Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

An HDD still makes sense for bulk storage and less-played titles. Neither drive type guarantees higher FPS, and the size of any improvement depends on the game, hardware, and workload.
SSD vs. HDD for PC games: what changes?
An SSD reads game data faster than a mechanical hard drive, so the clearest difference is usually how long you wait for a game to start, load a level, or retrieve assets. Microsoft recommends using an SSD for Windows and games and reserving an HDD for bulk storage in its Windows 11 gaming PC guidance.

The difference is not identical in every title. PCWorld reported that, in its 2025 comparison and tested setup, Marvel Rivals took over seven times longer to load from an HDD, while Cyberpunk 2077 took almost a minute longer on HDD than SSD. Those are examples from particular tests, not estimates for every PC or game. There is no established universal SSD-versus-HDD load-time ratio.
Do games load faster on an SSD?
Often, yes—but the result depends on the game and how it accesses data, along with the rest of the PC and the test conditions. Storage can be especially noticeable when a game is loading levels or assets. Steam’s hardware performance guidance notes that delays in disk responses during gameplay can cause pauses. A faster drive can help when storage access is the source of the wait; it cannot remove delays caused by other system limits or the game itself.

Does an SSD increase FPS?
Do not buy an SSD expecting a general increase in frame rate. Faster storage primarily improves loading and data access, not the graphics work that determines how many frames the PC can render. Steam’s software performance guidance describes FPS as affected by multiple system resources and configurations. A storage-related pause may be reduced in an affected game, but that is not the same as a guaranteed or across-the-board FPS boost.
SSD or HDD: which should hold each part of your setup?
| Use | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Windows and regularly played games | SSD | Microsoft recommends an SSD for Windows and games; quicker access can reduce loading waits. |
| Less frequently played games and large files | HDD, if capacity is the priority | Microsoft identifies HDDs as suitable for bulk storage, where slower access is acceptable. |
A mixed setup is a practical compromise: keep Windows and active games on an SSD, then use an HDD for files or titles you do not need to access quickly. If the PC has only one drive, prioritize the SSD for the operating system and the games you play most.

Should you choose SATA or NVMe?
Both SATA and NVMe SSDs are possible options, but the right one depends on what the PC supports. Before buying, check the motherboard and case for a compatible interface, drive bay or M.2 slot, the required form factor, and available space. An M.2 slot does not by itself establish which drive interfaces the PC supports. The available evidence does not establish one universally suitable SSD, capacity, or price for every gaming PC.

Microsoft describes DirectStorage as a feature intended to let games use high-speed storage such as NVMe SSDs with high throughput and minimal CPU overhead. Its purpose is to improve how supported game workloads read data; an NVMe drive alone does not guarantee a dramatic improvement in every game.

UL’s 3DMark Storage Benchmark description explains that DirectStorage can reduce overhead when loading game data. It also characterizes its feature test as a near-best-case scenario, with variables such as asset management and other GPU work removed. A synthetic feature test therefore should not be treated as a prediction of typical gameplay, and the presence of DirectStorage support in the technology stack does not mean every game benefits in the same way.
Quick Recap
Upgrade priorities for a gaming PC
- Move Windows and active games off an HDD if you can. A compatible SSD is the priority when storage-related waits are the concern.
- Check compatibility before choosing a drive. Confirm the supported interface, form factor, slots or bays, and available capacity in your PC.
- Keep an HDD where capacity matters more than access speed. It remains useful for bulk files and games you rarely play.
- Set expectations around loading, not FPS. An SSD can shorten waits or help with disk-related interruptions in affected workloads, but it is not a general frame-rate upgrade.
- Treat DirectStorage as game- and workload-dependent. A fast SSD can provide the right foundation, but it does not force every title to use the feature or produce the same result.
