Star Wars Canon vs. Legends in Video Games: What Players Need to Know

Lucasfilm’s April 25, 2014 announcement placed past Expanded Universe stories—including video games—under the Legends banner. It also said the post–Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe would not be the story told by Episodes VII–IX. That distinction is a guide to continuity, not a verdict on whether an older game is worth playing.

What did Lucasfilm change in 2014?

Lucasfilm said the Expanded Universe had grown across comics, novels, video games, and other formats. As it began a coordinated approach to future storytelling, it announced that past Expanded Universe stories would remain available under a new label, Legends. Its announcement specifically said the post–Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe would not be the story told by Episodes VII–IX. Read Lucasfilm’s April 25, 2014 announcement.

In practical terms, use Legends for the earlier Expanded Universe stories covered by that announcement. Newer Star Wars stories are developed in a connected storytelling landscape across formats. For any particular game, check its official description and context rather than relying only on its release date or a familiar name appearing in it.

Does a familiar character or idea make an old game canon?

No. A character, location, object, or concept can appear in more than one Star Wars story without bringing an older game’s full plot into current continuity. StarWars.com’s 2025 discussion of connections across games and other media offers examples: Battlefront II features Luke Skywalker’s discovery of the Pillio Star Compass, also glimpsed in The Last Jedi or its visual guide, while Jedi: Survivor uses familiar characters and locations. Those connections are not evidence that every older game story is current canon. StarWars.com’s examples of connections across Star Wars games.

How should players assess a specific game?

Separate continuity from the details that help you decide whether to play. Official descriptions can establish a game’s era, whose story it follows, its gameplay format, and supported platforms; continuity status alone does not establish quality.

Are Legends games still worth playing?

Continuity and enjoyment answer different questions. A Legends label tells you how a story relates to the current connected narrative; it does not say whether the game is entertaining, historically interesting, or right for your preferred genre. Decide based on the game’s mechanics, story, platform availability, and your interest in that period of Star Wars. Check a current platform or retailer listing for the specific edition and compatibility before buying; availability varies and is not established by the continuity label.
