In an August 30, 2026 update, Eric Barone (ConcernedApe) said he was still making progress and would not rush the game. He gave no release window. The official FAQ describes a single-player “town game” centered on running a chocolate shop, with a stronger action-RPG focus than Stardew Valley.
What did Eric Barone actually confirm?
Barone’s August 30, 2026 official update was reassuring but deliberately noncommittal. He wrote, “Im still here, still making progress,” and said he had been productive on Haunted Chocolatier. He also stated, “I won’t compromise on the quality of the game by rushing it or releasing it too early.” That confirms ongoing development, not a launch date, release year or imminent announcement.

The project remains separate from Stardew Valley. Barone has rejected the idea that Stardew Valley updates are being used as a test bed for Haunted Chocolatier. Development work on one game should not be read as a schedule signal for the other.

How big will Haunted Chocolatier be compared with Stardew Valley?
Barone’s clearest size claim came through a GameSpot report on his Game Informer interview. He said, “It’s way bigger than Stardew Valley, at least in terms of the amount of maps, the amount of monsters, the depth to the whole item system, and all the equipment slots and all the stuff like this. Everything is cranked up.”
#1 Best Overall
- For 1 to 4 players
- Ages 13+
- About 45 minutes per player
- A cooperative board game
- Based on the hit video game
That is a qualitative comparison across named systems, not a published measurement. No map count, monster count, item total, equipment-slot total or expected playtime has been announced. “Bigger” therefore should not be translated into a guaranteed number of hours or a larger download. It means Barone is aiming for greater breadth and complexity in those categories.
| Comparison area | What Barone’s comments establish | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Maps | Haunted Chocolatier is intended to have more maps than Stardew Valley. | No map count or final world size. |
| Monsters | The game is planned with a larger monster roster. | No enemy count, variants or final bestiary. |
| Items | The item system is intended to be deeper. | No catalog, crafting total or progression chart. |
| Equipment | There will be more equipment slots and related gear systems. | No slot layout, inventory rules or balance details. |
| Playtime | Not addressed by the size quote. | No campaign length or completion estimate. |
What is the gameplay like?
The official FAQ calls Haunted Chocolatier another “town game,” but the town has a different way of living. Instead of Stardew Valley’s farm as the central enterprise, the player’s main endeavor is a chocolate shop. Barone summarizes the genre shift directly: “Haunted Chocolatier is more of an action-RPG compared to Stardew Valley.”

Chocolate shop and town life
The shop is the defining economic and social setting revealed so far. The FAQ does not provide a complete production chain, staffing system, customer schedule or shop-management interface, so those details should not be treated as confirmed features. What is established is the contrast: chocolate-making and running the shop replace farming as the core daily framework, while the game remains connected to the idea of living in and engaging with a town.

October 2026 coverage of Barone’s GQ interview describes a stronger adventure loop: exploring, finding equipment, becoming more powerful, and fighting monsters and bosses. Barone was reportedly thinking of Stardew players who regularly go into the mines. In the reported quotation, he said, “There are monsters, there are boss fights.”

This points to combat and character progression being central activities rather than optional diversions. It does not yet establish a class system, co-op combat, difficulty modes, skill trees or a specific control scheme.
Atmosphere
The setting is darker and somewhat creepy, with ghosts and a haunted environment that includes a castle. Barone has said he is not aiming for full horror. Expect an eerie action-adventure tone rather than a horror game defined by sustained fear or survival mechanics.

Haunted Chocolatier vs. Stardew Valley
| Feature | Stardew Valley | Haunted Chocolatier |
|---|---|---|
| Core activity | Farming, community life and related rural activities. | Running a chocolate shop in a new town. |
| Genre emphasis | Farming and social simulation with exploration and combat. | More action-RPG oriented, according to Barone’s FAQ. |
| Combat | Present, including mine exploration. | A stronger focus on monsters, equipment progression and boss fights has been reported. |
| Scope claim | Released game used as the comparison point. | Barone says it is “way bigger” in maps, monsters, item depth and equipment slots; no counts are available. |
| Atmosphere | Generally pastoral, with darker areas among its varied settings. | Darker and creepier, featuring ghosts and a castle, but not intended as full horror. |
Because Haunted Chocolatier is unfinished, this is a comparison of stated design direction, not a review. Features, balance and even the relative feel of the two games can change before launch.
When will Haunted Chocolatier come out?
There is no official release date or release window. The August 2026 progress update specifically emphasized quality over speed, and the FAQ does not add a target year. Any date circulating without a new statement from Barone should be treated as speculation.

Which platforms will support it?
Barone’s FAQ says PC is the only platform he is certain about. He intends to bring Haunted Chocolatier to other major platforms, but no complete platform list, console release timing or edition breakdown has been confirmed. The FAQ currently describes the game as single-player, with no current multiplayer plans.
What can Stardew Valley players do while waiting?
Stardew Valley remains the available game for players who want Barone’s established farming-and-town experience now. Nintendo Life lists Nintendo Switch editions, although marketplace availability and edition details can change. That is not a Haunted Chocolatier listing or a substitute for a release announcement.
