Star Wars Zero Company beginner’s guide: turn-based tactics, squad roles, and mission planning

Star Wars Zero Company is easiest to learn when you treat every turn as a deliberate decision rather than a reflex test. Read the mission objective first, select operators who are healthy and available, and use The Den to prepare before deploying. You are not automatically required to defeat every enemy, and the game gives you time to inspect the battlefield before committing an action.

What Star Wars Zero Company is

Star Wars Zero Company is a single-player, story-driven turn-based tactics game set during the twilight of the Clone Wars. Former Republic officer Hawks leads an unconventional group of operatives against the Infinite Coil, a cult aligned with the Separatists. The campaign presents an original story, so EA says you do not need to have played another Star Wars game first.

The game combines tactical missions with a planning layer at The Den. Combat asks you to choose what each operator will do; the campaign layer asks which missions, operations, relationships and upgrades deserve your limited time in the current cycle. Understanding that two-part structure matters more than memorizing a supposedly perfect squad.

Why the turn-based format helps beginners

Combat pauses while you choose an operator action. That choice resolves, and then the opponent takes actions. You can therefore stop, inspect the situation and think before committing instead of relying on real-time reactions. The official beginner guide emphasizes that characters appearing to exchange blaster fire does not by itself inflict damage; an action must be selected and taken during the turn.

  • Command an elite squad through a gritty and authentic Star Wars story set in the twilight of the Clone Wars. Step into the role of Hawks, a former Republic officer leading Zero Company against an emerging threat that could consume the galaxy.

Use the pause to ask three questions: What does the objective actually require? Which operators are in good enough condition to act? Which available action improves the chance of completing that objective? If an attractive attack does not help the mission, it may be better to preserve the turn for movement, support or another task available to the operator.

Your first deployment: a practical turn-by-turn routine

The following routine stays within the systems explained in the official beginner material and avoids assuming action-point totals, weapon statistics or character classes that have not been established.

  1. Read the objective before selecting actions. The objective determines whether eliminating opponents is necessary. If it does not explicitly require a full defeat, do not spend turns clearing the map simply because enemies remain.
  2. Check the squad you actually brought. Confirm which operators are available and review their current condition before the mission starts. A theoretically useful operator who is unavailable or badly hurt cannot contribute to this deployment.
  3. Pause and inspect the battlefield. Because the game waits for your decision, identify the immediate threat, the route toward the objective and any operator whose ability could support the plan. Do not treat the first visible target as an automatic priority.
  4. Choose one operator action at a time. The result resolves before the opponent acts. Watch what changed, then reassess rather than executing a memorized sequence.
  5. Re-check the objective after major changes. If an opponent falls, an operator is hurt or the situation changes, compare your next action with the stated mission requirement again.
  6. Stop when the objective is complete. A mission that does not require every enemy to be defeated is not improved by taking unnecessary risks after success is within reach.
  7. Restart when the plan teaches you something. If a mission goes badly, open the game menu and use the restart-mission option to try a different approach with the same operators.

What an exchange of fire means

Visual firefights can make a beginner think that damage is happening automatically. In Zero Company, the meaningful event is the action you select during your turn. Wait for the resolution, note the new battlefield state and only then decide what comes next. This rhythm is the core difference from a real-time action game.

Objectives come before enemy elimination

The official guide states that defeating every enemy is not required unless the mission objective explicitly says so. Make the objective the first line of your plan and the last check before taking a risk.

How to apply the rule

  • If the objective can be completed without clearing the entire opposition, preserve operators and turns for that requirement.
  • If the objective explicitly requires defeating enemies, elimination becomes part of the plan; still, choose actions deliberately rather than attacking automatically.
  • When the wording is unclear to you, reread the objective in the mission interface before committing another action.
  • Do not confuse a visible enemy with a mandatory target. Presence alone does not define victory.

A safe mental model

Think of enemies as obstacles to the objective, not as the objective itself. This prevents a common beginner failure: winning a series of exchanges while running out of healthy operators or time for the task that actually ends the mission.

Building a squad around mission fit

Zero Company includes authored operatives and custom operatives. EA’s examples of authored characters include a Clone Trooper, a Mandalorian and a Jedi Padawan. You can also create and customize operatives, including their species, appearance and other details. The sources do not establish a single best lineup for every mission, so build around the operators and abilities available to you rather than copying a universal recipe.

Start with abilities, availability and condition

Before deploying, inspect the recruited operators’ available abilities and current condition. Ask which combination gives you useful options for the mission in front of you, then account for whether those operators are actually available. A flexible group with several ways to respond is more valuable than a nominally powerful operator who cannot deploy or is already in poor shape.

The game lets you progress skills at The Den and buy equipment. Treat those choices as preparation for the kinds of missions you expect to accept, not as proof that one permanent build is correct. Mission difficulty can range from Risky through Extreme, so the squad that feels comfortable on an easier assignment may need a different balance of abilities or healthier operators for a harder one.

Use relationships as a tactical resource

Operators can develop bonds. EA says bonds unlock combat synergies and support abilities, and the campaign also includes cross-training benefits. Those effects make relationships relevant to squad planning: consider whether a pair’s bond offers support that fits the mission and whether an operation could strengthen or weaken a relationship you value.

Do not force every mission to use the same bonded pair. Bond benefits are one factor alongside availability, condition, learned skills, equipment and the objective. The useful question is “Which available combination gives me the tools for this assignment?” rather than “Which lineup is universally strongest?”

Why fixed class labels can mislead

The available official material does not define a mandatory tank, healer or scout class system, nor does it provide a best-in-slot equipment list. Avoid importing those labels from other tactical games. Read the abilities shown for your own operators and let the mission objective determine what you need.

The StarWars.com guide mentions Hawks using the PICO-5 electroscope while scouting in the field to obtain Intel. That example explains one way to gather a campaign resource; it does not establish an optimal scout build or require a dedicated scout operator.

The Den: where campaign decisions happen

The Den is the planning phase between deployments. Use it to review missions and operations, check operator health and availability, talk to teammates and complete activities you want before leaving. Missions advance the campaign cycle, and you cannot take every mission and operation offered in that cycle.

Choose missions from the Holotable

Hawks uses the Holotable to choose among tactical missions and operations available for the current cycle. Missions are combat assignments. Critical missions advance the story, while available assignments can carry difficulty labels from Risky through Extreme.

Before selecting a harder assignment, verify that the operators you need are healthy and available. The label is a planning signal, not a reason to ignore the condition of the squad. If an operator is unavailable, the mission may demand a different combination of abilities than the one you originally imagined.

Operations trade Intel for campaign benefits

Operations are non-combat assignments that cost Intel. You can acquire Intel by completing missions and gathering information; the official example is using the PICO-5 electroscope while Hawks scouts in the field. Operations can award items, credits and influence. Some can also strengthen or weaken team bonds.

Because Intel is limited and the cycle offers more activities than you can complete, compare the likely benefit with the opportunity cost. An operation that improves a bond may matter if you plan to deploy those operators together. Another operation may provide items, credits or influence that better supports an upcoming mission. There is no universal priority independent of your current roster and objectives.

Finish desired Den activities before deployment

The official beginner guidance specifically recommends completing the Den activities you want before deploying, because starting a mission advances you to the next cycle. A practical order is to inspect everything first, decide which conversations, skill progression, equipment purchases and operations matter, and only then launch the mission that moves the cycle forward.

Mission Combat assignment selected from the Holotable; some are critical to the story. Does the objective justify the risk and fit the operators who are healthy and available?
Operation Non-combat assignment that costs Intel and may award items, credits, influence or bond effects. Is this benefit more valuable than the other activities you will miss this cycle?

How to choose among competing missions and operations

Since every available activity cannot be completed, make your priorities explicit instead of selecting the first option on the Holotable.

  1. Protect story progress. Note whether a mission is marked critical and whether it is the assignment you want to use to advance the narrative.
  2. Match risk to readiness. Compare the mission’s Risky-to-Extreme label with operator health, availability and the abilities you have developed.
  3. Reserve Intel for outcomes that matter. Review what each operation can award and whether it affects a bond you are trying to develop.
  4. Account for the cycle boundary. Complete conversations, purchases, skill progression and desired operations before launching a mission that advances the cycle.
  5. Accept that some content will wait. Missing an available activity is part of the campaign structure, not evidence that you planned incorrectly.

Difficulty, tutorials, permadeath and recovery

New players are not expected to know every system immediately. Tutorials and on-screen prompts introduce the basics, and difficulty can be changed at any time outside combat.

Select a learning-friendly difficulty

Choose the setting that lets you understand the turn order, objectives and Den cycle without turning every early mistake into frustration. You can adjust the difficulty outside combat as your confidence changes. There is no single setting that is best for every beginner; the useful setting is the one that leaves enough room to learn while keeping decisions meaningful.

Decide whether to enable permadeath

Permadeath is optional. The official guide presents it as a choice for players who want greater emotional stakes, not as a requirement for completing the campaign. Leave it off while learning if you prefer a forgiving campaign, or enable it when the consequences are part of the experience you want.

Restart instead of repeating a bad plan

If a mission begins to unravel, open the game menu and restart the mission. You can then test a different strategy with the same operators instead of treating one failed attempt as permanent proof that your squad cannot succeed. Use the second attempt to change one decision at a time—such as the first action, target priority or deployment choice—so you can identify what actually improved the result.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes

Spending turns on every visible enemy

Symptom: Operators are fighting effectively, but the mission objective remains incomplete or the squad is taking avoidable damage.

Fix: Re-read the objective. Eliminate opponents only when that requirement or the route to the requirement makes it necessary.

Deploying without checking the Den

Symptom: You discover an important conversation, operation or purchase only after the cycle has advanced.

Fix: Review the Holotable, operator condition, conversations, skills, equipment and Intel-spending opportunities before launching the mission.

Assuming one squad works everywhere

Symptom: A familiar lineup is unavailable, unhealthy or poorly suited to a mission’s objective.

Fix: Inspect the abilities and condition of the operators you can actually deploy. Include bond synergies when useful, but let mission fit decide.

Treating difficulty labels as decoration

Symptom: You accept an Extreme assignment with operators who are not ready.

Fix: Treat Risky through Extreme as a readiness check. Improve skills, buy equipment, develop useful bonds or select a different available assignment when appropriate.

Campaign scope and related extras

EA Help estimates the main campaign at around 30 to 40 hours, with the exact time varying by chosen difficulty and the player’s experience with tactics games. Treat that as an estimate rather than a guaranteed completion time.

EA’s June 5, 2026 announcement describes an ever-changing galaxy map featuring more than 150 planets. That is a campaign-map feature count, not a promise that a beginner must visit every planet or a measure of combat performance.
