For low-pressure, self-directed sessions, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the safer casual pick. If you mean a game you can dip into for a variety of goals and visible progression, Stardew Valley may suit you better. Neither is universally easier: their different pacing and activity loops define what “casual” feels like.
What “casual” means changes the answer
Casual play can mean a game that asks little of you in any one session, or one that is easy to return to because there is always another task to choose. Animal Crossing: New Horizons leans toward the first definition; Stardew Valley offers more of the second.

Nintendo describes Animal Crossing: New Horizons as letting players “Live life at your own pace” while gardening, fishing, decorating, collecting bugs and fossils, and getting to know the island’s residents. That makes it a strong choice if you want to choose your own activities without treating each session as a step in a larger progression plan. Nintendo’s gameplay overview lays out those activities.
#1 Best Overall
- Create the farm of your dreams: build your farm from the ground up on 1 of 5 map layouts suited to your play style!
- mmaster your branching skills: raise animals, grow crops, start an orchard and build useful machines!
- become a part of the local community: get to know all 30+ residents of Pelican town!
- customize your farmer: there are hundreds of character customization options to choose from!
- settle down and start a family: share life on the farm with 1 of 12 characters you can date and marry, and even have children with!.explore vast, mysterious caves! Encounter dangerous monsters and valuable treasures!.spend a relaxing afternoon at one of the local fishing spots: the waters are teeming with seasonal varieties of delicious fish. Craft bait, bobbers, and crab pots to help you in your journey toward catching every fish and becoming a local Legend!.
There is one important pacing wrinkle: the game follows real-world time. Nintendo says the time of day and seasons match real life, and what you can find varies with time and season. That supports gentle check-ins, but some creatures or discoveries may require returning at a particular time of day or during a particular season.
Stardew Valley suits casual players who enjoy goals and variety
Stardew Valley is an open-ended country-life RPG, not just a farming and decorating game. Its activities include growing crops, fishing, crafting, building relationships, exploring, and developing skills. The official feature page identifies five skill areas: farming, mining, combat, fishing, and foraging. ConcernedApe’s game overview describes the wider mix.
Rank #2
- You’ve inherited your grandfather’s old farm plot in Stardew Valley. Armed with hand-me-down tools and a few coins, you set out to begin your new life.
- Now with Multiplayer! Invite 1-3 players to join you in the valley! Players can work together to build a thriving farm, share resources, and build relationships with townspeople or each other.
- New Single Player Content! Including the new Winter Market Festival, more collectibles, added character cut-scenes and even hats for your horse!
That variety is useful if you like choosing among different kinds of tasks and seeing your farm and abilities develop. But the cozy presentation should not be mistaken for an entirely gentle or mechanically simple loop: mining includes dangerous cave areas and monsters, and farm development and skills provide ongoing goals. You can favor the calmer activities, but Stardew has more built-in progression and challenge than Animal Crossing’s at-your-own-pace pitch.
