SSRIs and SNRIs are both antidepressant classes that influence serotonin signaling. SSRIs primarily affect serotonin reuptake; SNRIs affect serotonin reuptake and noradrenaline. Neither class is universally safer or better tolerated. The useful comparison depends on the exact medicine, your previous response, health conditions, and every prescription, over-the-counter medicine, and supplement you take.
Common effects overlap, while some cautions differ. The NHS notes that SNRIs such as venlafaxine and duloxetine can raise blood pressure. Interaction risk is medicine-specific, and switching or stopping requires a prescriber-guided plan rather than a self-directed change.

What is the difference between an SSRI and an SNRI?
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) reduce the reuptake of serotonin, increasing its signaling between nerve cells. Serotonin–noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) affect serotonin reuptake and noradrenaline reuptake. The labels describe a medication class, not a guarantee about how any individual will feel.
| Class | Primary signaling targets | Examples named by the NHS | Comparison point |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSRIs | Serotonin | Sertraline, citalopram, escitalopram, fluoxetine, paroxetine | Common effects include nausea, headache, dry mouth, tiredness, sleep problems, and sexual problems; the exact pattern varies by medicine and person. |
| SNRIs | Serotonin and noradrenaline | Duloxetine, venlafaxine | The NHS identifies a possible rise in blood pressure for this class. Venlafaxine has its own listed effects and interaction cautions. |
The NHS summarizes the evidence this way: “The different types of antidepressant work about as well as each other. But side effects vary between different treatments and people.” That statement is a reason to compare individual medicines and personal circumstances, not to select a class on reputation alone.

Which side effects are common?
Side effects are not a complete description of a medicine’s benefits or risks. They may be mild, troublesome, or absent, and several can occur at the same time. NHS guidance says many antidepressant side effects ease after a couple of weeks, although some may persist. Do not assume that a symptom will follow the same course if you change to another medicine.
Effects that can occur with SSRIs
NHS information lists nausea, headache, dry mouth, tiredness, sleep problems, and sexual problems among SSRI effects. “Sleep problems” can mean difficulty sleeping or a change in sleep quality; the source does not establish one pattern for every SSRI. Sexual problems also vary in type and persistence between medicines and people.
Effects listed for venlafaxine
The NHS lists nausea, dizziness or drowsiness, dry mouth, bowel changes, sexual problems, insomnia, and weight changes as common effects associated with venlafaxine. Venlafaxine is an SNRI, but these details should not be automatically assigned to every SNRI or treated as a prediction for a particular patient.

Why the same symptom does not settle the comparison
Nausea, sleep changes, dry mouth, tiredness or dizziness can occur with more than one medicine. A symptom may also come from another medicine, an underlying condition, dehydration, an infection, or a change in routine. A prescriber or pharmacist can help determine whether timing and dose changes fit a medication effect. Keep a dated record of when a symptom began, how severe it is, and what else changed; that information is more useful than a general statement that one class is “stronger.”
At-a-glance comparison: SSRIs versus SNRIs
| Question | What can be said generally | What still needs individual review |
|---|---|---|
| What do they target? | SSRIs primarily affect serotonin; SNRIs affect serotonin and noradrenaline. | The exact medicine, dose, formulation and response. |
| Which effects overlap? | Nausea, sleep changes, dry mouth, tiredness, dizziness and sexual problems may occur. | Which effect appears, how severe it becomes and whether it eases. |
| Is blood pressure a concern? | The NHS says SNRIs can raise blood pressure. | Your baseline readings, other medicines and the monitoring plan. |
| Can they interact with other medicines? | Yes. Serotonergic combinations and medicine-specific risks require checking. | The complete prescription, over-the-counter and supplement list. |
| Can you switch directly? | Not without a plan. | Whether the medicines overlap, require separation or are tapered in sequence. |
This table is a starting point, not a way to choose a medicine without clinical advice. A class comparison cannot account for every formulation, dose, condition or combination.
Blood pressure: the main class-level SNRI caution
The NHS says SNRIs can raise blood pressure. This is a class-level caution, not an incidence figure and not a claim that every person taking an SNRI will have a rise. The NHS source does not establish an equivalent class-wide warning for SSRIs.
Tell the prescriber if you have hypertension, cardiovascular disease, previous unusual blood-pressure readings, or medicines that already affect blood pressure. Ask whether blood-pressure monitoring is appropriate for the specific SNRI and dose. Do not stop an antidepressant solely because you read that blood pressure can change; discuss the finding and the next step with a clinician.

If you already monitor at home, bring a record showing dates, readings and when doses were taken. One reading may not explain a trend, and changing the dose on your own can make the situation harder to assess. A pharmacist can also check whether another product on your list affects blood pressure or overlaps with the proposed antidepressant.
How medication interactions differ
There is no reliable interaction answer based only on “SSRI” or “SNRI.” The Specialist Pharmacy Service (SPS) emphasizes that risk depends on the medicines involved and the person’s other medicines. A complete review includes prescriptions, non-prescription pain medicines, cold and allergy products, vitamins, herbal products, recreational substances, and medicines taken only occasionally.
Serotonergic combinations and serotonin syndrome
Combining medicines that increase serotonin can raise the risk of serotonin syndrome. Sources identify possible contributors including certain pain medicines, antiemetics, lithium, other antidepressants during a switch, triptans, and St John’s wort. These are examples, not a complete interaction list. The risk depends on the exact agents, doses, timing, and individual factors.
The National Institute of Mental Health describes serotonin syndrome as rare but potentially life-threatening. Symptoms it lists include agitation, muscle twitches, hallucinations, high temperature, and unusual blood-pressure changes. NHS venlafaxine guidance also mentions a fast heartbeat, sweating, shaking, twitching muscles, and confusion or agitation. This is not a complete symptom checklist. Seek urgent medical help if you suspect a serious reaction, and tell clinicians what you took and when.
Risk is especially important to review after a new medicine is added, a dose is increased, or one antidepressant is changed for another. Do not assume that a product sold without a prescription is automatically compatible. Bring the package, ingredient list or a clear photograph if you are unsure of a product’s contents.
Venlafaxine, anticoagulants, and NSAIDs
NHS venlafaxine guidance identifies anticoagulants such as warfarin and apixaban and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen as medicines that may not mix well with venlafaxine. That warning calls for a medication review; it is not a blanket instruction to stop an anticoagulant, aspirin, ibuprofen, or venlafaxine. Stopping any of these without advice can create its own danger.
Tell every clinician involved in your care if venlafaxine is being considered or prescribed. Include medicines started by a dentist, urgent-care clinic or specialist, because an interaction check is only as complete as the list being reviewed. The same principle applies when an SSRI is involved: the exact drug and combination determine the practical advice.

Why switching itself can create interaction risk
Starting one antidepressant while the previous medicine is still active can produce additive effects or serotonin toxicity, depending on the pair and the switching method. SPS guidance therefore treats switching as a plan based on the exact agents rather than a generic SSRI-to-SNRI or SNRI-to-SSRI formula. A prescriber or pharmacist should specify whether medicines overlap, are separated by a washout period, or are reduced in another sequence.
Stopping or changing treatment safely
Do not stop an SSRI or SNRI abruptly and do not use someone else’s tapering schedule. NHS advice is to discuss discontinuation with a doctor and reduce the dose gradually. The pace and dose steps depend on the medicine, the dose you take, how long you have taken it, previous withdrawal symptoms, and what treatment—if any—comes next.
Medicines with greater withdrawal likelihood
SPS identifies paroxetine and venlafaxine as examples with shorter half-lives that are associated with a greater likelihood of withdrawal symptoms. This does not mean withdrawal is inevitable, nor does it make another medicine automatically preferable. It means a planned reduction and follow-up are particularly important when either medicine is being stopped or changed.
What a prescriber needs before planning a switch
- The exact name, formulation, and current dose of each medicine.
- When you take each dose and whether any doses have been missed.
- Previous antidepressants, the response to each, and any past withdrawal or class-related side effects.
- All prescriptions, over-the-counter products, supplements, and occasional medicines.
- Relevant conditions, including blood-pressure problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding status when applicable, seizure history, liver or kidney concerns, and other conditions your clinician has identified.
- Your priorities, such as reducing a particular side effect, preserving sleep, or avoiding a known interaction.
These details allow the clinician to weigh interaction risk and discontinuation risk together instead of treating the switch as a simple substitution.

1. What happened with previous treatment?
SPS advises considering previous response and past class-related side effects. A medicine that helped before, or one that caused a clearly documented problem, provides more useful information than a generic claim that all SSRIs or all SNRIs behave alike. Bring the name, dose, duration, benefit, and unwanted effects for each previous trial if you have them.
2. Which health factors change the balance?
Comorbidities, age, and individual needs are part of the SPS assessment. Blood-pressure history deserves explicit discussion when an SNRI is being considered because of the NHS class-level caution. Other conditions and treatments may alter the interaction review even when the antidepressant itself has not changed.

3. Which side effect matters most to you?
Instead of asking which class has fewer side effects overall, identify the effect that would make treatment unacceptable—for example, persistent sleep disruption, sexual problems, dizziness, bowel changes, or nausea. Ask what is known about that effect for the specific medicine under consideration and what monitoring or alternatives exist.
4. What is the complete interaction picture?
Give one clinician or pharmacist the full list rather than asking separate questions about isolated products. Mention supplements such as St John’s wort and triptans or pain medicines even if you take them only occasionally. Ask specifically whether a proposed combination, dose increase, or switch could increase serotonin-related risk or create another medicine-specific problem.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to prepare for an interaction check
- Make one current list. Include generic and brand names if known, strength, dose, timing, reason for use, and the date each medicine was started.
- Add non-prescription products. Include aspirin, ibuprofen, cold remedies, antiemetics, migraine treatments, vitamins, herbal products, and occasional medicines.
- Mark recent or planned changes. Note medicines you stopped, missed, restarted, or expect to start. Timing can determine whether a combination is risky.
- Show the list to a pharmacist or prescriber. Ask for an interaction check based on the exact products, not just the class name.
- Keep the updated plan. Record the agreed taper, switch dates, monitoring instructions, and the number to call if symptoms occur.
Online interaction checkers can miss context, duplicate ingredients, or supplements. Use them, if at all, as a prompt to ask a professional rather than as permission to combine or stop medicines.
Common comparison mistakes
- Assuming an entire class behaves like one medicine. Venlafaxine’s listed effects and cautions cannot automatically be assigned to every SNRI, just as one SSRI experience does not predict all SSRIs.
- Equating “common” with “inevitable.” A listed effect may not occur, may be temporary, or may persist; only your clinician can help interpret your experience.
- Ignoring timing. A medicine started weeks later, an occasional pain reliever or a missed dose can change the interaction picture.
- Stopping a companion medicine first. Anticoagulants, aspirin and other medicines may be treating an important condition. Review the combination instead of removing one product independently.
- Using a taper found online. Withdrawal likelihood and switching risks differ by agent, dose and sequence.
When to seek urgent help
Contact emergency or urgent medical services for suspected severe reactions, particularly rapidly developing agitation or confusion, hallucinations, high temperature, marked sweating or shaking, muscle twitching, a fast heartbeat, or unusual blood-pressure changes after starting, increasing, combining, or switching serotonergic medicines. Tell the service which medicines and supplements you used and the time of the last doses.
For non-urgent but troubling effects—such as persistent nausea, sleep problems, sexual problems, dizziness, bowel changes, or a blood-pressure reading that concerns you—contact the prescriber or pharmacist. Do not compensate by doubling a missed dose, adding a supplement, or stopping treatment without instructions.

- Could it affect my blood pressure or interact with anything on my list?
- Which side effects should I watch for, and how long might common effects take to ease?

Bottom line
SSRIs mainly target serotonin reuptake; SNRIs target serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake. Their side effects overlap, but individual medicines differ, and the NHS identifies a possible blood-pressure rise with SNRIs. Interaction checking must use your complete medication and supplement list, with special attention to serotonergic combinations and venlafaxine’s listed anticoagulant and NSAID cautions. A prescriber or pharmacist should guide every start, stop, dose change, and switch.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the main difference between an SSRI and an SNRI?
SSRIs primarily affect serotonin reuptake. SNRIs affect serotonin reuptake and noradrenaline reuptake. The exact effects and risks depend on the individual medicine and person.
Do SSRIs or SNRIs have fewer side effects?
Neither class is universally better tolerated. Nausea, sleep changes, dry mouth, tiredness, dizziness and sexual problems can overlap, while the pattern varies by medicine and individual.
Can an SNRI raise blood pressure?
The NHS says SNRIs can raise blood pressure. This is a class-level caution, not a statement that everyone will experience a rise. Ask whether monitoring is appropriate for your medicine and dose.

They can. Certain pain medicines, antiemetics, lithium, other antidepressants, triptans and St John’s wort may contribute to serotonergic risk. Venlafaxine guidance also flags anticoagulants and NSAIDs for review.
Is serotonin syndrome common?
The National Institute of Mental Health describes serotonin syndrome as rare but potentially life-threatening. Seek urgent help for a suspected serious reaction after starting, increasing, combining or switching serotonergic medicines.
Can I switch directly from an SSRI to an SNRI?
Do not switch on your own. The plan depends on the exact agents and may involve overlap, separation or a taper. A prescriber or pharmacist should provide the schedule.
Which medicines are more likely to cause withdrawal when stopped?
SPS identifies paroxetine and venlafaxine as shorter-half-life examples associated with a greater likelihood of withdrawal symptoms. Gradual, supervised reduction is recommended.
