Star Wars Outlaws takes place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Han Solo has been captured, the Empire still dominates much of the galaxy, and criminal syndicates are exploiting the disorder. You play Kay Vess, a young scoundrel trying to win her freedom, with her merqaal companion Nix at her side.
This is a spoiler-light orientation to the setting, characters, factions, canon status, gameplay systems and available editions. It explains the situation you are entering without recounting the ending or late-game twists.

Where Star Wars Outlaws fits in the timeline
The game is set during the Age of the Rebellion, after the Battle of Hoth shown in The Empire Strikes Back and before the rescue of Han Solo and the final confrontation in Return of the Jedi. The original trilogy’s major events are therefore happening around Kay, but she is not part of the Rebel command structure or the Jedi storyline.

The Empire remains powerful, yet its attention is divided by the rebellion. Smugglers, bounty hunters and syndicates use the gaps in imperial control to move contraband, settle scores and recruit desperate people. Outlaws focuses on that underworld rather than retelling the films’ battles.

| Timeline reference | What it means for the game |
|---|---|
| After The Empire Strikes Back | Hoth has fallen and Han Solo is in imperial custody. The galaxy is under pressure, with the Empire pursuing enemies and suppressing dissent. |
| Before Return of the Jedi | The rescue of Han and the Rebellion’s final assault have not yet occurred. The game does not assume that those later events have happened. |
| Story viewpoint | Kay operates among criminals, fixers and bounty hunters instead of serving as a Jedi or a Rebel officer. |
Ubisoft describes Outlaws as the first open-world Star Wars game. That is a product-positioning description: the game gives you broad areas to explore across several planets, rather than a single linear route.
The spoiler-light premise
Kay Vess is looking for a way out
Kay Vess is an emerging scoundrel who wants freedom and a chance to begin again. Before the main events, she and Nix survive by pulling small cons and taking jobs that keep them moving. Kay is capable, but she is not introduced as an established underworld legend. Her lack of status is important: powerful organizations can threaten her, and every opportunity carries a cost.
Nix is more than a sidekick
Nix is Kay’s merqaal companion and her closest partner. The pair have worked together since Kay’s early scams. In the field, Nix can help with distractions, retrieve objects and interact with situations Kay cannot reach alone. Their relationship also gives the story an emotional center that is separate from the syndicates’ politics.

The criminal underworld becomes the central problem
Kay’s attempt to secure a new life draws the attention of Sliro and his organization, Zerek Besh. Survival means finding work, making alliances and deciding which criminals can be trusted long enough to get the next job done. The game presents these choices as practical decisions rather than a simple good-versus-evil alignment: helping one faction may create an opening while making another hostile.

Sliro and Vail
Sliro is the leader of Zerek Besh and operates from Canto Bight. He is a central antagonist whose organization drives the main threat facing Kay. Vail is a skilled bounty hunter hired to track her. Their pursuit gives the campaign a personal pressure that sits alongside the wider faction conflicts.
Which syndicates appear?
Several groups compete for influence. They do not all have the same history in Star Wars, and understanding that distinction helps explain why Kay’s reputation matters.
| Faction | Role in the setup | What to expect without spoilers |
|---|---|---|
| Zerek Besh | A new criminal organization led by Sliro. | The main source of the danger surrounding Kay and the force most directly connected to her pursuit. |
| Pyke Syndicate | An established underworld power. | A rival group offering work and influence while pursuing its own interests. |
| Hutt Cartel | An established criminal power in the Star Wars setting. | One of the major organizations Kay can deal with through jobs and negotiations. |
| Ashiga Clan | A new syndicate developed in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. | A distinct faction whose relationship with Kay can affect the opportunities available to her. |
| Crimson Dawn | Included among the game’s syndicate content. | Its precise place in the unfolding story is best discovered while playing. |
The important point is that these groups are not just background names. Jobs, favors and betrayals change Kay’s standing with them, so your route through the underworld can differ from another player’s.

How reputation changes the story
Outlaws uses syndicate reputation as a narrative system. Kay’s standing with a faction affects the jobs it offers, the places she can enter and the rewards she can receive. A profitable deal with one group can damage her relationship with another, while a risky choice may unlock a different chain of opportunities later.

What a reputation decision can change
- Available work: Factions may offer contracts or refuse to deal with Kay depending on her standing.
- Access: Better relationships can open locations and services that hostile factions keep closed.
- Rewards: Faction-specific benefits can become available as trust improves.
- Future leverage: Helping one syndicate can create pressure from its rivals, changing how later jobs feel.
This is not presented as a single morality meter. Kay is an independent operator trying to survive, and the system reflects the consequences of choosing who gets her help. You can take calculated risks, repair a damaged relationship through later work or accept that some groups will remain hostile.
The main characters at a glance
| Character | Position in the story |
|---|---|
| Kay Vess | The playable scoundrel seeking freedom and a fresh start. |
| Nix | Kay’s merqaal companion and partner in cons and field operations. |
| Sliro | Leader of Zerek Besh and a central antagonist. |
| Vail | A bounty hunter hired by Zerek Besh to find Kay. |
You do not need to know the characters from the original trilogy to understand this cast. The game introduces Kay’s circumstances and explains why each faction or pursuer matters as the campaign develops.
How the open-world structure supports the story
Outlaws is a third-person open-world adventure across distinct planets. Exploration combines cities, cantinas, outdoor routes and speeder travel. Missions can involve fighting, stealing, sneaking or outwitting a target, giving Kay several ways to approach an underworld job.
Contracts and faction assignments provide the connective tissue between the larger story missions. A contract is not merely a combat activity: accepting it may improve one relationship, expose Kay to a rival or alter which options are available when she returns to a settlement. The result is a campaign shaped by the alliances you prioritize rather than a completely fixed sequence of errands.

- Use Nix’s abilities during scouting and infiltration instead of treating him as cosmetic company.
- Explore settlements and cantinas between major missions; the underworld contacts there can reveal contracts and alternative opportunities.
Is Star Wars Outlaws canon?
Ubisoft says Kay and her story were developed in close collaboration with Lucasfilm Games to make them an authentic part of the wider Star Wars galaxy and to respect the source material and the period in which the game is set. It is therefore reasonable to describe Outlaws as an officially developed, canon-compatible Star Wars story.
That wording matters because the game lets players make different choices about jobs and faction relationships. Those individual playthroughs can diverge, so it is safer to say the setting and characters are official parts of the wider galaxy than to claim that every possible player decision represents one fixed historical sequence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need to watch the movies first?
No. Outlaws introduces Kay, Nix, Sliro and the syndicates directly, so it can be your first Star Wars game. You will still understand the immediate objective: Kay is trying to escape a dangerous criminal situation and build a new life.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWatching The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi beforehand adds context to the timeline, especially the references to Hoth, Han Solo and the Empire’s current position. It is useful background, not a prerequisite. The game’s underworld viewpoint also means it does not require detailed knowledge of Jedi history or Rebel military strategy.

The base game contains Kay’s main campaign and its open-world faction system. Ubisoft also lists additional story and bonus content:
| Content | Type | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Wild Card | Story pack | One of the two named story expansions. |
| A Pirate’s Fortune | Story pack | The second named story expansion. |
| Jabba’s Gambit | Bonus mission/content | Listed by Ubisoft among the additional game content. |

Gold and Ultimate editions include the Season Pass and additional bonuses. If you only want Kay’s primary campaign, compare the base game with the cost of the Season Pass rather than assuming every bonus is essential to the main story.
Which edition or format should you choose?
Choose the base game when
- You mainly want Kay’s core story and the open-world faction system.
- You prefer to decide later whether the two story packs are worth adding.
- You are buying a used or physical copy and want to confirm exactly which extras are included.
Consider a Season Pass edition when
- You already know you want both named story packs.
- You want the listed bonus mission and cosmetic or themed additions bundled at purchase.
- The regional price difference is lower than buying the expansions separately.
Physical versus digital
Digital editions are tied to the platform account and regional storefront. Physical stock and included codes can differ by territory, especially for used copies. Check the box or listing for the platform, included Season Pass and redemption region before paying.
What this guide deliberately does not reveal
The identity of every later ally or enemy, the resolution of Kay’s conflict with Zerek Besh, and the precise role of certain syndicates are best experienced in the campaign. Knowing the era, the core cast and the reputation system is enough to understand the opening without removing the reasons to explore.
Start with the assumption that Kay’s alliances are provisional. Listen to what each faction wants, use Nix as an active partner and remember that a lucrative job can have consequences beyond its immediate reward. That mindset matches the game’s central idea: surviving the underworld by deciding whom to trust and when to take the risk.
