There is no confirmed $185 million Standard Bank investment in OPay in the available reporting. Bloomberg reported on August 18, 2026, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, that Standard Bank was in talks to buy a stake in the Nigerian payments company ahead of a possible US IPO. The report did not say the deal had closed or disclose an amount.

Bloomberg News, in a report carried by Bloomberg Law on August 18, 2026, said Standard Bank Group Ltd. was discussing a possible purchase of a stake in Opay Digital Services Ltd. The report attributed the information to people familiar with the matter who were not identified because the discussions were private. Is the $185 million placement confirmed?
No. The Bloomberg report did not state a $185 million figure, and the available sources do not establish an investment amount, stake percentage, valuation, price, closing date or definitive IPO timetable. The wording “wins” and “placement” therefore overstates what is known: the supported account is of talks about a possible stake purchase.

An unrelated 2024 announcement covered a Standard Bank and NAMFISA N$185 million property-development loan facility in Namibia. That is not an OPay transaction, and its amount should not be confused with US$185 million. NAMFISA
What is known about OPay’s ownership and valuation
Opera Limited’s 2025 Form 20-F provides dated shareholder context, not evidence of Standard Bank’s negotiations. Opera reported that it held a 9.5% ownership interest in privately held OPay as of December 31, 2025. Opera gave the carrying amount of its OPay investment as $294.6 million at that date, while warning that the estimate was uncertain because OPay shares had no active market. Opera’s valuation method used probability-weighted potential outcomes, including IPO and private-sale scenarios. The $0.2 billion to $6.0 billion range in its scenario inputs is not a reported transaction valuation or an estimate of what Standard Bank might pay.

A possible US IPO was part of Bloomberg’s account of OPay’s preparations, but the reporting does not establish that OPay filed an offering, set a date or committed to list. “Ahead of a possible IPO” describes reported context for the stake discussions, not a guarantee that a listing will happen.

What OPay does—and why older figures need dates
Opera said it incubated OPay in 2018. In a March 3, 2021 investor-relations post, Opera characterized OPay as a Nigerian payments business serving agents and merchants. The post cited company-reported historical figures: OPay’s gross transaction volume grew 4.5 times during 2020 to more than $2 billion in December alone, and its point-of-sale terminals represented 20% of offline payments in Nigeria at year-end.
