Choose Star Wars Outlaws if you want a solo-first, open-world adventure built around stealth, gadgets, traversal and crime-syndicate choices. Choose Gears of War: E-Day if you want a darker, more concentrated cover-shooter campaign that you can play alone, in split-screen, or with up to four online players. Both are third-person shooters, but they promise fundamentally different kinds of play: freedom and exploration in Outlaws versus pressure, positioning and coordinated firefights in E-Day.

There is no universal winner. Outlaws is the better match for a player who treats a shooter as part of a larger exploration game. E-Day is the better match for someone who wants the shooting itself, especially with friends, to be the main event.

What Star Wars Outlaws is
An open-world Star Wars story
Star Wars Outlaws is set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. It introduces Kay Vess, a scoundrel trying to build a life in the galaxy’s criminal underworld, and Nix, her companion. StarWars.com describes it as the first open-world Star Wars game. Ubisoft presents a journey through distinct locations across the galaxy, with crime-syndicate jobs and story expansions built around that wider setting.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe open-world structure changes what you do between firefights. Instead of moving from one combat arena to the next, you can travel through different locations, take optional work, decide how to approach an objective and manage relationships with syndicates. The central story remains important, but the surrounding activities give you reasons to explore rather than simply follow a corridor.

What its design emphasizes
- Exploration across multiple planets and locations rather than one continuous battlefield.
- A relationship system in which jobs for crime syndicates affect how the wider adventure feels.
- Stealth, distractions and gadgets that let you prepare an encounter before firing.
- Blaster combat and traversal tools that connect movement, infiltration and escape.
Outlaws is therefore best understood as a solo adventure with shooting, not as a traditional competitive or co-op shooter. Its appeal comes from choosing your route and method as much as from winning a firefight.
What Gears of War: E-Day is
An origin story for the Locust invasion
Gears of War: E-Day is set fourteen years before the original Gears of War. It follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde erupts, putting the opening hours of Emergence Day at the center of the campaign. Xbox and The Coalition describe it as a third-person cover-shooter.
The premise gives E-Day a focused dramatic frame: soldiers confronting a sudden, catastrophic invasion rather than a scoundrel navigating competing criminal factions. The official material emphasizes horror and brutality, so the atmosphere is built around survival, danger and the shock of a world changing under attack.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Directed, but not entirely corridor-bound
Xbox’s launch guide characterizes the campaign as primarily linear while also noting large open pockets, multiple pathways and side paths that can lead to side missions. That distinction matters. You should expect a directed sequence of events and set pieces, but not a completely narrow hallway shooter. The open areas create room to search, choose a route and find optional content without turning E-Day into an open-world game.
How the combat differs
Outlaws: create an advantage before the shooting starts
Outlaws gives you several ways to begin an encounter. Kay can use stealth, gadgets and Nix’s distractions to separate enemies, bypass a position or create a better opening. Ubisoft’s later update specifically highlights the choice between staying stealthy and reaching for the blaster. That choice is central to the game’s rhythm: preparation can be as important as the exchange of fire that follows.

- Jump into the pilot seat. Pilot your ship, the Trailblazer, as you engage in thrilling dogfights with the Empire and other foes. Find the right opportunities to chase, evade, and attack to get the upper hand.
Enemy weak points reward deliberate targeting rather than indiscriminate shooting. When you identify a vulnerability, you have a reason to pause, line up a shot or use a tool at the right moment. The result is a combat loop that blends infiltration, tactical target selection and movement through the environment.
E-Day: survive by owning the cover system
E-Day is built around the cover-shooter format. The basic question in an encounter is not how to sneak past every enemy, but where to position yourself, when to expose yourself and how to coordinate movement while pressure builds. Cover provides the structure of each firefight, and the horror setting makes enemy contact feel like a threat that must be managed rather than a routine obstacle.
That design favors players who enjoy deliberate pacing between bursts of action: move to a safer position, watch an opening, trade fire, advance and repeat. In co-op, the same system becomes a coordination exercise. One player can hold a position while another moves, and a team of four can divide attention across multiple threats. The official pages do not provide a complete weapon list or a quantified difficulty comparison, so claims about exact arsenals or relative challenge would go beyond the published information.
Which game has better combat?
There is no objective answer because the games reward different skills. Outlaws has the broader range of approaches. Choose it if you want to decide whether an encounter becomes a stealth sequence, a gadget puzzle, a weak-point exercise or a blaster fight. E-Day has the more concentrated shooting identity. Choose it if you want cover, enemy pressure and coordinated firefights to dominate your playtime.
| If you value… | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stealth and distraction | Outlaws | Its tools and Nix’s abilities let you shape an encounter before open combat. |
| Targeting vulnerabilities | Outlaws | Weak points reward strategic shots and timing. |
| Cover-based firefights | E-Day | The campaign is designed around positioning and pressure from the cover system. |
| Coordinated team battles | E-Day | Its campaign supports split-screen and up to four-player online co-op. |
| Combat mixed with traversal and exploration | Outlaws | Travel and open-world activity are part of the core loop, not just transitions between fights. |
Campaign structure: open world versus directed invasion
How Outlaws handles freedom
Outlaws places its heist story inside an open-world journey. Distinct planets and locations provide different spaces to explore, while syndicate relationships influence which jobs and opportunities are available around the central narrative. You can choose when to pursue optional activity, which route to take and how much time to spend away from the main plot.

This structure suits players who like a campaign to unfold at their own pace. You may spend time learning a location, completing work for a faction and improving your position before returning to a major story mission. The trade-off is that the experience is less tightly paced than a linear action game: the next dramatic beat is not always the immediate priority.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How E-Day uses open pockets
E-Day keeps the invasion story on a directed track, but its larger areas and side paths provide breathing room. You may have more than one way through a section or find a side mission away from the main route. Those spaces add exploration and replay value without changing the campaign’s identity as a focused origin story.
That balance is useful if you want some choice but do not want to manage a galaxy of activities. E-Day’s structure keeps the emotional momentum of Emergence Day in view while allowing you to look around and take alternate paths within selected sections.
Which campaign is more replayable?
Outlaws offers more obvious variation in the way you move through the world and the activities you choose to pursue. Syndicate jobs, optional content and different approaches to encounters can make separate play sessions feel less alike. E-Day’s replay value is more likely to come from mastering combat routes, finding side paths and playing the campaign with different co-op groups. Neither official source provides a campaign-length figure, so a numerical comparison would be unsupported.
Tone and storytelling: two very different contracts
Outlaws is a scoundrel adventure
The Star Wars setting gives Outlaws a roguish, underworld tone. Kay’s work with syndicates, her partnership with Nix and the chance to move between planets create a story about risk, deals and survival on the fringes of a larger conflict. Even when combat is dangerous, the fantasy is that of a clever operator deciding when to sneak, bargain, improvise or shoot.

E-Day is horror and wartime survival
E-Day’s story begins with the Locust invasion, so its emotional register is darker and more immediate. The focus is on soldiers facing a sudden enemy and the brutality of Emergence Day. Set pieces and firefights serve a survival narrative rather than a travelogue through different cultures and criminal organizations.
If you want colorful locations, a companion character and a heist-flavored Star Wars atmosphere, Outlaws is the natural choice. If you want dread, military urgency and the feeling of holding a line against an overwhelming threat, E-Day is built for that mood.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Solo play and co-op
Outlaws is designed around a solo player
Outlaws is presented as a solo adventure. Its systems are built around Kay, Nix, stealth tools, traversal and personal decisions about syndicate jobs. The available descriptions do not present a campaign co-op mode, so you should buy it for a single-player experience rather than expecting a shared story campaign.
E-Day supports three campaign formats
Xbox lists E-Day’s campaign as playable in three ways:
- Alone.
- Two-player split-screen co-op.
- Online campaign co-op for up to four players.
That makes E-Day the clear choice if playing the story with friends or family is a requirement. Split-screen is especially significant for players who share one console and want a local campaign rather than separate online accounts.

Star Wars Outlaws platforms
Ubisoft lists Outlaws on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. PC availability includes Ubisoft Connect, Steam and Epic, and Ubisoft also lists Amazon Luna. Those storefront choices matter if you already have a preferred launcher or use cloud gaming through a supported service.
Gears of War: E-Day platforms
E-Day launched on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam. Xbox also documents Xbox Play Anywhere, cloud gaming and inclusion in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Buying decision by platform
| Your setup | More straightforward choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 owner | Outlaws | Outlaws is listed for PS5; E-Day is listed for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, not PS5. |
| Xbox Series X|S owner who subscribes to Game Pass | E-Day | Xbox documents Game Pass inclusion and cloud access. |
| Windows PC player choosing between launchers | Either | Both are listed for PC, with E-Day on Windows PC and Steam and Outlaws on Ubisoft Connect, Steam and Epic. |
| Local two-player household | E-Day | Its campaign explicitly supports two-player split-screen co-op. |
| Cloud-first player | E-Day, subject to availability | Xbox documents cloud gaming; Ubisoft lists Amazon Luna for Outlaws, but service access depends on region and catalog status. |
Cost and subscription considerations
The two games offer different access models, even though exact retail prices can vary by platform, edition, region and promotion. Outlaws is presented through retail and storefront purchases across its supported platforms. E-Day can be bought for Xbox, Windows PC or Steam, but its inclusion in Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass creates a subscription route that may be cheaper for someone who already maintains those plans.
Game Pass inclusion does not make every form of access free: you still need the qualifying subscription, and online campaign co-op requires a plan with online multiplayer. Check the current Xbox terms in your region for the active catalog and multiplayer requirements.
Which one should you buy?
Choose Star Wars Outlaws when…
- You want a solo campaign rather than a co-op shooter.
- You prefer an open world with multiple planets, optional activity and route choice.
- You enjoy stealth, gadgets, distractions and selecting when to use the blaster.
- You want syndicate relationships and a heist story in the Star Wars underworld.
- You play on PlayStation 5 or want Ubisoft Connect, Steam, Epic or Amazon Luna availability.
Choose Gears of War: E-Day when…
- You want a campaign centered on third-person cover-shooter combat.
- You prefer a darker horror and survival tone.
- You need two-player split-screen or online campaign co-op for up to four players.
- You want a directed origin story with open pockets and side paths rather than a full open world.
- You use Xbox Series X|S or Windows PC and can take advantage of Game Pass, Play Anywhere or cloud gaming.
When both sound appealing
Use your preferred activity as the tiebreaker. Imagine the first hour you want to play: if it is sneaking through a location with Nix, using a gadget, traveling to another planet and deciding which syndicate job to accept, choose Outlaws. If it is taking cover with a friend, coordinating a push and surviving the opening of the Locust invasion, choose E-Day.
What the official information does not establish
There is no directly comparable critic score, sales total, campaign-length figure or performance benchmark in the official material described for these games. That means you should not use an invented review average, completion-time estimate or frame-rate claim to settle the comparison. The reliable distinctions are structural: Outlaws is an open-world solo adventure with flexible stealth-and-blaster play, while E-Day is a focused cover-shooter campaign with substantial co-op support and Game Pass access.
