St. Cloud Financial Credit Union (SCFCU), led by CEO Jed Meyer, is pursuing a way to bring Bitcoin custody and digital-asset records into credit union infrastructure. Bitcoin Magazine reported on October 6, 2026, that SCFCU had more than 20 BTC under custody in a patent-pending hybrid model with individual member ownership in multisignature vaults. That description is an interview-page report, not an independent custody audit. The available sources do not establish that SCFCU is the first credit union to do this, explain what the “$350M” in the headline refers to, or show that Bitcoin itself resides on the credit union’s core ledger.
What did Jed Meyer and St. Cloud Financial Credit Union announce?
The central development is an institutional effort to integrate digital assets with credit union services and core infrastructure. In its October 6, 2026 interview page, Bitcoin Magazine describes SCFCU as custodying real Bitcoin for members through a patent-pending hybrid custody model. It says individual members own Bitcoin held in multisignature vaults and reports more than 20 BTC under custody. Those details are attributable to the publisher’s account; the accessible page does not provide an audit, full custody specification, or a precise balance measurement date beyond its publication.

The interview page’s title calls SCFCU “the first credit union” to put Bitcoin on a core ledger. The cited material does not independently verify that superlative across credit unions, jurisdictions, or different definitions of custody and core-system integration. It also does not explain the “$350M” figure in the title, so it should not be treated as a stated asset figure, valuation, or Bitcoin balance.

Bitcoin Magazine’s description says SCFCU uses multisignature vaults and a hybrid custody model, but does not spell out the operating design. Multisignature generally means that multiple keys or approvals are required for a transaction; that broad meaning alone does not reveal who controls the keys or how this particular service works.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
SCFCU had described an earlier infrastructure effort in a 2024 article. On August 27 of that year, Meyer wrote that SCFCU had partnered with DaLand LLC on its CU-Digital Asset Vault. He framed education, collaboration, and long-range planning as parts of the initiative, and wrote: “A strong, comprehensive strategy—starting with the end in mind and working backward—is essential when partnering with fintech’s.” The quotation, including its published wording, is from Meyer’s first-person article for SCFCU; it presents his perspective, not an independent assessment of the service.
Neither the 2024 article nor the 2026 interview summary establishes the custody details a member would need to assess the arrangement, including key holders, approval thresholds, recovery procedures, legal ownership structure, insurance, or transaction settlement.

Does “on the core ledger” mean Bitcoin is on the blockchain?
Not necessarily. A credit union’s core system can record account balances, member positions, or transaction entries. Bitcoin’s blockchain is a separate network ledger. Connecting the two could mean that the core system tracks a member’s Bitcoin-related position or activity; it does not, by itself, mean the core software holds Bitcoin or writes transactions directly to the blockchain.

How has SCFCU’s digital-asset work developed?
| Date | What the cited source says | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| August 27, 2024 | Meyer wrote that SCFCU partnered with DaLand LLC on its CU-Digital Asset Vault and described a multi-year strategy. | A dated statement by the CEO about the partnership and its intended direction; not a technical description of custody. |
| October 27, 2025 | America’s Credit Unions described SCFCU as working to release a credit union-issued stablecoin and said Meyer had been president and CEO since 2014. It also reported more than 350 percent organic growth without specifying a period or methodology. | A historical account of work underway at that time. It does not establish that a stablecoin was released or is currently available. |
| September 7, 2026 | CUbroadcast described SCFCU, Canvas, and Blaze working with DaLand CUSO and Circuit on digital-wealth infrastructure inside the core. | A publisher’s description of a multi-credit-union initiative; vendor responsibilities and implementation details are not stated. |
| October 6, 2026 | Bitcoin Magazine described SCFCU’s hybrid custody model and reported more than 20 BTC under custody. | A publisher-reported custody figure and model description, not an independent audit or full technical specification. |
The 2025 growth figure and Meyer’s CEO tenure are reported by America’s Credit Unions. The association’s page does not define the growth period or calculation method, so the percentage cannot be used as a directly comparable performance metric.
Is SCFCU offering Bitcoin custody to members now?
Bitcoin Magazine’s October 2026 page reports that SCFCU is custodying Bitcoin for members, but the accessible sources do not provide member-facing terms or confirm who can enroll, whether the service is generally available, what it costs, or how buying and selling work. A reader should not infer availability or eligibility from the interview summary alone. SCFCU also published a March 11, 2026 announcement about preparing for digital assets through member trust; it is useful as context on the credit union’s stated approach, not as a substitute for current product terms. The announcement is available at SCFCU’s digital-asset preparation page.

How is direct Bitcoin custody different from a Bitcoin ETF?
The interview’s chapter list signals a discussion of ETFs versus direct custody, but its accessible summary does not provide a full comparison or recommendation. The basic distinction is the form of exposure: direct custody involves Bitcoin held for the customer, while an ETF is an investment product that provides exposure through fund shares rather than the customer holding Bitcoin in a personal wallet. That distinction does not settle the relative fees, risks, tax treatment, legal rights, or suitability of either option.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For SCFCU’s reported model, the crucial unanswered questions are how member ownership is documented, who controls the keys, how the credit union’s records relate to actual Bitcoin holdings, and how transactions settle. The interview’s chapter labels also mention buy/sell access, Minnesota custody law, NCUA examinations, the CLARITY Act, Lightning plans, Cloud Dollar, and cooperative ownership. A chapter label shows that a subject was discussed; it is not proof of regulatory approval, a settled legal interpretation, a launched feature, or an available product.

What would members need to know to evaluate the service?
- Availability: who may enroll, in which locations, and whether the service is live or still being developed.
- Ownership and custody: how legal ownership is defined, who controls each key, how multisignature approvals work, and what recovery process applies if a key is lost or unavailable.
- Transactions: how a member buys or sells, when Bitcoin moves, how settlement works, and what fees or limits apply.
- Records: whether the core records member positions, transactions, or both, and how those records are reconciled with Bitcoin held in custody.
- Protections and oversight: what insurance, compliance arrangements, and regulatory treatment apply. The sources cited here do not establish a particular approval or protection.
Until those details are available in member-facing documentation, the public record supports a narrower conclusion: SCFCU is pursuing Bitcoin custody and core-system integration, and publishers have described member-owned Bitcoin in multisignature vaults. It does not support a complete technical, legal, or consumer comparison.
