What Stable Audio permits for videos and games
Stability AI’s Stable Audio Commercial & Usage Licensing guide explicitly allows generated music and sound effects to be used as background or other embedded audio in video games, mobile and web apps, and monetized videos on platforms such as YouTube and Twitch. It says this applies to hosted Stable Audio generations across its Free, Solo, Creator, Pro, Studio and Max plans, as well as pay-as-you-go API access.

In practical terms, a creator can use a hosted Stable Audio track in a monetized video, while a game developer can incorporate generated music or sound effects into a game. The guide describes Stability AI’s permission to use the output; the other terms and rights obligations still matter.

Yes. The licensing guide says tracks generated on the Free plan can be used commercially, subject to the applicable Terms and AUP. It also says a track made while on Free retains that commercial-use status after an account upgrades; an upgrade is not required just to commercialize that earlier track.

Hosted Stable Audio and self-hosted models have different rules
The hosted service and downloadable model weights are not interchangeable licensing cases. For hosted generations, follow the Stable Audio usage guide and service terms. For self-hosting, check the license for the exact model and version you run; the subscription guidance does not automatically apply to model weights.

Self-hosting: verify the precise model license
Stability AI’s Core Models page lists Stable Audio Open 1.0 and Stable Audio 3.0 Small and Medium under its Core Models framework. The licensing guide identifies Stable Audio 3.0 Small and Medium as covered by the Community License framework and says qualifying commercial users must register and meet its conditions. Models not on the Core Models list are not automatically covered; check their individual licenses.

For self-hosted Stable Audio 3.0 Small and Medium, the guide says a user or its affiliates exceeding $1 million in annual revenue, individually or in aggregate, must request a separate Stability AI license rather than rely on the Community License. That threshold is specific to this self-hosted licensing guidance; it is not stated as a limit on hosted subscription or API commercial use. Confirm the current license text and how the threshold applies to your organization before deployment.

These product details do not determine licensing rights. Check the license for the particular model you plan to run rather than assuming permission transfers between versions or sizes.

What commercial permission does not guarantee
The Stability AI licensing guide makes users responsible for ensuring their use does not violate anyone else’s rights. Its Acceptable Use Policy, effective September 30, 2026, prohibits using Stability Technology to facilitate violations of law or others’ rights, including intellectual-property and privacy rights. The Terms of Service, effective September 30, 2026, also require compliance with the Terms, the AUP, applicable supplemental terms or guidelines, and documentation.

- No established guarantee of exclusivity or copyrightability: The cited official licensing materials do not establish that every output is exclusive or copyrightable, or that it is cleared for every territory and platform.
- Contract protections require a contract: The guide directs users who need contractual indemnification or negotiated protections to ask Stability AI about an Enterprise agreement. Do not assume protections that are not in an agreement you have reviewed and signed.
A practical check before publishing or shipping
- Identify how the audio was generated. If you used Stability AI’s hosted service or API, consult the current Stable Audio guide and service terms. If you ran weights yourself, identify the exact model and version.
- For hosted audio, confirm your use follows the terms. Check the current Terms, AUP and any applicable supplemental requirements for the intended video, game, app or software distribution.
- For self-hosted audio, read that model’s license. Confirm its Core Model status if relevant, then check registration, revenue and other conditions before commercial deployment.
- Review rights in the specific project. Stability AI’s permission does not replace your responsibility to avoid infringing intellectual-property, privacy or other rights.
- Seek negotiated protections if your business needs them. Ask Stability AI about Enterprise terms and review the actual agreement rather than relying on the hosted-use guide alone.
