Short answer: AI agents will probably use both stablecoins and traditional card networks. Stablecoins fit machine-native micropayments and high-frequency programmatic services; cards fit purchases made through existing merchants, especially proxy or larger transactions. The payment rail settles value, but it does not prove that an agent was authorized to spend it.
The right choice depends on transaction size and frequency, merchant acceptance, identity and delegated authority, settlement requirements, policy controls, auditability, and what happens when an agent makes a mistake. Hybrid designs are already emerging instead of a single universal replacement for cards.

What an AI agent payment actually involves
An agent payment is not just a wallet signing a transfer or a card number being submitted. A production flow has to answer six separate questions:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- What was the agent asked to buy? The request needs a machine-readable description of the item, service, price, merchant and constraints.
- Who authorized the request? The system must connect the agent to a person, organization or software service with authority to spend.
- How much freedom does the agent have? Limits can cover amount, merchant category, time, geography, frequency or approved counterparties.
- Which credential is used? This might be a tokenized card credential, a stablecoin wallet, or another delegated payment token.
- How is the payment settled? A card network, an onchain protocol, a bank or a combination can move the value.
- What happens if the result is wrong? Refunds, disputes, evidence, cancellation and responsibility must be defined before the agent starts operating.
Stablecoins and cards address mainly the fifth question. Agent identity, scope of permission and accountability address the first four and the sixth. Treating a settlement rail as proof of authority is a fundamental design error.

Where stablecoins fit
Machine-native micropayments
Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to maintain a relatively stable value against a reference currency. In agent systems, they can be transferred programmatically without requiring a human to approve every small charge. That makes them useful for pay-per-request APIs, data retrieval, software tools, model inference, bandwidth, compute and other services that may be consumed in tiny increments.
Machine-payment protocols such as x402 and MPP are examples of this direction. They are not identical products or proof that every stablecoin transaction is suitable for agents; they are protocol patterns for requesting, authorizing and settling automated payments.
x402 activity and what the figure means
Visa and Artemis describe x402 as an open protocol for machine-native payments, incubated by Coinbase and Cloudflare and stewarded by the Linux Foundation. Their figures show roughly $15.0 million in adjusted volume across 109.6 million transactions since x402 launched in May 2025, using Artemis Analytics data dated April 21, 2026. The adjusted totals exclude identified wash and test activity. They are therefore not raw transaction totals and not a measure of the entire stablecoin or agent-payment market.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe combination of many transactions and relatively modest adjusted volume illustrates why stablecoins appeal to machine-to-machine commerce: the protocol can represent very small payments that would be uneconomic or operationally awkward to approve manually.
MPP and multiple underlying payment types
MPP, built by Stripe and Tempo with contributions from Visa, is another machine-payment protocol. Visa’s card specification for MPP adds tokenized card credentials to MPP-compatible workflows. MPP therefore demonstrates an important point: a machine-payment protocol can sit above more than one settlement type. An implementation may use an onchain stablecoin for one service and a tokenized card credential for another while keeping a common agent-facing workflow.

What stablecoins do not solve
A stablecoin transfer does not establish that the agent had valid permission, that the seller delivered what was requested, or that a refund path exists. The wallet may be controlled by an agent, but the system still needs identity binding, spending rules, key protection, monitoring and records that explain why each transfer occurred.
Where traditional card networks fit
Existing merchant acceptance
Card networks already connect large numbers of merchants, acquirers, issuers and fraud systems. If an agent needs to buy from a service that accepts cards but does not support a machine-native protocol, a card-based route can work without asking that merchant to adopt a new settlement rail.
This is especially relevant for proxy purchases and larger transactions inside current merchant networks. Visa’s July 2026 analysis describes cards as suitable for those uses, while stablecoins are better suited to machine-native micropayments. The distinction is about fit, not a permanent rule.
Delegated credentials instead of exposed card numbers
Agent-specific controls are being added to card systems. Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol communicates agent intent, consumer recognition and optional payment information through cryptographic signatures. Stripe describes agentic network tokens issued by Visa or Mastercard and provisioned for an authorized agent’s intent, without exposing the underlying card details to that agent.
Visa’s card-based MPP materials also describe tokenization, authentication and agent-identity verification. These mechanisms can limit the blast radius if an agent is compromised, because the agent can receive a scoped token rather than the account’s underlying card number.

Mastercard’s cross-rail direction
On June 10, 2026, Mastercard announced Agent Pay for Machines, describing credentialing, controls, orchestration and settlement for machine-driven payments across card and stablecoin types. The announcement named more than 30 early supporters, including Adyen, Checkout.com, Cloudflare, Coinbase, Stripe and Tempo. It is evidence of a launched initiative and a participant ecosystem, not proof that every named organization has deployed production agent transactions at scale.

| Decision factor | Stablecoin and machine-native rails | Traditional card networks with agent controls |
|---|---|---|
| Typical fit | Very small, frequent, programmatic payments such as API or data calls; x402 is an example. | Proxy purchases and larger transactions within existing merchant networks, as described by Visa. |
| Merchant reach | Requires the merchant or service to support the relevant wallet, chain or protocol. | Uses established card acceptance at participating merchants. |
| Agent credential | Usually a wallet or protocol credential; the cited sources do not establish one universal identity standard. | Tokenized network credentials, cryptographic agent signatures and identity verification are being added through initiatives such as Trusted Agent Protocol and card-based MPP. |
| Payment size and frequency | Designed to represent machine-native micropayments; x402 reported 109.6 million adjusted transactions through April 21, 2026. | Can support ordinary card purchases; the sources do not state a universal frequency limit for agent use. |
| Settlement model | Onchain settlement can be integrated into a machine protocol; timing and operating conditions depend on the selected network and service. | Authorization and settlement run through existing card-network participants; exact agent settlement timing is not stated in the cited material. |
| Policy and audit | Programmable rules and transaction records can be built into the agent and protocol, but implementations differ. | Network tokens, authentication and agent-intent data provide established control points, while the merchant and issuer retain their existing records. |
| Dispute and reversal | A universal chargeback process for high-frequency agent payments is not established in the cited material; refund and reversal terms must be defined by the service. | Chargeback infrastructure exists, but Visa notes that its windows and evidence rules were designed for human-paced commerce rather than chains of high-frequency agent payments. |
| Market maturity | IMF describes current initiatives as emerging design patterns, not settled or standardized architectures. | Card acceptance and fraud infrastructure are established, while agent-specific controls remain under development. |
How to choose a rail for a specific agent task
Choose a machine-native stablecoin flow when
- The service is consumed automatically and repeatedly rather than bought as a single retail order.
- Individual charges are very small and need to be authorized without human interaction.
- The merchant or API already supports the required protocol, wallet and settlement network.
- You can enforce wallet limits, key security, destination allowlists and a clear reconciliation process.
Choose a card-based flow when
- The target merchant already accepts cards but has no stablecoin or agent-protocol integration.
- The purchase is a proxy or larger transaction where card acceptance, issuer controls and existing fraud processes are valuable.
- You need a tokenized credential that hides the underlying card details from the agent.
- The agent’s purchase can be expressed as a bounded intent that a network token or agent-specific signature can represent.
Use a hybrid flow when
- The same agent buys both ordinary retail goods and machine services.
- One merchant accepts cards while another accepts a stablecoin protocol.
- You want one policy engine and audit log while routing each transaction to the rail that matches its amount, acceptance and dispute needs.
- Your architecture follows the direction described by Visa and Mastercard, in which cards and stablecoins settle different parts of agent commerce.
Authorization is the central control problem
Delegated authority means a person or organization allows software to act on its behalf. That delegation should be explicit and constrained. A useful authorization record specifies:
- Principal: the person, company or service account ultimately responsible.
- Agent identity: the software instance, model-backed service or orchestrator acting now.
- Intent: what the agent is allowed to obtain, including merchant, product or service attributes.
- Limits: maximum amount per transaction, day and task; frequency ceilings; currency; geography; and approved destinations.
- Validity: start time, expiry and conditions that revoke authority.
- Evidence: the prompt, policy decision, quote, authentication event, credential used and resulting receipt.
Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol and agentic network-token work show how cryptographic signatures and scoped credentials can carry intent and recognition into a card transaction. Stablecoin implementations need equivalent answers even when the transfer itself is signed by a wallet.
A practical hybrid architecture
The following sequence keeps policy separate from settlement. It can be implemented with a card-based MPP flow, x402, another stablecoin protocol or a combination.
- Capture the request. Record the user’s objective, acceptable merchants, maximum spend, deadline and any restrictions before the agent searches or negotiates.
- Authenticate the principal. Bind the request to an account, organization or delegated service identity. Do not treat a model’s internal text as proof of authorization.
- Issue a scoped credential. Use a tokenized card credential, wallet session or protocol credential limited to the approved intent. Keep underlying card secrets and unrestricted private keys outside the agent’s direct context.
- Evaluate policy before payment. Check amount, destination, category, currency, cumulative spend and expiry. Require a stronger approval step when a threshold or new merchant is encountered.
- Obtain a quote and bind it to intent. Record the exact item, price, taxes, delivery terms and expiration. Prevent a later redirect from silently changing the destination or amount.
- Submit through the matching rail. Route a supported machine micropayment to the stablecoin protocol; route an existing merchant purchase to the card network; or let an orchestration layer choose according to policy.
- Verify the result. Confirm that the settlement response, merchant identity, delivered service and amount match the authorized request. A successful transaction response alone is insufficient.
- Reconcile and retain evidence. Store authorization, agent identity, credential identifier, policy decision, protocol or network response, receipt and delivery result in an append-only audit record.
- Monitor and revoke. Detect unusual frequency, destinations, repeated failures or prompt-injection indicators. Revoke the credential or wallet session immediately when behavior leaves the approved scope.
For a card route, the credential may be a network token with agent-intent data. For an onchain route, the same policy engine can authorize a bounded wallet operation. The settlement mechanism changes; the control plane should not.

Disputes, refunds and mistaken purchases
Agent commerce creates a responsibility question that ordinary checkout flows often avoid: who is liable when the agent follows a malicious instruction, misunderstands the request or buys the wrong thing?
Visa notes that delegated authority complicates responsibility when an agent purchases the wrong product or a malicious prompt redirects spending. It also notes that chargeback windows and evidence requirements were designed for human-speed commerce, not chains of many agent-to-agent payments. A high-volume workflow may generate thousands of individually valid authorizations while still producing an unacceptable outcome.
Before deployment, define separate procedures for:
- Unauthorized action: the agent exceeded its scope or used a stolen credential.
- Authorized but incorrect action: the agent stayed within limits but selected the wrong item or service.
- Non-delivery: the payment settled but the service failed.
- Protocol or routing error: the transaction reached the wrong destination or was duplicated.
- Policy disagreement: the user disputes a decision that the system recorded as authorized.
Card chargebacks may provide an established channel for some merchant disputes, but their fit for rapid agent chains is unresolved. Stablecoin protocols may provide a transaction record without providing a universal reversal process. The contract with the merchant or service must therefore state refund windows, evidence requirements, cancellation rules and the party responsible for errors.
Security and privacy requirements
Agent payment security has to cover more than the payment credential. Visa’s Rubail Birwadker summarized the requirement this way: “for these kinds of payments to scale, security isn’t optional, it has to be built into every layer – from authentication and data privacy to fraud prevention.”
Recommended Free Tools
- Prompt and tool isolation: treat content retrieved from websites, emails or documents as untrusted instructions.
- Credential minimization: expose only a scoped token or session, never unrestricted card data or a wallet key.
- Destination verification: compare the resolved merchant, wallet address or API endpoint with an allowlist and the signed intent.
- Rate controls: cap both value and transaction count so a loop cannot exhaust the account through individually small payments.
- Human escalation: require confirmation for unusual merchants, new currencies, high-value purchases or policy exceptions.
- Privacy boundaries: avoid sending unnecessary personal or purchase data to an agent, merchant or protocol.
- Independent monitoring: alert on changes in behavior rather than relying only on the agent’s own explanation.
What the current market evidence does and does not show
Visa reported an approximately $7 billion annualized stablecoin settlement run rate measured as of March 2026. The same Visa material counted more than 160 stablecoin-linked card programs live or in development globally. That is a combined count of live and in-development programs, not a count of AI-agent payment deployments.
Best Value
Mastercard’s June 2026 Agent Pay for Machines announcement and Visa’s 2025–2026 protocol announcements show active infrastructure development. They do not establish that all participants process production traffic at scale, that one protocol has won broad adoption, or that one rail is cheaper or faster in every geography.
The IMF’s April 2026 Note No. 2026/004 characterizes these initiatives as design patterns rather than settled or standardized architectures. For a buyer or developer, that means integration decisions should include versioning, fallback routes, data portability and an exit plan rather than assuming today’s protocol choices are permanent.
A decision checklist for developers and finance teams
- List the agent’s transactions by amount, frequency, merchant type and required geography.
- Verify which merchants or APIs actually accept cards, stablecoins, x402, MPP or another relevant protocol.
- Define the principal, agent identity, intent, limits, expiry and revocation path.
- Select tokenized card credentials or a bounded wallet session instead of exposing root credentials.
- Specify who approves exceptions and what evidence is retained.
- Write refund, dispute, cancellation and non-delivery terms before enabling autonomous spending.
- Test prompt redirection, duplicate requests, stale quotes, wrong destinations, credential theft and service failure.
- Measure authorization failures, false declines, policy overrides, settlement exceptions and reconciliation time separately for each rail.
- Keep a fallback route where a failed protocol or unsupported merchant would otherwise stop a critical workflow.
Bottom line for the “stablecoin or credit card?” question
Use stablecoins when the payment is genuinely machine-native: small, frequent, programmable and accepted by a compatible service. Use a card-based network when the agent is buying through an established merchant, particularly for proxy or larger purchases where acceptance and existing controls matter. Use a hybrid policy and orchestration layer when the agent needs both.
As Tim Conard, Visa’s Onchain Data Lead, put it: “In all likelihood, this won’t come down to a choice between cards and stablecoins. Both will have a place.” The unresolved work is not simply selecting a rail; it is proving authority, constraining delegated action, preserving an audit trail and assigning responsibility when autonomous commerce goes wrong.
