Stablecoin Remittance Fees vs Western Union, Wise, and Bank Transfers (2026 Guide)

Stablecoins are not automatically the cheapest way to send money internationally. The blockchain transfer can cost only a few cents, yet buying the stablecoin, converting it to local currency and paying it out may make the recipient’s final amount more expensive than a Wise or Western Union transfer. In some corridors, a bank is dramatically costlier; in others, a well-priced bank or wallet route can beat a stablecoin.

Compare the amount the recipient can actually use after every fee, exchange-rate spread and payout charge. The following guide explains the cost structure, current benchmarks and a practical method for comparing a $200 transfer.

The short answer

For a $200 international transfer, there is no universal winner. Stablecoins can be competitive when both people already have verified accounts, the sender can buy the asset cheaply, the recipient can sell it cheaply and a fast local payment rail is available. They often lose that advantage when either side must use a high-priced fiat on-ramp or off-ramp.

Wise normally shows a percentage-based fee and uses the mid-market exchange rate, but its exact quote changes with the currencies, amount and funding method. Western Union prices vary with destination, funding method, payout method, delivery speed and the exchange rate used for the quote. Bank transfers can be the most expensive option: the World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide report for the third quarter of 2025 recorded a 14.99% average cost for banks, compared with a 6.36% global remittance average.

The correct test is:

recipient’s usable local-currency value = amount funded − every sender-side fee − network or intermediary fee − cash-out and payout fee − exchange-rate loss.

What “cheap” means in a remittance

A remittance has several stages. A service may advertise a low transfer fee while recovering its revenue through an exchange-rate margin or a payout charge. Compare each stage in the same currency and at the same time.

Cost or performance item What to check Why it changes the result
Sender funding Bank debit, card payment or cash deposit fee; payment limits Cards and instant funding can cost more than a bank debit.
Asset purchase or on-ramp Price paid for one unit of the stablecoin versus a transparent market rate A percentage spread can exceed the blockchain fee.
Blockchain transfer Network fee, asset and network used, and whether the fee is paid separately The on-chain amount is only one leg of the journey.
Conversion or off-ramp Stablecoin sale fee, spread, withdrawal minimum and local-bank charge This is often the largest stablecoin cost for an occasional user.
Payout Bank account, mobile wallet, debit card or cash pickup fee Different delivery formats can have different prices and speeds.
Foreign-exchange rate Rate compared with the mid-market rate at the time of the quote A “zero-fee” transfer can still be expensive if the rate is marked up.
Time and access When the recipient can spend or withdraw local currency A fast blockchain confirmation does not guarantee fast cash access.

Also check identity verification, transaction limits, reversals, fraud controls and consumer-protection rules. A route that is theoretically cheap but unavailable to the recipient is not a usable remittance.

What the 2026 stablecoin evidence shows

Banca d’Italia mystery shopping

A July 2026 Banca d’Italia mystery-shopping exercise executed 200 USDC transfers across ten corridors connecting Italy with Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and Japan. Total costs ranged from 0.30% to nearly 9% of the amount sent. The on-chain leg was only a marginal share of the total; on-ramp and off-ramp friction accounted for most of the cost and delay.

The study found no systematic cost advantage over traditional channels. That does not mean every stablecoin transfer is expensive. It means the result depends on the specific provider, currency pair, payment rail and recipient cash-out path rather than on the blockchain fee alone.

Speed is determined by the slowest local rail

Where instant-payment systems were available in the tested corridor, end-to-end settlement finished in under 20 minutes. Where a standard bank transfer was needed, the process took one to two business days. A transaction can therefore be confirmed on-chain in seconds while the recipient waits for a bank credit, compliance review or cash-out.

How stablecoin remittance fees are built

On-ramp: buying the stablecoin

The sender may buy USDC or another dollar-linked token with a bank transfer, debit card or cash. The provider can charge a fixed fee, a percentage, a spread in the quoted price or all three. Card funding frequently costs more than a bank debit because the provider pays card-processing fees and takes on additional chargeback risk.

Network transfer

The wallet-to-wallet transaction has a network fee, usually paid in the network’s native token or deducted from the transfer. A low network fee is useful, but it is usually small relative to a percentage charged when buying or selling the stablecoin. Record the exact asset and network; sending a token on an unsupported network can make funds inaccessible.

Off-ramp and foreign exchange

The recipient normally sells the stablecoin through an exchange, wallet or payment service and receives local currency. The service may apply a trading fee, a spread against the mid-market rate, a withdrawal charge and a local-bank fee. If the recipient converts in a peer-to-peer market, the quoted price can include a spread and additional counterparty risk.

Payout and local withdrawal

A bank deposit, mobile-wallet credit, card payout and cash pickup can have different charges and limits. A recipient who cannot legally or practically hold stablecoins must complete this step, so the off-ramp and payout price should be included in the headline comparison.

Wise: transparent rate, variable quote

Wise states that the cost depends on the amount sent, how the sender pays and the exchange rate. Its normal fee is calculated as a percentage, with currency-specific pricing and minimums that matter more on small transfers. Wise says it uses the mid-market exchange rate without marking it up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Same-currency transfers between Wise users can be free in many cases. International or SWIFT routes can add fixed charges, and the funding method can change the displayed price. These are service rules, not a universal price: enter the exact currencies, amount and payment method to obtain the live quote.

What to record from a Wise quote

  • The amount debited from the sender, including any funding surcharge.
  • The displayed exchange rate and the mid-market reference used at that moment.
  • The fee in the sender’s currency and the exact amount the recipient will receive.
  • The estimated delivery date and whether the route is a local transfer or a SWIFT payment.

Western Union: delivery choice changes the price

Western Union’s fee information explains that price and delivery time vary by destination, funding method and payout method. Cash pickup, bank-account delivery, debit-card payout and mobile-wallet delivery can produce different totals. Card funding may cost more because of processing costs.

Do not use a single “Western Union fee” as a benchmark. Run the quote for the exact corridor, amount, funding source, payout format and speed. Compare the recipient’s final local-currency amount, not just the displayed transfer fee, because the exchange rate can materially change the outcome.

Questions to answer in a Western Union quote

  • Is the recipient collecting cash, receiving a bank deposit, getting a mobile-wallet credit or receiving a card payout?
  • Is the displayed price for standard delivery or an expedited option?
  • Does the sender fund by bank account, debit card or another method?
  • What local-currency amount is guaranteed or estimated, and until when is the quote valid?

Bank transfers: useful rail, expensive average

The World Bank reported that the global average remittance cost fell from 6.49% in the first quarter of 2025 to 6.36% in the third quarter. Banks remained the most expensive type of service provider in that dataset, with an average cost of 14.99%.

Those figures are cross-corridor averages, not a quote for every country pair. A domestic-to-domestic transfer through linked accounts may be cheap, while an international wire can include an outgoing fee, correspondent-bank deductions, recipient-bank fees and an exchange-rate markup. Ask the sending bank whether intermediary fees are deducted before the recipient is credited; a “shared” fee arrangement can make the final amount unpredictable.

A $200 comparison example

The following is an arithmetic illustration, not a live quote from any provider. It uses a hypothetical corridor with a mid-market rate of 1 sender-dollar = 100 recipient currency units. The purpose is to show why the recipient’s final amount matters.

Route Illustrative assumptions Total cost on $200 Recipient’s USD-equivalent value Recipient currency units at the stated benchmark
Stablecoin 1.00% on-ramp ($2.00), $0.20 network fee, 1.50% off-ramp on the post-network balance ($2.97), and $1.33 payout charge $6.50 (3.25%) $193.50 19,350
Wise-style illustration 1.20% percentage fee ($2.40), mid-market exchange rate, no additional payout fee $2.40 (1.20%) $197.60 19,760
Western Union-style illustration $3.99 service fee plus a $3.00 exchange-rate effect $6.99 (3.50%) $193.01 19,301
Bank benchmark illustration World Bank Q3 2025 average bank cost of 14.99% $29.98 (14.99%) $170.02 17,002

The Wise and Western Union rows use hypothetical assumptions to demonstrate the calculation; their actual prices are dynamic. The bank row applies a global average to a $200 amount and should not be mistaken for a quote on this corridor. The stablecoin row shows that a $0.20 network fee can coexist with more than $6 in other charges.

How to compare a real transfer, step by step

  1. Fix the scenario. Enter the same send amount, sender country, recipient country, funding date, funding method and delivery format for every service.
  2. Capture the recipient amount. Take a screenshot or record the local-currency amount before confirming. Note the quote’s expiration time.
  3. Separate fees from the exchange rate. Divide the recipient amount by the mid-market value for the same amount. The difference is the combined fee and rate loss.
  4. For a stablecoin route, list every leg. Record the on-ramp price, network fee, wallet withdrawal fee, off-ramp spread, local withdrawal fee and payout charge.
  5. Check the recipient’s ability to cash out. Confirm supported identity documents, local bank or wallet availability, withdrawal limits and whether the recipient can use the chosen stablecoin network.
  6. Compare delivery time. Measure from successful sender payment to usable local currency, not from blockchain broadcast to confirmation.
  7. Repeat at the actual sending time. Wise and Western Union quotes change, and stablecoin spreads can widen during market or liquidity stress.

Which route fits which situation?

Situation Usually worth checking first Reason
Both people already use the same regulated wallet and can cash out locally Stablecoin and Wise quotes side by side Existing accounts can remove onboarding and funding friction.
Recipient needs cash pickup Western Union quote versus a local wallet route Cash pickup availability may outweigh a lower digital-transfer fee.
Recipient has a bank account but no crypto experience Wise and bank-transfer quotes No stablecoin conversion or self-custody step is required.
Urgent transfer to a country with instant domestic payments Stablecoin off-ramp and mobile-wallet options End-to-end completion can be under 20 minutes where the local rail supports it.
Urgent transfer where the final leg is a standard bank transfer Any service showing a confirmed delivery estimate The local bank leg can take one to two business days regardless of blockchain speed.
Small amount near a provider’s minimum fee Whichever quote has the lowest fixed charge A fixed minimum can dominate a percentage fee on $200 or less.

Risks beyond the headline price

Recipient capability

The recipient needs a verified account, a supported local bank or wallet and a safe way to convert the asset. If the person must use an unfamiliar peer-to-peer market, the practical cost includes learning time and fraud exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network and address errors

Stablecoins on different networks are not interchangeable at every service. Confirm the network name and deposit address before sending a test amount. A mistaken network or address may not be reversible.

Compliance holds and limits

Identity checks, transaction limits and source-of-funds reviews can delay a transfer or block cash-out. Traditional remittance services also perform compliance checks, but the timing and documentation requirements differ by provider and country.

Consumer protection and reversals

A bank or remittance transaction may have a defined complaints and reversal process. A blockchain transaction is generally final once confirmed. Read the service’s dispute policy and keep the transaction receipt, wallet address and conversion confirmation.

Western Union’s announced USDPT initiative

Western Union announced USDPT, a U.S.-dollar payment stablecoin on Solana, as part of a planned 2026 digital-infrastructure rollout. The announcement is an initiative, not proof that the asset is available for every customer or corridor. Verify live availability, supported countries, conversion costs and payout methods before treating it as a comparison option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical checklist before sending

  • Write down the exact amount the recipient must receive in local currency.
  • Obtain simultaneous quotes from at least one stablecoin route, Wise, Western Union and the available bank route.
  • Include on-ramp, network, off-ramp, FX and payout costs.
  • Use the same mid-market reference when evaluating exchange-rate loss.
  • Confirm delivery format, estimated time, limits and identity requirements.
  • Ask who pays correspondent-bank charges on a wire.
  • For stablecoins, verify the asset, network, deposit address and recipient cash-out path.
  • Save the quote and receipt; dynamic prices can change before funding completes.

Bottom line

Stablecoins are a payment rail, not a guaranteed discount. The Banca d’Italia’s 2026 tests found total costs from 0.30% to nearly 9% and no systematic advantage over traditional services because on- and off-ramp costs dominated the blockchain leg. Wise can be attractive when its mid-market pricing and percentage fee produce a strong live quote. Western Union can be the practical choice when cash pickup or a specific wallet is essential. Banks deserve careful scrutiny because their Q3 2025 global average cost was 14.99%.

For every $200 transfer, choose the route that leaves the recipient with the most usable local currency in the required time—not the route with the lowest advertised gas or service fee.
