For most new players, start with StarCraft II. Blizzard labels it free to play, including the Wings of Liberty campaign and multiplayer access, so you can try the series without first buying a game. There are important limits: ranked play unlocks permanently after ten First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus AI, and most co-op commanders are capped at level five in Blizzard’s free-to-play explanation.
Choose StarCraft: Remastered instead if your priority is the original StarCraft and Brood War campaigns, or if you want to begin with the story that launched the series. Its official page describes upgraded visuals, audio and supported resolutions, with a Buy Now option. The best choice depends less on which game is “easier” and more on whether you want the original campaign or the lower-friction free entry point.

The short answer
| What matters to you | Better first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want to try StarCraft without an upfront purchase | StarCraft II | Blizzard labels it free to play and includes Wings of Liberty, multiplayer access and co-op access within the published limits. |
| You want the original story first | StarCraft: Remastered | It contains the original StarCraft and Brood War campaigns with updated presentation. |
| You want ranked multiplayer immediately | Neither is an immediate unrestricted option based on the cited rules | StarCraft II ranked play requires ten First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus AI before permanent access; no equivalent Remastered unlock rule is established here. |
| You want modernized presentation for the original game | StarCraft: Remastered | The official product page highlights upgraded graphics, audio and broader supported resolutions. |
| You want to sample the series before deciding | StarCraft II | The free-to-play structure lets you begin with the first campaign and try multiplayer without first purchasing Remastered. |
This recommendation is about access and starting point, not a claim that StarCraft II is easier to learn. No reliable difficulty, completion-rate or player-count statistic is established for either game in the cited material.

StarCraft: Remastered is the original campaign experience
StarCraft: Remastered is Blizzard’s updated version of the original StarCraft and its Brood War expansion. Its purpose is preservation with a modern presentation: the campaign content is the original story, while the product page describes upgraded graphics, audio and support for broader resolutions.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That makes Remastered the natural choice when “StarCraft” means the first game’s narrative rather than the franchise in general. You start with the original campaign and then continue into Brood War. The setting, characters and campaign order are therefore the foundation of the series, not a later sequel’s opening chapter.
The official page presents a Buy Now action. The material available for this comparison does not establish a current price, regional availability, edition differences or a particular store’s inventory. Check your regional Blizzard storefront before purchasing rather than relying on an old price quoted elsewhere.
StarCraft II begins a later chapter
Blizzard’s StarCraft II free-to-play explanation describes a no-cost entry that includes the entire first single-player campaign, Wings of Liberty, along with multiplayer and co-op access subject to unlock and progression limits.
Recommended Free Tools
Wings of Liberty is the opening campaign of StarCraft II’s saga. It is not the original StarCraft campaign renamed or remastered; it is the sequel’s starting point. Other StarCraft II campaign entitlements and their current prices are not established by the 2017 explanation, so verify them in the current regional store if you want to continue beyond the free campaign.
How the campaigns differ
Starting with the original story
Remastered gives you the clearest chronological beginning. You play the original StarCraft campaign and then Brood War, experiencing the story in the order in which those campaigns were released. This is the right route if you care about seeing the first conflict before moving to the sequel.
The remaster changes presentation rather than replacing that campaign starting point. Upgraded visuals and audio can make the original release more comfortable on current displays, but the reason to choose it remains the original content itself.
Starting with Wings of Liberty
StarCraft II offers Wings of Liberty as the free first campaign described by Blizzard. It is the practical starting point for someone who wants to understand the sequel’s opening without buying Remastered first.

Choosing Wings of Liberty first means beginning with the sequel’s narrative context. If you later decide that you want the full franchise story from its earliest campaign, you can approach Remastered separately; the two products provide different campaign starting points rather than the same story in two visual styles.
Which order should a story-focused player use?
If continuity is your highest priority, play Remastered’s original StarCraft campaign, then Brood War, and only afterward start StarCraft II with Wings of Liberty. If convenience matters more, start with the free Wings of Liberty campaign and return to Remastered if the original setting and campaign structure appeal to you.
Neither order is invalid. The choice is between chronological context and a no-cost way to sample the sequel. Avoid treating the free availability of Wings of Liberty as evidence that it is narratively simpler; the cited material does not measure story complexity.
What “free to play” means in StarCraft II
Blizzard’s 2017 explanation uses unusually broad wording: “In other words, you can now play all of StarCraft II’s multiplayer, every Co-op Commander, and the entire first campaign in the single-player story, for free.” That sentence describes the announced structure, but it should not be read as “every feature is permanently unrestricted from the first minute.”
The free campaign
The free single-player campaign identified in that explanation is Wings of Liberty. It is the part of StarCraft II that makes the game an especially low-commitment first try. The explanation does not establish current prices for later campaigns, so do not assume that the rest of the campaign collection is included.
Multiplayer access and the ranked requirement
StarCraft II’s free offering includes multiplayer, but Blizzard’s explanation says ranked multiplayer unlocks permanently after you earn ten First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus AI. This is an unlock condition, not a research statistic or a prediction of how long a new player will need.
A practical first-session route is therefore:
- Start with Unranked or Versus AI rather than expecting ranked matchmaking to be available immediately.
- Play for the daily First Win objective until you have accumulated ten qualifying wins.
- After the permanent ranked unlock is granted, decide whether competitive matchmaking is what you want from the game.
The explanation is dated 2017. Treat the ten-win rule as the published structure Blizzard described, and check the current in-game account and unlock screens for any later changes.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Co-op commander limits
The same explanation says that most co-op commanders have a level-five cap in the free offering. It also identifies Raynor, Kerrigan and Artanis as remaining completely free. That distinction matters: “every Co-op Commander” refers to access to the co-op roster in the published explanation, while progression depth is limited for most commanders.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf co-op is your main reason for installing StarCraft II, begin with the commanders available to you and see whether the level-five ceiling meets your expectations. Do not assume that every commander has identical free progression; Blizzard’s explanation specifically distinguishes the three completely free commanders from the general level-five limit.
Multiplayer and online considerations
StarCraft II
Blizzard Support’s surfaced StarCraft II System Requirements page states that an active internet connection is required for both single-player and multiplayer modes. The support page also warns that requirements can change over time, and its full contents were not available in the supplied material.
That requirement affects the choice even if you intend to play only the campaign: do not plan on StarCraft II as an offline single-player installation without checking the current support guidance first. Before installing, open Blizzard’s current requirements page and confirm the operating system, hardware and connectivity details for your machine.
StarCraft: Remastered
The official Remastered page describes online head-to-head or team play after the campaign. This confirms an online multiplayer component, but the supplied material does not establish a complete current system-requirements list or an offline-mode policy for every feature. Check Blizzard’s current product and support information for your region and operating system.

For a new StarCraft II player, the ranked unlock rule creates a useful separation between practice and competition. Unranked and Versus AI are not presented here as an easier version of the game; they are the modes Blizzard names for earning the ten First Wins of the Day. Use them to learn the interface and basic match flow without treating the unlock requirement as a promise about skill progression.
Presentation, compatibility and ownership
Why Remastered can be the better visual choice
Remastered’s defining upgrade is presentation. Blizzard highlights improved graphics, audio and support for broader resolutions while retaining the original StarCraft and Brood War campaigns. If the original game’s release-era display assumptions are your concern, this is the version designed to make that content fit more naturally on modern screens.

“Remastered” does not mean “StarCraft II technology.” The products are separate games with separate campaign starting points. Choose Remastered for the updated version of the original, not because it provides Wings of Liberty.
Why current checks matter
Store pricing, regional entitlements, operating-system support and hardware requirements can change. The cited StarCraft II requirements page explicitly says its requirements may change, while the 2017 free-to-play article is an announcement from that year rather than a current price list.

Choose StarCraft II first if…
You want the lowest-risk trial
StarCraft II is the rational first download when your main question is whether you enjoy StarCraft at all. Blizzard labels it free to play, and the cited offering includes Wings of Liberty plus multiplayer and co-op access within the stated limits. You can test the series before deciding whether the original campaigns justify a Remastered purchase.
You are curious about multiplayer or co-op
The free offering gives you a direct way to sample both formats. Plan around the ranked unlock: ten First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus AI are required for permanent ranked access under Blizzard’s explanation. For co-op, remember the level-five ceiling for most commanders and the separate status of Raynor, Kerrigan and Artanis.
You want a sequel-era starting point
Wings of Liberty is the appropriate first campaign when you want StarCraft II’s opening rather than the original game’s campaign order. It is a complete first campaign in the free-to-play explanation, while later campaign entitlements should be checked separately.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose StarCraft: Remastered first if…
You want the beginning of the story
Remastered is the better fit for a reader who wants to start where the franchise started: original StarCraft followed by Brood War. The campaign content, not the purchase mechanism, is the deciding factor.
You specifically want the original game with modern presentation
The upgraded graphics, audio and supported resolutions address the main practical reason to prefer a remaster over an untouched original release. You are still choosing the original game’s campaign experience, just with the presentation improvements Blizzard advertises.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
You already know the original is your priority
If you are not looking for a free trial and are specifically seeking the original campaigns, going straight to Remastered avoids using StarCraft II as a substitute for a game you already know you want. Confirm the current Buy Now price and regional availability before checkout.
A practical first-play plan
Plan A: sample the series with StarCraft II
- Review the current StarCraft II system requirements, including the active internet requirement for single-player and multiplayer.
- Install the free StarCraft II offering through the current Blizzard channel for your region.
- Begin with Wings of Liberty if you want the included campaign, or try Unranked or Versus AI if multiplayer is your immediate interest.
- For ranked access, track the ten First Wins of the Day described in Blizzard’s free-to-play explanation.
- For co-op, test the available commanders and account for the level-five cap that Blizzard described for most commanders.
- Only after this trial decide whether you need additional StarCraft II campaigns or the original StarCraft experience in Remastered.
Plan B: follow the original campaign order
- Open the official StarCraft: Remastered page and confirm the current purchase details for your region.
- Start with the original StarCraft campaign.
- Continue into Brood War after completing the original campaign path.
- Use the remastered graphics, audio and resolution support as presentation upgrades, while remembering that the campaign starting point remains the original game.
- Move to StarCraft II afterward if you want the sequel’s Wings of Liberty opening and its separate multiplayer and co-op systems.
Common decision mistakes
Assuming “free” means every StarCraft II feature is unrestricted
The free-to-play explanation includes important boundaries. Ranked play has the ten-win unlock, and most co-op commanders have a level-five cap. Treat the offer as a substantial trial and entry package, not as proof that every later campaign or progression tier is included.
Buying Remastered because you want Wings of Liberty
Remastered contains the original StarCraft and Brood War campaigns. Wings of Liberty belongs to StarCraft II. Check the campaign name before purchasing so the product matches the story you want.
Using an old price or requirement as a current guarantee
The free-to-play article is from 2017, and the support page warns that system requirements can change. Current regional storefront details and compatibility should be verified immediately before installation or purchase.
Calling one game objectively easier
The available official material does not provide a controlled difficulty comparison, learning-time study or player-success statistic. Pick based on access, campaign order, presentation and multiplayer goals rather than an unsupported claim that one game is universally easier.
Final recommendation
Start with StarCraft II if you want the most accessible first test: it is labeled free to play, includes Wings of Liberty, and lets you sample multiplayer and co-op before spending money. Go in knowing that ranked play requires ten First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus AI, most co-op commanders have a level-five cap under Blizzard’s published explanation, and current rules should be checked in-game.
Start with StarCraft: Remastered if “StarCraft” means the original story to you. It is the correct first stop for the original StarCraft and Brood War campaigns, with upgraded graphics, audio and resolution support. Verify the current regional price and compatibility details before buying. If you are undecided, StarCraft II is the sensible first download; if you already know you want the original campaign, Remastered is the direct choice.
