Fuse Games CEO Matt Webster says Star Wars: Galactic Racer asks more of players than any racing game his studio has made before. In an interview with GamesRadar+, he pointed to multiple boost options, simultaneous face-button presses, mid-race ability switching, and strategic and tactical decisions made at very high speed. The game launched on October 6, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

“We are asking way more out of players in this game than I think we’ve ever done in a racing game with multiple boost things, pressing more than one face button at a time, switching up the abilities, and thinking strategically and tactically at the same time whilst traveling at 700 kilometers an hour and your eyes are on stalks.”

In the same interview he added: “One of the things that’s really interesting for me is that modern gamers can manage a greater amount of cognitive load.”
#1 Best Overall
- Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga PS5
Read the first statement as a comparison of how much the game asks players to track and do during a race, not as a measurement. Webster is describing his studio’s games, not making a claim about all racing games or all modern players.
The demands behind the quote
Webster named four areas of player effort. Each one is a separate input or decision that a player has to handle while the race is running:
Rank #2
- 100+ classic games lovingly presented with best-in-class emulation and modern quality-of-life enhancements – and the ability to play classic games that have not been available for ages
- Discover the brand that launched the modern video game industry and the creative individuals behind it through interviews, archival images, special source material and behind-the-scenes content within an interactive timeline
- Emulation of games created for seven hardware platforms: Arcade, Atari 800, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Atari 7800, Atari Jaguar, Atari Lynx
- Over 60 minutes of exclusive interviews with key players in the games industry – from early Atari designers and engineers and other luminaries of the gaming world -- as they discuss Atari’s enduring impact on the video entertainment landscape
- A retrospective on gaming history that is a must-own for collectors and fans of video games
- Multiple boost options. Boost is not a single button press; the interview describes more than one boost option to manage.
- Simultaneous face-button presses. Some actions require pressing more than one face button at the same time.
- Ability switching. Players change between abilities during play rather than setting one loadout and leaving it.
- Strategic and tactical decisions at speed. Webster ties these choices to the 700 km/h pace he describes.
GamesRadar+ also reports two further pressures. Contact with walls can be destructive, and the campaign allows three vehicle destructions before a run ends. These details come from the interview report; they are not based on firsthand testing.
Cognitive load is Webster’s view
The cognitive-load remark is an opinion from the studio head. No study or organization figure was cited in the reporting to support the idea that modern players handle more mental load than earlier players. Treat it as the basis for his design thinking, not as a finding.

Where the Burnout connection stands
The interview ties Fuse Games to Burnout through the people behind it: the studio was formed by people with Criterion Games experience. That is a lineage link. It does not make Star Wars: Galactic Racer a Burnout sequel, and the reporting does not describe it as one. The table below separates what the coverage supports from what it does not.
| Basis of comparison | What the reporting establishes |
|---|---|
| Team background | Fuse Games was formed by people with Criterion Games experience (GamesRadar+, October 8, 2026) |
| Speed | Webster cites 700 km/h as the pace players are asked to make decisions at |
| Collision risk | Wall contact can be destructive; three vehicle destructions end a campaign run |
| Control and decision load | Multiple boosts, simultaneous face-button presses, and ability switching |
| Direct sequel relationship | Not stated in the reporting |
| Link to a specific Burnout release by year | Not stated in the interview; the “25 years” count is not calculated there |
Why the “25 years” number needs checking
The headline’s “25 years after Burnout” is a framing device. The interview does not establish which Burnout release the count starts from. To verify the number, identify the specific Burnout installment you mean and take its release year from its publisher or another primary source, then count forward. Do not derive it from the Galactic Racer interview alone.
