It removes dust, fingerprints and light food film without the extra cost or residue that a polish can leave. A dedicated stainless-steel cleaner is optional when you want to polish a compatible finish or tackle stubborn fingerprints, oil, water spots or buildup. The appliance manual and the exact finish must decide what is safe—black stainless, anti-fingerprint coatings and stainless-look laminates do not necessarily tolerate products made for traditional stainless steel.
Whichever method you use, work with the grain, choose a soft nonabrasive cloth and dry the surface completely. No controlled manufacturer study establishes that a specialty cleaner cleans better than dish soap for everyday soil; the available guidance consists of care instructions for specific finishes and appliances.

Dish soap or stainless-steel cleaner: the practical verdict
Use mild dish soap and warm or lukewarm water for normal daily soil on an appliance that is confirmed to have a traditional stainless-steel exterior. Use a dedicated product only when you need polishing or extra help with persistent residue and the product is approved for that finish. A specialty bottle is not a requirement for a clean refrigerator, dishwasher, range hood or other conventional stainless surface.
| Cleaning need | Best starting method | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Dust, fresh fingerprints and light grime | Mild dish soap diluted in warm water and a soft cloth | GE, Whirlpool and Bosch all support mild soap or soapy water for routine care on applicable stainless surfaces. See GE’s cleaning guidance, Whirlpool’s finish guidance and Bosch’s US maintenance instructions. |
| Polishing or fingerprints that remain after washing | An approved stainless-steel spray, cream or appliance cleaner | Optional on compatible traditional stainless. Check the manual and the product label before application. |
| Water spots, oily film or dried food residue | Start with soapy water; escalate to a compatible cleaner if needed | Whirlpool identifies specialty cleaner as an option for fingerprints, oil buildup, water spots and food buildup, while still emphasizing careful drying. |
| Black stainless, smudge-proof or anti-fingerprint steel | Follow the model-specific manual | Do not assume a traditional stainless polish is safe. GE warns against traditional stainless cleaners on its black stainless finish, and Bosch excludes black and anti-fingerprint steel from use of its conditioner. |
| Stainless-look laminate or other coating | Use the finish’s own care directions | Some surfaces only look like steel and have different chemical and abrasion limits. |
Why dish soap works for everyday cleaning
Dish soap is designed to loosen food oils and ordinary kitchen soil. In a small amount of warm water, it provides enough cleaning power for fingerprints, splashes and dust without the polishing agents found in some specialty products. The important variables are the soap’s mildness, the cloth and the technique—not using a large quantity.

GE’s regular-maintenance recommendation is a solution of mild soap (dish soap) and water. Whirlpool describes warm, soapy water and liquid detergent used with a nonabrasive sponge for traditional stainless surfaces. Bosch likewise specifies lukewarm water and mild soap with a soft cloth. These instructions are care guidance, not a laboratory ranking of one product against another, so they support suitability for routine cleaning rather than a measured performance advantage.
Use only enough soap to make a light cleaning solution. A heavily soaped cloth can leave a film that looks like streaking and attracts dust. If your appliance manual specifies a different mixture or says not to use detergent, its instruction takes priority.
When a dedicated stainless-steel cleaner earns its place
A stainless-steel spray or cream can be useful after ordinary washing when the surface still has an oily haze, water spots or fingerprints. Specialty products can also leave a more uniform sheen, which some owners prefer on a large visible panel. They are an optional finishing step, not a substitute for identifying the finish first.
GE names Cerama Bryte Stainless Steel Appliance Cleaner, part PM10X311, as an available product. Its directions say to shake the bottle, put a small amount on a damp cloth or paper towel, clean a small area while following the grain when applicable, then dry and buff with a clean dry towel or soft cloth. The product is intended for compatible surfaces; the appliance manual and the bottle label remain the authority.

Whirlpool’s guidance describes either spray or cream stainless cleaner as an option for fingerprints, oil buildup, water spots and food buildup. That wording does not mean every product is safe on every panel. Avoid getting polish on plastic, painted trim or rubber gaskets; Whirlpool specifically says its stainless polish is not intended for those parts.
Identify the appliance finish before applying anything
Traditional, uncoated stainless steel
This is the finish for which the mild-soap method is generally intended. The grain may appear as fine horizontal or vertical lines. Clean and dry in that direction so you do not drag residue across the texture.
Black stainless steel
Black stainless is not simply traditional steel with a darker color. GE’s black-stainless guidance says to clean that finish with mild dish soap and water and warns against traditional stainless-steel cleaners. Treat a black panel as a coated finish unless your model’s manual explicitly permits a specialty product. Read GE’s black stainless instructions for that manufacturer’s restrictions.

Smudge-proof and anti-fingerprint finishes
These surfaces use a treatment intended to reduce visible marks. Bosch excludes smudge-proof, anti-fingerprint and black steel from use of its stainless conditioner. A product that works on bare stainless can cloud, streak or damage a coating, so use the model-specific maintenance instructions instead of relying on the word “stainless” on a bottle.

Stainless-look laminate or vinyl
Some appliance fronts resemble steel but are a laminate or vinyl surface. GE calls its CleanSteel finish a laminate-vinyl look-alike and provides separate cleaning directions; GE discontinued CleanSteel in its major-appliance line in 2015, but existing units still require the finish-specific guidance. Details are in GE’s CleanSteel information. Do not use a metal polish simply because the color resembles stainless steel.
Safe routine-cleaning method
- Confirm the surface. Check the owner’s manual or model-support page for the finish. Look specifically for “black stainless,” “smudge-proof,” “anti-fingerprint,” “CleanSteel,” laminate or a coating.
- Make a mild solution. Add a small amount of mild dish soap to warm or lukewarm water. Do not increase the concentration to compensate for a neglected surface; use a second gentle pass instead.
- Remove loose grit. Use a soft cloth to lift crumbs and dust before rubbing. Grit trapped in a cloth can make scratches even when the cleaner itself is mild.
- Wipe with the grain. Dampen a microfiber or other soft, nonabrasive cloth, wring it so it is not dripping, and make light strokes in the visible grain direction. Follow the grain on handles and narrow trim as far as the design allows.
- Work in small sections. Overlap passes so soil is removed rather than moved to another panel. Around controls, seams and handles, keep liquid off openings and electrical interfaces.
- Rinse when appropriate. If the manual or product directions call for rinsing, use a separate cloth dampened with clean water. Do not leave a soap film behind.
- Dry immediately. Use a clean, dry, soft cloth and follow the grain again. Complete drying reduces water spots and streaks; GE’s specialty-cleaner directions specifically call for drying and buffing, and Whirlpool emphasizes that the surface should be fully dry.
- Inspect under normal light. If marks remain, identify whether they are grease, mineral spots, baked-on residue or a coating defect before choosing a stronger method.
How to apply a dedicated cleaner safely
- Read the appliance manual first. Whirlpool explicitly advises consulting the manual before choosing a stainless product. Confirm that the finish is traditional stainless and that the cleaner is allowed.
- Test an inconspicuous area. Apply the product exactly as labeled to a hidden edge or lower corner. Stop if the color, gloss or texture changes.
- Protect adjacent materials. Keep spray and cream away from plastic, painted trim, displays, control labels and rubber gaskets. Put product on the cloth rather than spraying near seams.
- Use a small amount. For Cerama Bryte PM10X311, GE directs users to shake the bottle and place a small amount on a damp cloth or paper towel.
- Clean with the grain. Work a small area, following the grain where visible. Avoid circular scrubbing, which can make directional streaks conspicuous.
- Dry and buff. Remove residue with a clean dry towel or soft cloth, following the product directions. Do not leave an oily polish layer on a handle that will be touched frequently.
Match the method to the mark
| Symptom | Low-risk response | Escalation or warning |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh fingerprints | One pass with mild soapy water, followed by complete drying. | If prints persist on compatible traditional stainless, use a small amount of approved cleaner and buff dry. |
| Greasy haze or oil buildup | Repeat the mild-soap wash with a clean cloth and fresh solution. | Whirlpool lists stainless cleaner as an option for oil buildup; verify the finish first. |
| Water spots | Wash gently, then dry completely rather than allowing air-drying. | For stubborn spots, use only a product permitted by the manual. Do not improvise with acidic cleaners where the manufacturer prohibits them. |
| Dried food residue | Soften it with a damp soapy cloth and lift it without scraping. | Abrasive scraping can permanently mark the surface. Repeat gentle soaking instead. |
| Cloudy or streaky appearance after polishing | Remove excess product with a clean, slightly damp cloth if the manual permits, then dry. | On coated or black finishes, stop using traditional polish and consult the model instructions. |
| Orange specks or rust-like marks | Use the appliance maker’s rust-removal guidance. | GE warns that steel wool and steel brushes can leave particles that rust; see GE’s rust-cleaning guidance. |
Products and tools to avoid
Scratches are usually harder to reverse than fingerprints are to remove. Do not use steel wool, steel brushes, abrasive powders, rough scouring pads or scratchy cloths. They can score the finish, and loose steel particles can later create rust-like spots. GE, Whirlpool and Bosch all warn against abrasive tools or cleaners in their stainless-care guidance.
Do not use bleach, ammonia, acids or commercial oven cleaner unless the appliance maker expressly allows the product for that exact surface. GE lists steel wool, abrasives, bleach, ammonia, acids and commercial oven cleaners among products to avoid for its stainless care. Bosch cautions against chlorine-based and abrasive cleaners. Whirlpool’s product-help guidance specifically warns against vinegar-based and citrus-based cleaners for finishes covered by that guidance. A familiar kitchen ingredient is not automatically safe for an appliance coating.

Mixing products can create irritating fumes or leave a reaction film, and it makes it impossible to know which chemical affected the finish. What the major manufacturer guidance says
| Manufacturer guidance | Routine method | Special restrictions or options |
|---|---|---|
| GE Appliances | Mild dish soap and water for regular daily maintenance. | Lists stainless cleaner and wipes; warns against steel wool, abrasives, bleach, ammonia, acids and commercial oven cleaners. |
| Whirlpool appliance care | Warm, soapy water and liquid detergent with a nonabrasive sponge, then a soft or microfiber cloth for drying. | Spray or cream cleaner can address fingerprints, oil, water spots and food buildup. Consult the manual, keep polish off plastic, trim and gaskets, and observe its finish-specific exclusions. |
| Bosch US dishwasher maintenance | Lukewarm water and mild soap with a soft cloth, wiping with the grain. | Avoid abrasive cleaners, chlorine-based cleaners and abrasive sponges. Its conditioner is not for smudge-proof, anti-fingerprint or black steel. |
These recommendations are not interchangeable warranties. A Whirlpool instruction for one finish does not override a Bosch or GE manual for another model. Use the guidance that belongs to your appliance and finish.
Troubleshooting common cleaning mistakes
The panel looks streakier after cleaning
Streaks usually indicate uneven moisture, leftover soap or excess polish rather than a need for a harsher chemical. Recheck the grain direction, use a clean cloth, remove residue with the method permitted by the manual and dry immediately. Work on smaller sections so the solution does not dry before you wipe it.
The cleaner made a dark or cloudy patch
Stop applying the product and compare the patch with an untouched area. On black, anti-fingerprint or laminate surfaces, a traditional stainless product may be incompatible. Do not try to correct the appearance with abrasives. Contact the appliance manufacturer or consult the finish-specific care page before further cleaning.

Some polished surfaces show touch marks quickly, especially around handles. A thin residue layer can also make marks appear worse. Wash with mild soapy water, remove all residue and dry with a clean cloth. If the manual permits a stainless polish, reserve it for the visible panel and keep it away from touch points, seals and trim.

A scratch appeared after cleaning
Do not continue rubbing in an attempt to blend it. Record which cloth and product were used, photograph the mark and check the warranty or manufacturer support instructions. Abrasive damage is mechanical and generally cannot be removed safely with a stronger cleaner.
Rust-colored particles appear after using a scrubber
Steel wool or a steel brush can deposit particles that rust on the surface even when the appliance’s stainless alloy itself is intact. Discontinue the tool and use the manufacturer’s rust-removal procedure; GE’s guidance explains the connection between abrasive steel tools and rust-like spots.
How often should you clean and polish?
Clean spills and fingerprints when they appear, because dried food and salt are harder to remove than fresh soil. A mild-soap wipe is suitable for routine maintenance whenever the finish manual permits it. There is no universal schedule for applying polish. Use it only when the compatible surface needs a more uniform appearance or ordinary washing no longer removes the residue, and remove all excess product so it does not build up.

Keep a separate soft cloth for appliance exteriors rather than reusing one that contains grit from sinks, cookware or countertops. Launder microfiber cloths without fabric softener if its residue transfers to the appliance. Store specialty cleaner upright and follow its label; age, storage conditions and formula vary by product.
What is actually established about “which works best”
Manufacturer pages establish that mild soap and water are acceptable for routine cleaning of many traditional stainless-steel appliances, and that specialty cleaners can be useful for polishing or persistent marks on compatible finishes. They do not provide a controlled head-to-head test proving that dish soap or a dedicated cleaner removes more soil, leaves fewer streaks or protects the metal better in every situation.
That evidence supports a decision based on the job: choose the gentlest approved method that removes the soil, then escalate only when the finish and manual allow it. For most daily appliance cleaning, that means mild dish soap, warm water, a soft cloth, grain-direction wiping and thorough drying.
