PC falls below the minimum CPU or GPU, the requirements page gives no supported performance expectation for that configuration. An SSD is not an optional quality upgrade in the published specification: it is listed as required. If the computer has enough total storage but no compatible SSD space, adding a compatible internal SSD addresses the storage requirement; it does not, by itself, promise a particular frame rate.

How Xbox Series X|S performance settings work
Bethesda’s current support documentation covers Xbox Series X|S display settings. The central choice is whether to prioritize Visuals or Performance. Bethesda introduced the newer display choices in its May 15, 2024 update, explicitly describing them under an Xbox Series X section. A later November update said the uncapped option had been reintroduced for Series X users. The current support page uses Series X|S in its heading, so historical announcements should not be read as proof that every option launched simultaneously on both consoles.
“We’ve heard from many that you’d like to have more control over the graphic fidelity and performance on Xbox, similar to how PC players can customize their experience.”
That statement is attributed to Bethesda Game Studios in the May 2024 update. The current selection rules are summarized in Bethesda’s Xbox Series X|S display-settings support page.

Visuals priority
Visuals prioritizes the highest available resolution and keeps full detail for effects, lighting and crowds. Bethesda also says that internal resolution may still adjust dynamically in heavier scenes. Therefore, selecting Visuals does not mean every scene will hold one fixed resolution.
Performance priority
Performance lowers internal resolution and reduces the detail used for effects, lighting and crowds in order to pursue the selected frame-rate target. Bethesda recommends Performance priority when targeting 60 or more frames per second. A target is a preference for the engine to pursue, not a guarantee that every scene will remain locked to that number.
VSync
VSync can be enabled or disabled. Enabling it synchronizes frame delivery with the display and can limit frames; disabling it can allow more immediate frame output but may expose tearing. The useful choice depends on whether your screen supports VRR and how sensitive you are to tearing.

Choosing an Xbox target
- Check your television or monitor’s specifications for 120 Hz and VRR support.
- In Starfield’s display settings, select Visuals or Performance according to whether image detail or a higher target matters more to you.
- Choose only from the targets your setup exposes. A 40-frame target, for example, is not presented as universally available without a 120 Hz VRR display.
- If you use a non-VRR display and select 60, watch for tearing and enable VSync if synchronization is more important than uncapped output.
- Revisit the setting after a major game update or a display change; Bethesda’s support page and update notes are the authoritative references for the available choices.
Bethesda does not provide, in the cited material, a same-scene PC-versus-Series-X-versus-Series-S benchmark. Avoid treating the presence of a 60 or uncapped option as proof of a permanently locked frame rate, and avoid assuming that Series X and Series S deliver identical resolution or detail.
Does Starfield have mods on Xbox?
Yes. Bethesda calls its built-in mod platform Creations, and its June 2024 update confirms that official Creations are available through the in-game menu on Xbox Series X|S and PC. The same update says the Creation Kit is available as a separate free download on Steam. Bethesda also describes community creators uploading content to the Creations platform; Verified Creators may charge for creations and earn royalties.
The existence of Creations on both platforms does not establish full catalog parity. The cited Bethesda material does not prove that every third-party PC mod, external distribution method or PC tool can run on Xbox. For a mod-focused purchase, start with the exact creation you want and verify its platform compatibility rather than assuming that a PC release automatically has an Xbox equivalent.
A safer Creations workflow
- Open Starfield’s Creations entry and identify the specific content, creator and platform listing.
- Read the creation’s requirements and compatibility notes before downloading it.
- Check whether Bethesda or the creator marks it as achievement-friendly.
- Install one substantial creation at a time so that a problem can be associated with a known change.
- Keep a clean save before adding content and follow the creator’s removal instructions if the creation causes a conflict.
Bethesda’s November update says Verified Creators’ Creations may be achievement-friendly and tells players to check the in-game Creations menu or the official site for each creation’s status. It also states that achievements do not retroactively unlock on prior saves with Creations installed. Achievement status is therefore a check to make before installing, not something to assume after the fact. The November details are in Bethesda’s November update.
PC mod workflow
On PC, you can use the official Creations system and separately download the Creation Kit through Steam for supported authoring work. Bethesda also acknowledges PC community modding beyond the in-game system. Those routes can involve different installation methods, dependencies and support expectations, so “PC has mods” should not be interpreted as one unified catalog or one-click process.

These contents come from Bethesda’s edition details page. If you are using Game Pass, compare the cost of an expansion or upgrade with the value of the subscription access you already have instead of paying twice for the base game.
Which version should you choose?
Choose PC when these conditions fit
- Your computer meets at least Bethesda’s published CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows, DirectX and SSD requirements.
- You want to choose or upgrade components rather than accept fixed console hardware.
- You intend to use the Steam Creation Kit or PC-specific community mod workflows.
- You are comfortable checking drivers, free SSD capacity and changing graphics settings when needed.
Meeting the recommended row makes the PC a more defensible choice than merely owning a machine described as a “gaming PC,” but the published list still does not guarantee a particular result. Hardware generation, drivers, game updates and in-game settings all affect what you see.
Choose Xbox Series X|S when these conditions fit
- You want a fixed configuration without comparing desktop components.
- Your television or monitor supports the display mode you care about, especially 120 Hz and VRR if you want the full target menu.
- You are satisfied using Creations from the in-game platform rather than relying on every external PC mod.
- Game Pass access to the Standard Edition is valuable under your current regional subscription.
Xbox is not automatically a 60-frame-per-second purchase: Bethesda’s target choices depend on the display, and the Performance setting can dynamically adjust internal resolution. It is the simpler hardware decision, not a universal performance promise.
For mod-focused players
Both platforms are documented as supporting official Creations. Select PC if your priority is the Steam Creation Kit and the wider range of PC installation and authoring possibilities. Select Xbox if the specific creations you want are available there and you prefer console management. Check each creation’s platform and achievement status before installing; do not infer catalog parity from the shared Creations name.
For budget-focused players
Compare what you already own. A capable PC may make the PC copy the lower-cost route, while a compatible Xbox and an active Game Pass plan may make the Standard Edition route more practical. No universal winner can be calculated without your local hardware, regional prices and subscription terms. The Bethesda edition page should be checked for the current offer.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling a target a guarantee: 30, 40, 60 and uncapped are selectable targets under stated display conditions, not a promise that every scene stays at that output.
- Ignoring the SSD requirement: Bethesda lists an SSD and 125 GB available for both PC tiers.

- Expecting achievements to appear retroactively: Bethesda says achievements do not retroactively unlock on prior saves with Creations installed.
- Buying on an unverified assumption about cross-save or cross-buy: the cited support material does not document those features, so check the current platform and storefront terms.
The practical verdict
PC is the conditional choice for an owner of suitable hardware who values configurability and the Steam Creation Kit workflow. Xbox Series X|S is the conditional choice for someone who wants fixed hardware and has a display that makes Bethesda’s documented Visuals, Performance and frame-rate options useful. For either platform, decide the edition separately, verify the current local offer, and check the exact Creations you intend to use.
