Once you accept your spouse’s offer, a child arrives after 14 in-game days. The wait for that offer is different: it is a chance-based overnight event, so there is no guaranteed number of days from marriage until your spouse asks.
How long does it take to have a child in Stardew Valley?
There are two separate waits: the random time until the offer appears, and the fixed 14-day wait after you accept. For an NPC spouse, the offer can be selected on an eligible night with an approximately 5% chance. That chance does not create a deadline; several eligible nights, or many more, may pass before the event occurs. The Stardew Valley Wiki’s Random Events page and Children page describe these mechanics. They are community-maintained reference pages, not developer release notes.

What must be true before an NPC spouse can ask?
The usual single-player eligibility conditions are:
- You have been married for at least seven days.
- Your relationship with your spouse is at 10 hearts or higher.
- Your farmhouse has its second upgrade, which adds the nursery.
- The crib is present in the nursery.
- You sleep at home so the overnight event can be checked.
Removing the crib prevents new children until you replace it. Meeting all the conditions makes the event eligible; it does not guarantee that the offer will occur that night. If you decline, the event can be checked again on later nights when the conditions are met.

Does adoption take longer than having a biological child?
No different wait is stated for adoption: after accepting, delivery is 14 in-game days later. Same-gender couples adopt, while opposite-gender couples have biological children. During the adoption wait, the spouse mentions that the adoption paperwork has been filed, according to the Children page.
How does having children work in multiplayer?
Co-op uses additional home and consent checks. According to the Multiplayer page, the eligible home must belong to one of the married players, include the nursery upgrade, and have fewer than two children. Both players must sleep in a bed in that eligible home. One player is chosen to make the proposal, and both players must accept. The arrival wait is still 14 in-game days.
How long until a child becomes a toddler?
The first three stages last 56 days altogether after the child arrives: 14 days sleeping as a baby, 14 days standing in the crib, and 28 days crawling around the house. The child then becomes a toddler and does not grow beyond that stage. These 56 days begin after the arrival; they are separate from the 14-day wait following acceptance. Check the eligibility conditions first, then account for randomness:

- Sleep at home to allow the NPC-spouse overnight event to be checked.
- If every condition is met, keep playing: an approximately 5% chance on an eligible night can still mean a long, unpredictable wait.
In multiplayer, also confirm that both players sleep in the eligible home, it has fewer than two children, and both players accept the proposal.
