For a story-led playthrough, start with Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, then play Jedi: Fallen Order before Jedi: Survivor. Place Star Wars: Squadrons late in the Galactic Civil War. Treat Battlefront II (2017) as a campaign spanning decades, rather than as a single point in the timeline. This is a curated guide to major narrative games, not a complete chronology of every Star Wars game.
What order should I play the Star Wars games in?
- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic — the ancient Old Republic period, roughly 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire.
- Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order — after Order 66, during the Reign of the Empire.
- Star Wars Jedi: Survivor — five years after Fallen Order, still during the Reign of the Empire.
- Star Wars: Squadrons — near the end of the Galactic Civil War, during the Age of the Rebellion.
- Star Wars: Battlefront II (2017) — follow its single-player campaign as a long arc spanning the period around the destruction of the second Death Star and onward toward The Force Awakens.
The sequence is based on where each story sits in the fictional timeline, not when the games were released. The two Jedi games are the clearest direct continuation; the other entries are distinct stories in different eras.

Where each game fits
1. Knights of the Old Republic: the ancient Republic
Knights of the Old Republic (often shortened to KOTOR) opens this selection because its setting is roughly four thousand years before the Galactic Empire. StarWars.com describes a period in which hundreds of Jedi have fallen in battle against the Sith. The role-playing story lets the player shape the protagonist’s choices, including a path toward the light or dark side. StarWars.com’s game page supports this broad placement, but does not establish an exact order for KOTOR relative to every other Old Republic game.
2. Jedi: Fallen Order: after Order 66
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order takes place during the Reign of the Empire, after the purge of the Jedi. Cal Kestis, a Padawan who survived Order 66, is hunted by Imperial Inquisitors. It is an action-adventure story and the first game in Cal’s sequence. The official game page identifies its premise and era.

- The following games are included in the cartridge: STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (3.6 GB)
- STAR WARS Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (1.1 GB)
- STAR WARS Episode I Racer (254 MB)
- STAR WARS Republic Commando (2.5 GB)
- STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (3.4 GB)
3. Jedi: Survivor: five years later
Play Star Wars Jedi: Survivor directly after Fallen Order. The official page says it picks up five years after its predecessor and continues Cal’s story during the Reign of the Empire. StarWars.com’s Survivor page establishes the five-year gap.
4. Squadrons: late in the Galactic Civil War
Star Wars: Squadrons belongs near the end of the Galactic Civil War, in the Age of the Rebellion. Its single-player campaign is a self-contained starfighter story; multiplayer dogfights are also available, but they are not a continuation of the campaign’s narrative. The official page gives a broad era placement rather than an exact in-universe year. EA’s Squadrons page describes the game and campaign.

5. Battlefront II (2017): a campaign across decades
The single-player campaign in Star Wars: Battlefront II follows an Imperial special-forces story across thirty years. Its arc begins around the destruction of the second Death Star and extends toward the period of The Force Awakens. It is more accurate to place the campaign across that stretch than to assign it one slot beside games with more tightly bounded stories. StarWars.com’s campaign coverage, published November 17, 2017, describes the story’s span.

The game also includes multiplayer battles across three eras. Those maps are not the same thing as the single-player campaign’s chronology; use the campaign when following the narrative order.

How to choose a starting point
| Game | Story placement | Narrative connection | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Knights of the Old Republic | Roughly 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire | Standalone Old Republic story in this selection | Role-playing game with player-directed choices |
| Jedi: Fallen Order | Reign of the Empire, after Order 66 | First part of Cal Kestis’s story | Single-player action-adventure |
| Jedi: Survivor | Five years after Fallen Order | Direct continuation of Cal’s story | Single-player action-adventure |
| Squadrons | Near the end of the Galactic Civil War | Self-contained campaign | Starfighter combat; campaign and multiplayer |
| Battlefront II (2017) | Campaign spans the period around the second Death Star’s destruction toward The Force Awakens | Long campaign arc | Single-player campaign and multiplayer battles |
For a connected character story, begin with Fallen Order and continue with Survivor. Choose Squadrons for a contained starfighter campaign, or KOTOR for a much older, choice-driven role-playing story. The Battlefront II campaign is the pick for a story that crosses a broad stretch of the saga’s history.
Announced, not part of the playable order yet
Lucasfilm Games announced Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic in December 2025 as an all-new story set at the end of the Old Republic. The announcement does not establish a release date or current availability, so it belongs in a status note rather than among games a reader can currently play. See the Lucasfilm Games announcement.

What this timeline does—and does not—cover
This is a practical order for selected major, story-led games, not a claim that every Star Wars game has been placed. StarWars.com’s era labels help locate stories broadly, but the official pages cited here do not provide exact years for every campaign or a comprehensive game-by-game chronology. The Old Republic setting of KOTOR is clear; its precise position among all Old Republic titles is not established by the cited game page.

Continuity also matters: this timeline uses official era and story-placement information to explain settings, but it does not claim that every older game has the same continuity status as current-era stories. For broader context, StarWars.com’s overview of the Star Wars: Timelines reference book says it chronologically maps the wider story, including games. That is optional background, not a prerequisite for playing these titles in order.
