For U.S. Starbucks Rewards members, neither channel automatically earns more Stars. Since March 10, 2026, your Rewards status—Green, Gold, or Reserve—sets the base earning rate. An eligible mobile order and an eligible in-store purchase made after scanning your member barcode use that same status-based rate.
The real choice is convenience and payment. Use the app when you want to order ahead, customize a drink before arriving, or keep payment methods and favorite stores together. Order at the counter when you prefer speaking with a barista or using cash, a physical card, or another tender that is not available in the app. In either case, check that the location supports the earning method you plan to use.

The short answer: rewards are tied to status, not the ordering channel
Starbucks’ current U.S. Rewards rules cover qualifying purchases made through mobile ordering and qualifying purchases made in a participating store when you scan the Starbucks app before payment. The app itself is not a Star multiplier.
Starbucks states in its current Rewards FAQ: “Starting March 10, your status level will determine your earn rate, not your method of payment.” That replaces older advice that reloading a Starbucks Card automatically produced a higher base rate. A Starbucks Card can still be convenient, and reload promotions may award Bonus Stars, but it does not universally double your ordinary earning rate under the post-refresh program.

The rates below are the published U.S. figures in the Starbucks Rewards Terms of Use reviewed October 13, 2026. Starbucks can change rates, offers, qualifying transactions, and redemption rules, so confirm the terms shown in your account before relying on a particular benefit.

These are program rates, not a cash valuation. A Star’s practical value depends on the redemption you choose, applicable caps, taxes or exclusions, and whether an offer is available on your account.
How earning works in the app
Mobile ordering is primarily a workflow advantage. The U.S. app lets you select a participating pickup location, customize menu items, submit the order, and pay with a method the app supports. You can also save favorite stores and payment methods and scan the app to pay for a purchase made in person.

Place an order ahead
- Open the Starbucks app and choose a store. Pickup options and the available menu are tied to the location you select. A store may not offer mobile ordering at every time or for every item.
- Build and customize the order. Select sizes, milk choices, syrups, toppings, and other options that the location makes available. Review the total and any customization charges before submitting.
- Choose an available payment method. The app may let you pay from a Starbucks Card balance, use a linked payment method, or use another supported option. Starbucks’ PayPal information says PayPal can be linked for a direct payment or used to digitally load a Starbucks Card; availability can vary by store or kiosk.
- Submit the order and follow the pickup instructions. Go to the selected location and use the app’s order information to identify the order. Do not assume that submitting an order means it will be ready immediately.
A mobile order earns at your applicable Green, Gold, or Reserve rate when it is a qualifying transaction under the current U.S. terms. The reviewed official materials do not establish a universal time saving compared with counter ordering. Busy periods, staffing, equipment, item complexity, and the store’s own workflow can affect readiness, so “order ahead” should be treated as a convenience feature rather than a guaranteed faster service level.
Use saved payments without confusing them with the earn rate
Saving a payment method can reduce repeated data entry and make app checkout predictable. It does not change the status rate. A direct payment through the app and a payment from a Starbucks Card are both subject to the current qualifying-purchase rules and exclusions.
PayPal support is documented by Starbucks for direct payment in the app or for loading a Starbucks Card. Some stores or kiosks may be unable to extend particular benefits, so a payment method that appears in the app should not be treated as proof that every location supports every Rewards feature.
How to earn Stars when ordering at the counter
In-store ordering can earn the same base rate, but the timing of the scan matters. The reliable sequence is to identify yourself as a Rewards member before the payment is completed.

- Open the Starbucks app before reaching the register. Sign in and bring up your member barcode.
- Ask the barista to scan the barcode before you pay. This connects the purchase to your Rewards account. Scanning after payment may not attach the transaction, and the current terms do not promise that every missed scan can be corrected.
- Pay with a supported tender. Starbucks lists cash, credit, debit, and mobile wallet payments as possible options when the participating store supports them. A Starbucks Card is another option, but it is not required for the status-based rate at stores that accept the broader scan-and-pay process.
- Check the receipt or account activity. If the transaction does not appear as expected, keep the receipt and contact Starbucks through the support route shown in the app or current terms.
Some stores have narrower capabilities. Starbucks says certain locations may award Stars only on Starbucks Card transactions. A kiosk, licensed location, or other participating venue can therefore behave differently from a company-operated café. If earning Stars is important for a particular purchase, ask whether the store can scan the member barcode and which payment methods qualify before placing the order.
App versus counter: practical differences

What changed in the 2026 U.S. Rewards program?
Status thresholds
The 2026 Starbucks Rewards FAQ says members need 500 Stars to achieve Gold status and 2,500 Stars after Gold to achieve Reserve status. Those thresholds describe status progression; they are not a promise that a particular spending amount will produce a fixed cash discount, because earning depends on qualifying purchases, level rates, and any applicable offers.
Reload bonuses
The same FAQ lists 10 Bonus Stars for a digital reload of $30 and 25 Bonus Stars for a digital reload of $50. These are published program offers and may be subject to eligibility, timing, account presentation, and other terms. Reloading solely to chase a higher ordinary rate is outdated under the current status-based system.
Star expiration
Green Stars expire six months after the calendar month in which they were earned. Starbucks describes a way to extend them by taking an eligible action during the month before expiration. Gold and Reserve Stars do not expire while the member maintains that status. Because expiration and extension rules are program-sensitive, check the expiration information displayed in your account rather than relying on an old calendar.

The 2026 FAQ adds a 60-Star redemption for $2 off an item, excluding gift cards. It also describes maximum redemption values by tier. The dollar amount is a program rule, not a guaranteed value for every item or store: exclusions, caps, taxes, availability, and account-specific offers still apply.
When the app is the better choice
You want to configure the order before arriving
The app is useful when you already know the store, drink, and modifications you want. Entering the choices yourself can make a complicated order easier to review and repeat. It is especially practical when you visit the same locations and want favorite stores and payment methods in one place.
You prefer digital payment or PayPal
If you want to pay from a linked digital method, use PayPal as documented by Starbucks, or manage a Starbucks Card balance without handing over a physical tender, the app keeps those options together. Verify that the selected location supports the payment and any associated Rewards benefit.

You are ordering for several people
Building multiple customized items on one screen can help you check sizes and modifications before submitting. The app does not guarantee faster production, so place the order with enough time for the selected store to prepare it.

When ordering in store is the better choice
You need to ask questions or change the order verbally
Counter ordering gives you a direct conversation with the barista. That can be preferable when an ingredient question, substitution, allergy concern, or unusual request is easier to explain than to encode in the app.
You want to use cash or a physical card
The in-store route can support cash, credit, debit, or a mobile wallet when the store accepts them. Keep the app open and scan the member barcode before payment so the purchase can earn at your status rate where supported.
The location does not offer mobile ordering
A store may be available for walk-in service but absent from the app’s pickup choices, or it may temporarily disable mobile orders. Ordering at the counter is then the only practical channel. Ask whether the location can scan your member barcode and which tender qualifies.

Rewards eligibility is not identical at every checkout. Starbucks’ terms warn that some stores may only award Stars for Starbucks Card transactions. Certain guest-checkout, delivery, beta, or other excluded transactions may also be ineligible. A delivery order or a purchase made through a path that does not identify your Rewards account should not be assumed to earn Stars merely because the item is sold by Starbucks.
Licensed stores, kiosks, and other nonstandard formats can have different payment equipment or benefit limitations. Starbucks’ PayPal information likewise notes that some stores or kiosks may be unable to extend particular benefits. Before a high-value purchase, confirm the store’s process rather than relying on what another location accepts.
Reusable cups: an optional bonus, not an app requirement
Starbucks’ terms say a participating store may offer double Stars on a qualifying transaction when a member brings a clean reusable cup and uses it instead of a paper to-go cup. The benefit can be changed or suspended, and participation is not universal. It is unrelated to whether you order through the app or at the register.

If you use a reusable cup, present it according to the store’s instructions and verify that the transaction qualifies before paying. Do not assume that every cup, drink format, kiosk, or location receives the bonus.
A decision rule you can use on your next visit
- Choose the app when order-ahead, saved payment, favorite stores, or detailed customization matters more than speaking at the register.
- Choose the counter when you want to use cash or a physical tender, ask questions, make a last-minute change, or visit a location without mobile ordering.
- For Rewards, focus on the status and the scan. Your Green, Gold, or Reserve level determines the base rate. In store, scan before paying; in the app, submit a qualifying mobile order through the signed-in account.
- Check exceptions when using a kiosk, licensed store, delivery path, guest checkout, or a payment method that the location may not support.
Troubleshooting missing Stars or payment problems
The barcode was not scanned
For a counter purchase, confirm that the member barcode was scanned before payment. Keep the receipt and use the support option in the app or current Starbucks terms if the transaction does not appear. There is no blanket guarantee that a missed scan can be added later.

Payment acceptance and Rewards eligibility are separate questions. A kiosk may take a card or mobile wallet while being unable to extend a particular benefit. Ask the barista which transactions earn Stars before completing the order.
The app does not show your preferred store or item
Mobile ordering is location- and menu-dependent. Select another participating store or order at the counter if the location is open for walk-in service. Do not place a substitute mobile order unless the selected items and pickup location are correct.
The Star total looks different from an older calculation
Recalculate using your current status rate. Advice based on a permanent double rate for Starbucks Card payments belongs to the pre-March 10, 2026 program and may no longer apply. Also check whether the purchase was qualifying, whether an offer had separate terms, and whether Stars were Bonus Stars rather than base Stars.
Bottom line
For U.S. members, ordering in the app is not a rewards shortcut. A qualifying app order and a qualifying in-store purchase can earn at the same status-based rate. Pick the app for advance ordering, customization, and saved digital payments; pick the counter for conversation, cash or physical tender, and locations without mobile ordering. Whichever route you choose, use a signed-in account for app orders, scan your member barcode before paying in store, and check location-specific exceptions before assuming Stars will post.
