Star Wars Genesis is not a standalone game. It is a free, fan-made total-conversion modlist for the PC Steam edition of Starfield. The project replaces or expands much of the base game with Star Wars-inspired locations, ships, factions, weapons, music, enemies, quests, lightsabers and Force abilities. Version 8.8.3 offers a defined story campaign inside a much larger open-ended sandbox, but it remains an expanding fan project rather than a finished, official Star Wars role-playing game.
What Star Wars Genesis actually is
Creator DeityVengy describes Genesis as a free, fan-made total-conversion project for Starfield, built with other creators’ mods and his own work. GamingBible called it a total conversion with a new story, characters and quests, while The Escapist reported that the modlist combines existing modifications into a new main questline featuring Force powers.

This is a substantial transformation rather than a small cosmetic pack. In a Nexus Mods interview dated October 7, 2024, DeityVengy said the original list contained about 100 mods, later moved to Wabbajack automation, and involved rewriting more than 5,000 lines of Starborn and non-player-character dialogue for the converted main story.

How much content version 8.8.3 contains
The official 8.8.3 guide estimates approximately 20–30 hours of structured story content and another 10–20 hours of progression-focused play. The latter includes hunting unique gear, crafting, exploration, lightsaber development and Force abilities.

The guide’s own framing is important: Genesis is a short, self-contained narrative paired with an open-ended sandbox, not a fully realized Star Wars RPG with the breadth and polish of a commercial release. The project is still expanding, so later versions may change its quest coverage, balance and technical requirements.

What the conversion adds to Starfield
Star Wars locations, factions and missions
The Escapist reported replacements or expansions for weapons, music, enemy artificial intelligence, locations, factions, bosses and quest content, including features made specifically for Genesis. PC Gamer’s August 21, 2025 report described visits to Tatooine and Mos Eisley, making the modlist feel more like a connected Star Wars adventure than a generic space reskin.

Alien character choices
Character creation can include species such as Rodian, Trandoshan, Duros, Mon Calamari and Gungan. These options give a playthrough a stronger Star Wars identity than Starfield’s original human-focused setup.

Ships and space travel
The reported ship roster includes the Millennium Falcon/YT-1300, X-Wings, TIE Fighters and Naboo craft. You can therefore approach exploration and combat with recognizable Star Wars silhouettes rather than only the base game’s original ship designs.
Lightsabers and Force abilities
Lightsabers are part of Genesis’ equipment and progression systems, and the converted story uses Force powers. Their exact balance can change as the list develops, but they are central systems rather than a single decorative weapon.

What you need before installing Genesis

Game Pass and Microsoft Store installations are excluded by the guide. The project also lists ROG Ally and Steam Deck as incompatible, so buying the Steam version alone does not make Genesis portable-console compatible.
How installation works
- Prepare the base game. Install the non-pirated Steam edition of Starfield, install Shattered Space, and confirm the game is on version 1.16.244 or the version required by the current Genesis guide.
- Use internal NVMe storage. Put the game and modlist on an internal NVMe SSD. The guide says external SSDs and hard-disk drives will not work for Genesis.
- Remove conflicts. Disable or remove Creation Store additions and Vortex-managed mods that could overwrite Genesis files.
- Install through Wabbajack. Wabbajack automates the large modlist installation. A Nexus Mods login is required; a Premium account can make downloading hundreds of files easier, but it is not the same as a separate Genesis purchase.
- Set English before launching. Genesis requires English language settings according to the guide.
- Start a new save. Do not continue a pre-Genesis Starfield character. Create a new save after the list is installed to avoid incompatible data and quest states.
PC hardware and texture-pack reality
Storage speed is a hard requirement, not merely a loading-time preference. The guide specifically requires an internal NVMe SSD and rules out external SSDs and HDDs.

Graphics memory also affects usability. The guide warns that systems with 6–12 GB of VRAM may experience menu lag. Optional high-definition overhauls can add more than 100 GB of 2K–8K textures and are best attempted with at least 16 GB of VRAM. That 16 GB figure is guidance for the large HD texture additions, not a universal minimum for every Genesis configuration.
- Minimum practical setup: Internal NVMe storage, supported Steam installation, the required expansion and enough VRAM to avoid the guide’s menu-lag warning.
- High-definition setup: At least 16 GB of VRAM is recommended when using the optional 2K–8K texture overhauls, plus more than 100 GB of additional texture storage.
- Unsupported targets: Steam Deck and ROG Ally are listed as incompatible, and Game Pass/Microsoft Store copies are not supported.
Is Genesis a full Star Wars RPG?
It delivers many of the ingredients players want: alien characters, faction allegiance, ships, open exploration, crafting, lightsabers, Force powers and an unleveled world. The combination can feel closer to an open-world Star Wars role-playing game than any ordinary Starfield mod.
Its limits are equally clear. The campaign currently covers Acts 1 and 2, its story scope is intentionally short, and the project is still being expanded. Expect a curated fan-made conversion with a substantial sandbox after the main quests, not a complete replacement for a finished commercial RPG.

- Install Genesis if you own the Steam PC version and Shattered Space, have an internal NVMe SSD, and want to assemble a large modded sandbox around Star Wars themes.
- Plan for technical setup time if you are uncomfortable with Wabbajack, load-order troubleshooting or starting over with a new save.
- Skip it for now if you need a standalone executable, official canon, handheld compatibility or a fully completed multi-act campaign.
The Bottom Line
Genesis is the closest thing its current feature set offers to an open-world Star Wars RPG inside Starfield: a 20–30-hour story, 10–20 hours of progression play, alien species, iconic ships, lightsabers and Force powers. Treat it as a demanding, evolving PC modlist—not a finished standalone game—and the project’s strengths and limitations are both clear.
