Standard Chartered has kept its $2 trillion stablecoin market-capitalization target but moved the expected milestone from the end of 2028 to 2030. The change follows a 2026 supply plateau: total stablecoins outstanding have stayed close to $300 billion–$320 billion for about a year, at roughly $309 billion most recently.
The same period shows much heavier use of the existing tokens. Standard Chartered’s analysis found average monthly on-chain transfer volume of just under $10 trillion in 2026, versus $4 trillion in 2025, while average monthly velocity doubled from 15 times to 30 times. In other words, the market’s stock of stablecoins stopped expanding quickly even as that stock circulated more rapidly.

What Standard Chartered changed
The bank’s earlier outlook called for a $2 trillion stablecoin market by the end of 2028. Its revised view retains the same target but shifts the date to 2030, making this a timing revision rather than a reduction in the expected market size.

| Measure | Earlier outlook | Revised outlook |
|---|---|---|
| Stablecoin market-capitalization target | $2 trillion | $2 trillion |
| Expected milestone | End of 2028 | 2030 |
| Current supply backdrop | About $309 billion, with supply roughly between $300 billion and $320 billion for around 12 months | |
| Primary reason for delay | Supply growth stalled during 2026 | |
Geoffrey Kendrick, Standard Chartered’s global head of digital-assets research, links the slowdown to weak crypto-market activity and characterizes it as cyclical. That is an analyst interpretation and an assumption behind the forecast, not proof that issuance will accelerate again.

Why a supply stall can coexist with rising transfers
Supply is a stock: it measures how many stablecoin units are outstanding. Transfer value is a flow: it measures the dollar value moved on-chain during a period. If holders reuse the same tokens more often, transfer volume can rise without a comparable increase in the number of tokens issued.
The 2026 figures fit that pattern. Supply remained near $309 billion, while average monthly transfer value rose to just under $10 trillion. May 2026 produced a record monthly on-chain transfer value of $19 trillion, according to Standard Chartered’s analysis as reported by The Block.

The usage figures behind the forecast revision
| Metric | 2025 | 2026 | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average monthly on-chain transfer volume | $4 trillion | Just under $10 trillion | More than doubled |
| Record monthly on-chain transfer value | Not stated | $19 trillion in May | New reported monthly record |
| Average monthly stablecoin velocity | 15 times | 30 times | Doubled |
| USDT monthly velocity | Not stated | About seven times | Reported 2026 level |
| USDC monthly velocity | 45 times | About 80 times | Rose by about 35 times |
Velocity expresses how often the outstanding supply turns over during a month. A 30-times average means the aggregate on-chain transfer value was about 30 times the supply during the period; it does not mean every individual coin changed hands exactly 30 times.
Why issuance may have slowed in 2026
Stablecoin supply generally expands when users need more dollar-denominated tokens and issuers create additional units against incoming funds. Standard Chartered’s explanation is that subdued crypto-market activity reduced that issuance demand. Under this reading, the plateau reflects a pause in the cycle rather than a permanent ceiling.

That explanation should be treated carefully. The available figures establish that supply stopped growing rapidly and that tokens circulated more intensely; they do not establish that a market rebound will necessarily produce another issuance surge. A recovery would have to generate sustained new demand, not merely more transfers among existing holders.
USDT and USDC show different turnover patterns
The reported velocity data also reveal a sharp difference between the two major dollar stablecoins. Monthly USDT velocity was about seven times in 2026. USDC velocity was about 80 times, up from 45 times in 2025.

These ratios describe turnover relative to each token’s outstanding supply, so they should not be read as market-share figures or as evidence that one token has eight times the users of another. They show that the supply base associated with USDC was being recycled particularly quickly in the period covered by the analysis.
Temporary pause or weaker-than-expected adoption?
What supports the cyclical interpretation
- Stablecoin supply has plateaued rather than collapsed, remaining within a relatively narrow $300 billion–$320 billion range for about a year.
- Transfer activity has strengthened materially, with average monthly volume rising from $4 trillion in 2025 to just under $10 trillion in 2026.
- Velocity has doubled overall, indicating that existing units are supporting more on-chain activity.
What remains unproven
- The data do not show when, or whether, supply will resume a sustained upward trend.
- High transfer value can reflect repeated movements by existing participants and does not by itself measure unique users, new accounts or end-user adoption.
- A record month such as May’s $19 trillion does not establish a permanent run rate.
The key test for the 2030 timetable is therefore renewed net issuance over several reporting periods. If supply begins expanding while elevated transfer activity persists, the delay may prove cyclical. If velocity stays high but supply remains flat, the market may be becoming more efficient at reusing existing liquidity without approaching the $2 trillion target on the original schedule.

What the 2030 target implies
At roughly $309 billion today, a $2 trillion market would be about six and a half times larger than the current supply. Moving the milestone to 2030 gives the forecast two additional years for that expansion compared with the former end-2028 schedule. It does not specify a year-by-year path, and the bank’s public summary does not provide a guaranteed growth rate.
The revised forecast is best understood as a long-term view that stablecoins can regain an issuance-led growth phase after the 2026 pause. The near-term evidence is more nuanced: outstanding supply is flat, but the existing supply is doing substantially more work.
Which indicators matter next
Readers assessing whether the delay is temporary should track the measures separately rather than relying on a single headline number:
Quick Recap
- Total supply: Look for a sustained move above the $300 billion–$320 billion plateau, not one short-lived spike.
- Net issuance and redemptions: New tokens must consistently exceed tokens removed from circulation for market capitalization to compound.
- Transfer value: Continued high on-chain volume would show ongoing use, but it should be considered alongside supply growth.
- Velocity: A rise can indicate efficient reuse of liquidity; a fall alongside new issuance could instead signal that supply is expanding faster than activity.
- Token mix: Changes in USDT and USDC velocity can reveal whether growth is broad-based or concentrated in one supply base.
