Choose Stardew Valley if you want to grow a farm, improve a home, fish, explore, build relationships and settle into an open-ended routine. Choose Don’t Starve if you want to exploit a dangerous wilderness, manage scarce resources and work out how to survive long enough to escape. For multiplayer, treat Don’t Starve Together as a separate purchase and edition rather than as a mode included with the original game.
That distinction matters more than a simple “relaxing versus difficult” label. The developers describe different premises and play loops; neither official source provides a comparative difficulty rating that applies to every player. This guide compares the games by what you do, how progression is structured, how co-op works, and which platforms and editions you can actually buy.

Stardew Valley and Don’t Starve at a glance
Both games include gathering, crafting, exploration and farming-related activities, but farming serves a different purpose in each. In Stardew Valley, the farm is the long-term project around which your daily life, relationships and upgrades develop. In Don’t Starve, food and materials are immediate survival problems in an unfamiliar world.

What Stardew Valley actually asks you to do
You inherit a farm and decide what it becomes
ConcernedApe describes Stardew Valley as an open-ended country-life RPG in which the player inherits an old farm. The open-ended structure means there is no single required way to organize your days. You can concentrate on crops, animals, orchards and machines, or divide time among fishing, cave exploration, cooking, crafting and town relationships. The official feature list identifies five farm map layouts, so the starting geography can support different building and activity priorities.
#1 Best Overall
- For 1 to 4 players
- Ages 13+
- About 45 minutes per player
- A cooperative board game
- Based on the hit video game
The farm is therefore more than a place to collect ingredients. It is the persistent project that turns each in-game day into a choice about time and energy: tend production, gather materials, visit town, fish, enter the caves or work on your home. The official description establishes those activities, but it does not promise one ideal schedule or a fixed ending. Your preferred routine is part of the game’s appeal.
Progression is social as well as material
Pelican Town residents are part of the progression model. The official factsheet specifically lists relationships with townspeople, in addition to home improvement and farm production. If you enjoy games where the setting becomes more familiar through repeated visits and conversations, this social layer is a decisive difference from a game whose central problem is escaping a hostile wilderness.
Fishing, caves with monsters and treasure, cooking and crafting give you alternatives when crop work is not the goal of the day. The caves add danger and resource hunting, but they sit inside a broader country-life framework rather than replacing it. That combination makes Stardew Valley a strong choice for players who want several low-pressure and higher-risk activities available from the same home base.
What the official co-op description means
On supported platforms, the official factsheet says you can invite one to three other players to work together on a farm, share resources and build relationships. The group is cooperating on the same long-term farm project, not selecting a separate competitive survival mode.
That feature is not universal across every release. ConcernedApe’s factsheet explicitly lists Mobile, PlayStation Vita and Tesla as unavailable for multiplayer. Confirm the platform and edition before buying for a group; a purchase that is suitable for solo play may not provide the co-op feature you expect.

Mobile is a full single-player-style package, with a different control model
The official page describes the mobile version as containing the full single-player content, with touch controls and redesigned menus. That is useful if you want the farm-life experience on a phone or tablet, but it does not override the multiplayer exclusion above. Treat “mobile” as a specific edition with its own control and feature assumptions, not as an identical port with every platform feature.
What Don’t Starve actually asks you to do
Survival is the organizing principle
Klei describes the original as a wilderness survival game in which Wilson is trapped in a mysterious wilderness and must exploit the environment and its inhabitants to escape. Klei’s own description calls it “an uncompromising wilderness survival game full of science and magic.” That sentence is a company-authored description, not a quote from a named individual.
In practical terms, the game’s premise makes observation and resource management central. You enter an unfamiliar environment, identify useful materials, decide what can be safely gathered, and prepare for threats and changing conditions. Crafting and building are tools for staying alive and learning more about the world. Farming can be part of that process, but it is not the peaceful end-state around which every other system revolves.
Expansions change the setting and the problems you solve
Klei’s official game page lists major expansions for the original:
- Reign of Giants adds characters, seasons, creatures, biomes and additional challenges.
- Shipwrecked moves the experience to a tropical archipelago.
- Hamlet centers on a lost Pigmen town in a tropical jungle.
These descriptions indicate substantial changes in environment and challenge set. They are not simply cosmetic farm maps, so check which edition or expansion a store listing includes if a particular setting is the reason you are interested.

- STRATEGY AND COMPETITION: Compete with 2-3 opponents to expand your settlements and cities while managing resources and avoiding the robber.
- TRADE, BUILD, AND SETTLE: Use brick, wood, wheat, ore, and sheep to construct roads, settlements, and cities in your race to 10 victory points.

Why it feels unlike a farm-life RPG
Don’t Starve can include gathering, crafting, building and farming, but those actions serve the survival premise. You are not primarily improving a country home while getting to know a fixed town. You are trying to understand a threatening world well enough to continue in it. The official sources establish that premise; they do not provide a universal numerical difficulty scale, a guaranteed number of deaths or a claim that every player will find it harder than Stardew Valley.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Don’t Starve Together is a separate multiplayer choice
Don’t Starve Together should be evaluated as its own product. Klei calls it the standalone multiplayer expansion to Don’t Starve and lists fighting, farming, building, exploration, gathering, crafting and cooperation as its focus. Klei support explicitly says you do not need to own the original Don’t Starve to play Together: the ownership FAQ was updated July 15, 2026.
That means a group deciding between the games has three distinct options: solo Don’t Starve, solo or group Stardew Valley on a supported platform, or Don’t Starve Together purchased as the multiplayer product. Do not assume that buying the original unlocks Together, or that buying Together requires the original.
The Together experience keeps the wilderness-survival identity while adding coordination. Players can divide gathering and construction jobs, share the consequences of mistakes and plan around threats. The official description supports those activities, but it does not promise that co-op removes the survival pressure or makes the game automatically easier.
How the daily play loops differ
| Play-loop question | Stardew Valley | Don’t Starve |
|---|---|---|
| What is your home base? | An inherited farm that you improve and organize. | A temporary or evolving foothold in a wilderness you are trying to understand. |
| What are you usually preparing for? | The next farm task, town visit, cave trip, fishing session or upgrade. | Immediate survival, resource shortages, environmental changes and hostile encounters. |
| What does farming represent? | One of the main long-term activities, alongside animals, orchards and machines. | A resource-management activity within a wider survival system. |
| How does exploration fit? | Caves offer monsters and treasure, while fishing and town activities provide other routes for progress. | Exploration is how you learn the environment and find what is needed to survive or escape. |
| What makes the world feel familiar? | Repeated routines, relationships with Pelican Town residents and gradual home and farm development. | Knowledge of the wilderness, its inhabitants, biomes and changing dangers. |
| What kind of group activity is described officially? | One to three invited players sharing a farm, resources and relationships. | Cooperative fighting, farming, building, exploration, gathering and crafting in Together. |
Which game should you choose for your temperament?
Choose Stardew Valley when the destination matters more than the emergency
Pick Stardew Valley if your mental picture is a productive garden, a home you can improve, familiar residents, fishing trips and an evening spent deciding what to do tomorrow. It accommodates players who want to alternate between routine and optional risk. The caves contain monsters and treasure, but you can also spend your time on production, cooking, crafting, relationships or layout decisions.

It is also the clearer choice for a shared-farm fantasy. If your group wants to build one place together, compare the exact platform first, then use the co-op support described in the official factsheet.
Choose Don’t Starve when uncertainty is the attraction
Pick Don’t Starve if you want the environment itself to be the puzzle. The appeal is discovering what can be harvested, what threatens you, how to prepare and how the current setting changes your plan. The original game’s Wilson-and-wilderness premise is a better match for players who want survival decisions to dominate their attention.
Choose an expansion when its setting is part of the appeal: Reign of Giants for added seasons, creatures, biomes and challenges; Shipwrecked for a tropical archipelago; or Hamlet for a tropical jungle and Pigmen town. Check the store description for the exact bundle and included content.
Choose Don’t Starve Together for a survival group, not a farm group
If your friends want to cooperate against a wilderness rather than simply share a farm, Together is the relevant product. It supports the group activities Klei lists, and the original game is not required. Coordinate the platform, edition and mobile support before everyone buys.

Platform labels are not interchangeable. The following lists come from the developers’ pages and support articles, but store availability, bundles and features can change. Use them as a verification checklist rather than a promise that every listed release is currently sold in every region.

Prices and sales figures: what is actually established
ConcernedApe’s official Stardew Valley press page displays regular prices of USD $14.99, EUR €13,99, CAD $16.99 and GBP £10.99. Those are the values shown on that page, not a guarantee of the current price in a store, region or sale. Check the platform storefront at checkout for taxes, discounts and edition differences.
The same page reports more than 41 million copies sold across all platforms, more than 26 million on PC and 7.9 million on Nintendo Switch, attributed to ConcernedApe and dated December 2024. Those are historical figures, not a current 2026 total. No comparable official Don’t Starve sales statistic was established here, so a head-to-head sales ranking would be misleading.

- Define the fantasy. If you picture a farm, home and town routine, start with Stardew Valley. If you picture a camp in an unknown and dangerous ecosystem, start with Don’t Starve.
- Decide whether the group is essential. For a shared farm, verify Stardew Valley co-op support on your platform. For wilderness co-op, buy Don’t Starve Together as its own product.
- Check the exact device. Compare the edition in your platform store with the official platform lists. Mobile, Vita, console and PC versions do not automatically share every feature.
- Check the content bundle. For Don’t Starve, identify whether Reign of Giants, Shipwrecked or Hamlet is included or sold separately. For Stardew Valley, confirm that the mobile listing suits your single-player needs.
- Use price as a final filter, not the deciding premise. The displayed Stardew Valley prices and historical sales figures do not establish a current price comparison with Don’t Starve.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
- Mistaking farming for the main genre. Don’t Starve includes farming-related activity, but its official premise is wilderness survival. Buy it for resource pressure and discovery, not for a Stardew-style town routine.
- Assuming the original Don’t Starve includes multiplayer. Together is described as a standalone multiplayer expansion, and owning the original is not required.
- Assuming every Stardew Valley platform has co-op. Mobile, PS Vita and Tesla are explicitly excluded from multiplayer in the official factsheet.
- Treating “mobile” as one universal edition. Read the store listing for controls, menus and multiplayer before purchasing for a group.
- Using sales as a quality contest. Stardew Valley has a dated official sales figure; no comparable official Don’t Starve figure is established, so sales cannot settle the choice.
- Expecting an objective difficulty verdict. The official descriptions establish different kinds of play, not a universal ranking of difficulty for all players.
Optional physical products are not required
The video games need no special accessory or hardware beyond a compatible device. ConcernedApe’s FAQ recognizes Stardew Valley: The Board Game as legitimate and identifies an official cookbook and merchandise partners; these are separate fan products, not required game content. See the official FAQ if you want to verify those products.
Klei’s official game pages also reference a Don’t Starve board game and branded merchandise, including figures, plush replicas, stickers, a blanket and pins. Inventory and partner status can change, so treat them as optional collectibles rather than part of the video-game purchase decision.
Final recommendation
For most readers asking about a “survival-farming” game, the deciding question is whether farming is the destination or a survival tool. Choose Stardew Valley when you want a farm-life RPG built around production, relationships, home improvement, fishing and optional danger. Choose Don’t Starve when you want the wilderness, resource management and escape premise to control every decision. If friends are joining a wilderness run, choose Don’t Starve Together as the standalone multiplayer product and verify the platform before purchase.
