STAR WARS: Galactic Racer does not support split-screen multiplayer. The official FAQ says there is no mode for two people to race simultaneously on one screen or one console. Multiplayer is online PvP: each racer uses a separate connected system. Quick Race and Multiplayer Tour support up to 12 speeders, while Quick Podrace and Podracer Tour support up to 8 podracers.
If you are asking, “Can you play Star Wars Galactic Racer with a friend?”, the answer is yes online, including PC-to-console crossplay. Friends in the same room need separate systems, accounts and the relevant platform online subscription. Campaign, Scenario and Arcade modes are solo, so passing one controller back and forth is possible but is not local multiplayer.

Split-screen and online play at a glance
| Question | Split-screen or local simultaneous play | Online multiplayer |
|---|---|---|
| Is it supported? | No. The publisher FAQ explicitly says split-screen multiplayer is unsupported. | Yes. The game advertises online PvP and multiplayer. |
| How do friends race together? | There is no documented same-screen or same-console versus mode. | Each player connects from a separate PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S system. |
| Maximum race size | No local player limit is listed because the mode is absent. | Up to 12 players in speeder events and up to 8 in podracer events. |
| Crossplay | Not applicable. | PC and console crossplay is enabled by default and can be turned off. |
| Party size | Not applicable. | Up to three players in a party according to the FAQ; an increase to six was described as a planned update, not a confirmed shipped feature. |
| Console subscription | None for a mode that does not exist. | US PlayStation listings require PS Plus. US Xbox listings require Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate for console online multiplayer. |
Those limits describe online rooms, not the number of people who can sit together with one console. Crossplay also means meeting online across supported platforms; it does not create a local couch mode.
The direct answer to the two common questions
Does Star Wars Galactic Racer have split-screen?
No. The official FAQ states, “No, STAR WARS: Galactic Racer does not support split-screen multiplayer.” That means two controllers connected to one PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S will not place two human racers on the same television. The same applies to trying to run two players from one PC installation.

Can you play Star Wars Galactic Racer with a friend?
Yes, if each person joins online from a separate supported system. A PlayStation 5 player can race a PC or Xbox player through crossplay when the setting is enabled. Friends can be in the same house, but they still need separate connected setups. The game does not document a local-network shortcut that turns one console into a two-player station.
What the lack of split-screen means
Split-screen normally renders two or more views on the same television while multiple controllers use one console. Galactic Racer’s stated feature set does not include that arrangement. The official FAQ’s answer is categorical for the current version: “No, STAR WARS: Galactic Racer does not support split-screen multiplayer.” No same-console local-versus option is described in the FAQ, platform listings or the mode descriptions.
This matters most when buying the game for a family room, party or two-player setup. A second controller alone will not let another person join a race. Starting Campaign, Scenario or Arcade with one player and handing over the controller later creates a turn-taking activity, not two simultaneous racers. The distinction also prevents a common misunderstanding about the word “multiplayer”: in this game, the supported multiplayer feature is online competition.

How online races are structured
Speeder events: up to 12 racers
Quick Race and Multiplayer Tour are the larger online formats. The FAQ sets their maximum at 12 players. If fewer humans enter than the event allows, the FAQ says artificial-intelligence racers fill the open places, so an incompletely populated room is not necessarily a failed matchmaking attempt. A 12-player room therefore describes the event ceiling, not a guarantee that 12 friends can join the same party.
Podracer events: up to 8 racers
Quick Podrace and Podracer Tour have a lower maximum of 8 players. The different cap is tied to the craft and event type, not to whether players are on PC or console. Do not use the 12-player figure when describing a podracer event. If your group is larger than eight, it cannot all occupy one podracer race, although AI racers can still fill any unoccupied slots.
Quick events and Tours
The names distinguish two kinds of online activity. A Quick Race or Quick Podrace is the short-form choice for joining an event directly. Multiplayer Tour and Podracer Tour are tour-based formats; the matchmaking rules matter more there because a player who joins after a race has started may wait as a spectator until the next race in the Tour. A spectator screen can therefore be normal timing behavior rather than a failed invitation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePlayer-count math: race capacity is not party capacity
There are three different numbers to keep separate. First is the maximum number of racers in an event: 12 for speeder formats and 8 for podracer formats. Second is the party limit: the FAQ describes parties of up to three players at the time it was accessed in 2026. Third is the number of human opponents actually present; AI fills open race positions when the lobby is not full.
The FAQ describes a planned increase from three-person parties to six in the first weeks after launch. That is a stated aim, not confirmation that every current build has the larger cap. If six friends are organizing a session, verify the live party limit in the game or a newer official update instead of assuming the planned number is active.

A party of two can also encounter a specific start condition. When those two players look for a newly created Tour or Quick Race, the FAQ says a third unique player outside the party is needed before the race starts. This explains why a two-person group might wait even though the event itself allows eight or 12 racers. It is a matchmaking rule, not evidence of an undiscovered local mode.
Crossplay, parties and matchmaking
Crossplay is on by default
The official FAQ says crossplay between PC and consoles is enabled by default. A player can turn it off, but doing so limits the pool of systems that can be matched together. Xbox’s platform listing also advertises Xbox cross-platform multiplayer. Crossplay lets friends on supported systems meet through the internet; it does not allow two people to share one console or display.

Current party limit
The FAQ describes online parties of up to three players at the time it was accessed in 2026. It also describes an intended increase to six players in the first weeks after launch. That six-player figure is a plan rather than evidence that the update has shipped, so treat three as the documented current limit unless a newer in-game notice or official update says otherwise.
Why a two-person party may wait
Matchmaking prioritizes races with vacancies and tries to use the player’s region when possible. The FAQ adds a specific condition: a party of two looking for a newly created Tour or Quick Race needs a third unique player who is not in that party before the race can start. In practice, two friends may need to wait for another participant even though the event’s overall capacity is much higher. This is a matchmaking rule, not a hidden local mode.
Late arrivals in a Tour
A player who joins after a Tour race has begun may be placed in Spectator Mode until the next race. Seeing a spectator screen therefore does not indicate that the account, console or crossplay setting is broken. It can simply mean the current race is already underway.
What you need to race friends online
Each participant needs a separate supported system and an internet connection. The game’s worldwide launch platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. On consoles, online-service requirements apply in addition to owning the game.

Put each player on their own PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. Two controllers connected to one console are not a substitute for two systems.
- Confirm the platform account setup. Each player should be signed in to the account used for their copy of the game and online service. Cross-platform groups can include PC and console players while crossplay remains enabled.
- Check the console subscription for your region. The US PlayStation store listing says PS Plus is required for online play. The US Xbox listing says console online multiplayer requires Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate. Service names and rules can change, and requirements may differ outside the United States.
- Leave crossplay enabled unless you have a reason to restrict it. It is on by default and gives matchmaking a broader pool. Turn it off only when every player is on a compatible platform group and you intentionally want a narrower pool.
- Form the party within the documented cap. The FAQ currently describes parties of up to three. If you are planning for six, verify that the announced increase has actually arrived in the version you are playing.
- Choose the event that matches the craft. Select Quick Race or Multiplayer Tour for speeders, with a 12-player maximum, or Quick Podrace or Podracer Tour for podracers, with an 8-player maximum.
- Allow for matchmaking behavior. A two-person party may need a third outside player before a newly created event starts. A late Tour entrant may spectate until the next race, and regional matchmaking can affect how quickly a room fills.
A practical race-night checklist
For friends planning a session, start by deciding whether everyone is using speeders or podracers, because that choice determines the event cap. Confirm that every participant has a separate PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S and is signed in. Console players should check their current regional online-service requirement before the session, since the listed service names apply to the US storefronts and may not match every country.
Leave crossplay enabled if the group spans PC, PlayStation and Xbox. Create or join the appropriate Quick event or Tour, then form a party no larger than the live limit shown by the game. If two people are waiting for a newly created event, allow time for a third player outside the party to be matched. If someone enters a Tour after a race has started, expect Spectator Mode until the next race rather than repeatedly restarting the invitation.
Finally, remember that the 12- and 8-player figures are maximum race sizes. They do not mean a party can always bring 12 or 8 friends together, and they do not describe local seats on a couch. AI opponents can occupy empty slots, so a smaller human group can still race without filling every position.

Playing with friends in the same room
Friends who are physically together can still race one another online, but each person must use a separate setup. For example, one player could use a PlayStation 5 while another uses a PC, provided both are connected, signed in and allowed to use crossplay. A room with one television and one console cannot display two simultaneous racers through the game’s supported features.
This arrangement may require additional copies of the game and, on consoles, separate online-service access. The available sources do not specify account-sharing rules, local-network shortcuts or a same-console workaround, so those should not be assumed. The reliable distinction is simple: same room is possible only by putting separate systems online; same screen is not documented.
Solo modes are not a local multiplayer substitute
Campaign
StarWars.com identifies Campaign as a solo mode. It provides the story-driven way to play without another human racer, but it does not add a second local driver.
Scenario
Scenario is also listed among the game’s solo content. It can give one player structured objectives or situations to complete, yet the mode remains single-player rather than couch co-op.
Arcade
Arcade is another solo option identified by the official game coverage. Two people can take turns attempting races or challenges, but the game will not show both human players competing at once on one display.
These modes mean the game is not “online-only.” It has playable single-player content as well as online PvP. They simply answer a different need from split-screen: one person plays at a time instead of several people sharing a race.
Which option fits your situation?
| Your situation | Best-supported choice | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Two people, one console and one TV | Take turns in Campaign, Scenario or Arcade | No simultaneous local race is documented. |
| Friends in the same house with separate systems | Online PvP with crossplay left on when needed | Each player connects separately; console subscription rules apply. |
| Friends on different platforms | Online PvP with PC-console crossplay | Crossplay is enabled by default and can be disabled. |
| A large group of speeder players | Quick Race or Multiplayer Tour | Maximum 12 online players; AI fills open slots. |
| A group choosing podracers | Quick Podrace or Podracer Tour | Maximum 8 online players; AI fills open slots. |
| A two-person party entering a new event | Join online and wait for an outside participant if necessary | The FAQ says a third unique player is needed before a newly created Tour or Quick Race starts. |
Platform, launch and editions
STAR WARS: Galactic Racer launched worldwide on October 6, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The official FAQ confirms physical Standard and Deluxe editions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Edition choice does not change the split-screen answer: no edition is documented as adding local simultaneous multiplayer.
Store listings are useful for checking the platform’s current online-play requirement, but subscription policies and names can change. The PS5 requirement cited here is from the US PlayStation listing, and the Xbox requirement is from the US Xbox listing; readers elsewhere should check their own region’s store before budgeting for online play. Exact subscription prices, promotional discounts and retailer stock are not fixed by the game FAQ, so confirm those details at purchase time.
What is and is not documented about buying for a group
The launch information identifies the game on three platform families and identifies physical Standard and Deluxe editions on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It does not say that buying a Deluxe edition unlocks a local mode, nor does it describe a bundle that supplies multiple online accounts. If several people plan to race, check the relevant storefront and account requirements for each platform rather than assuming one purchase covers every participant.

Likewise, the available feature descriptions do not promise local-area-network play, guest accounts, account sharing, or a second-player download that bypasses the normal platform setup. Those features should not be treated as workarounds for the missing split-screen mode. The supported route is separate systems connected to the game’s online service.

You expected a second controller to join
That behavior is consistent with the feature set rather than a controller fault. Move to separate systems and use online multiplayer, or choose a solo mode for turn-taking.
Your party is waiting for a race
Check whether the party has two members and is trying to start a newly created Quick Race or Tour. The FAQ says that situation requires a third player outside the party. A larger event capacity does not remove this specific start condition.
A friend can join but is spectating
In a Tour, a late joiner may be held in Spectator Mode until the next race. Wait for the current race to finish before treating the behavior as a problem.
Recommended Free Tools
Cross-platform friends cannot find one another
Verify that crossplay has not been switched off on one of the accounts. It is enabled by default, and disabling it narrows matchmaking to the remaining compatible platforms.
Console online play is unavailable
Check the console account’s online-service entitlement and region. The US listings specify PS Plus for PlayStation and Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate for Xbox console multiplayer. Those requirements are separate from the game having an internet connection.
The lobby is not full
An empty slot does not necessarily indicate a matchmaking error. The FAQ says AI racers fill open positions when fewer human players enter than the event allows. The race can therefore proceed with a smaller human group.
What to verify after updates
Online features can change through patches. In particular, the FAQ’s six-player party size is described as an intended early post-launch increase, not a confirmed capability at the time of the FAQ. Before organizing a large group, check the latest official FAQ, in-game notices or patch notes for the live party cap and any matchmaking changes. The current published information supports online races, crossplay and the event limits above, but it does not announce split-screen support.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can you play Star Wars Galactic Racer with a friend?
Yes, online. Each friend uses a separate PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, and PC-console crossplay is enabled by default unless a player turns it off.
Can friends in the same room race together?
Yes, only by using separate connected systems and the required accounts and online services. The game does not document a same-console or same-screen versus mode.
How many players can join one race?
Quick Race and Multiplayer Tour support up to 12 speeders. Quick Podrace and Podracer Tour support up to 8 podracers. AI racers fill open slots when fewer humans join.
How many people can be in an online party?
The FAQ describes a current limit of three players. It mentions an intended increase to six after launch, but that should be treated as planned until a current update confirms it.
Why is a two-person party waiting to start?
For a newly created Tour or Quick Race, the FAQ says a party of two needs a third unique player outside the party before the race can start. Matchmaking also prioritizes vacancies and region when possible.
Do PlayStation and Xbox require subscriptions?
Current US listings say PS Plus is required for PlayStation online play. Xbox console multiplayer requires Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate. Check your region because service names and rules can change.
Does Campaign support local co-op?
No. Campaign, Scenario and Arcade are identified as solo modes. Friends can take turns with one controller, but they cannot race simultaneously through those modes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is Galactic Racer online-only?
No. The game includes solo Campaign, Scenario and Arcade content as well as online PvP. It is simply not a split-screen or local simultaneous multiplayer game.
Could a future update add split-screen?
A later patch could change features, but the current official information does not announce split-screen. Check the latest FAQ or patch notes if local multiplayer is essential to your decision.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: STAR WARS: Galactic Racer has no supported split-screen mode. Two people cannot race simultaneously on one console and television. To compete with friends, use separate PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or PC systems and connect online.
Online limits depend on the event: up to 12 speeders or 8 podracers. Crossplay is on by default, parties are documented at three players with a six-player increase described as planned, and console players need the applicable regional online subscription. Campaign, Scenario and Arcade remain solo options for taking turns, not local multiplayer.
