Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Zero Company Show How a Franchise Can Make Room for Different Stories

Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Star Wars Zero Company make a useful case for letting a familiar universe serve very different kinds of stories. One is built around racing runs; the other around turn-based squad tactics. That is a lesson about creative identity and payoff—not proof that Star Wars movies as a whole have failed to learn it. Director Matt Shakman’s comments about The Fantastic Four: First Steps offer a specific Marvel example of a story designed to stand on its own.

Two Star Wars games, two distinct reasons to play

Lucasfilm describes Star Wars Zero Company as a single-player, turn-based tactics game developed by Bit Reactor in collaboration with Respawn Entertainment and Lucasfilm Games. Set in the twilight of the Clone Wars, it follows Hawks, a former Republic officer leading a squad of professionals. The appeal suggested by that premise is command: assembling a team and making tactical decisions.

Lucasfilm describes Star Wars: Galactic Racer as a runs-based, high-stakes reinvention of racing set in the lawless Outer Rim. It takes a very different route into the setting. Rather than put the player in command of a squad, it puts racing and repeated runs at the center.

Game Genre and core activity How the Star Wars setting fits
Star Wars Zero Company Single-player, turn-based tactics; lead a squad of professionals. Its Clone Wars-era premise places a tactical team in a recognizable period of the galaxy.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer Runs-based racing; make route and loadout choices across repeat attempts. Its Outer Rim setting gives the racing a place within Star Wars rather than making the genre itself the whole identity.

The point is not that the games have the same quality or approach. Their official descriptions show that the franchise can support sharply different core activities. The galaxy is a setting, not a requirement that every project tell one kind of story.

What Galactic Racer suggests about franchise worldbuilding

In its PS5 review, TechRadar describes a structure built around branching route choices, repeated races, vehicle and perk loadouts, and progression. The review’s positive case centers on the racing and replayability. It also notes that Shade has limited character depth and that some events become repetitive.

PC Gamer reviewer Jody Macgregor praises the game’s worldbuilding for making a race feel connected to a larger racing culture. That is a useful design idea: familiar names and locations matter most when they enrich the activity the player is actually doing, rather than substituting for it.

Macgregor also criticizes the story’s ending for offering little payoff after building expectation. That qualification matters. A strong premise or vivid setting can create interest, but setup alone does not make a story satisfying. Whatever the medium, the promised stakes and character arcs still need an ending that delivers on them.

Macgregor’s review gives Galactic Racer a score of 76. That is one publication’s editorial rating, not a measure of audience opinion or evidence about the franchise as a whole. His description that “The Star Wars movies have always had a mashup quality” is likewise his characterization, not an established historical finding.

Marvel's Wolverine PS5
  • Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
  • Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
  • An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
  • A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor

What lesson can the movies take—and what the evidence cannot prove

The strongest lesson here is modest but useful: give each project a clear identity, make the franchise setting serve that identity, and deliver on the expectations the story creates. Zero Company and Galactic Racer demonstrate different genre lanes in their official premises; the reviews of Galactic Racer show both how setting can deepen a core activity and how weak payoff can undercut a setup.

That is an argument about what can make a Star Wars project work on its own terms. It does not establish that the movies in general have failed to learn the lesson. The available sources provide no robust industry statistic comparing Star Wars games with Star Wars films, and no named statistical finding that demonstrates such a failure. A broad verdict about the movies would go beyond what these examples support.

Mortal Shell 2’s combat system is agile and expressive. Stamina gauges are removed, and execution options have been enhanced, delivering a kinetic and chaotic dark power fantasy. Precision meets intensity in high-stakes combat.

Why The Fantastic Four is a bounded Marvel comparison

In a TechRadar report, The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman said: “You don’t need to see other Marvel movies or shows to appreciate it. There are no Easter eggs. There are no other heroes. It’s just about them, their world, and their story.”

That is Shakman’s description of his creative intent for this film. It provides a concrete example of a movie meant to be approachable without prior viewing while remaining part of a shared franchise. It does not show that every Marvel film follows the same approach, nor does it establish that this approach is automatically better. The useful comparison is about entry requirements and story focus, not quality or commercial performance.

  • Includes immersive environmental puzzles and mazes.

When a shared universe helps rather than overwhelms

  • Start with a clear core activity or story. Squad command and racing runs are distinct starting points; franchise recognition should not obscure what the audience is being invited to do or follow.
  • Use the setting to add texture. A broader world can make a race feel part of a culture or give a tactical squad a meaningful historical context.
  • Make the story’s entry point legible. A viewer should be able to understand the central characters and conflict without treating years of franchise history as required homework.
  • Pay off what the setup promises. Worldbuilding can raise expectations; it cannot replace an ending that resolves or meaningfully develops them.

These are editorial principles, not a scorecard that settles the merits of every Star Wars or Marvel release. The two games make the case for variety particularly clearly; Shakman’s comments offer one film-specific example of self-contained storytelling. Together, they support a more precise claim than the title’s broad provocation: a franchise can stay recognizable while allowing each project to stand on its own.
