Use WebVTT for an HTML video text track, SRT for a basic subtitle file when the receiving software accepts it, and ASS when you need carefully styled, positioned, or animated subtitles and the playback chain supports those features. Before delivery, check the actual platform, editor, container, and player: a file extension alone does not guarantee that its formatting will survive.
Quick choice: SRT, WebVTT, or ASS?

Use the least expressive format that meets the delivery requirement. A simple subtitle does not benefit from complex styling, while detailed typesetting can be lost when converted to a format that cannot represent it.
What each format contains
SRT: a simple sequence of timed text
A conventional SRT cue contains a sequence number, a start and end time, subtitle text, and a blank line before the next cue. Its familiar time form uses a comma before milliseconds, for example 00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:03,500. SRT is plain text and easy to inspect. However, it has no official specification, and players differ in how they handle optional HTML-like or ASS-style formatting. Treat such markup as destination-dependent rather than portable styling. WebVTT: a format designed for web text tracks
The W3C defines WebVTT for external text-track resources associated with HTML’s track element, including subtitles and captions; it also describes chapters and time-aligned metadata. A WebVTT file begins with WEBVTT, is UTF-8, and uses the text/vtt MIME type. Its features include timed cues, optional identifiers and settings, regions, and styling mechanisms. ASS: a script for detailed subtitle presentation
ASS (Advanced SubStation Alpha) uses a sectioned script structure with metadata, style definitions, and dialogue events. Its documented controls include formatting, precise positioning, layers, animation, drawing, transparency, and visual effects. These controls make it useful for signs, karaoke timing, or other carefully composed subtitles, but only when the player or rendering pipeline honors the features used. Choose by delivery scenario
For subtitles on an HTML video
Start with WebVTT because it is specified for external HTML text tracks. Follow the publishing platform’s upload instructions and confirm that the track is connected and displayed correctly in the intended player. A web-focused format is not a guarantee that every non-web device will handle all its features.

For a basic subtitle-file handoff
Choose SRT if the receiving application requests or accepts it and you do not need advanced presentation. Check the destination’s encoding expectations and verify how it treats any markup. If the receiver requires a different format, use that requirement rather than assuming SRT will work everywhere.
For styled or positioned subtitles
Choose ASS when placement, multiple styles, layers, or effects are important, and the playback chain supports them. Validate the rendered result in the actual target player or render pipeline; the format’s capabilities alone do not establish that a particular implementation will display them.

When converting an existing subtitle
- Keep an untouched copy of the original file so you can recover its cues and formatting.
- Convert to the format required by the destination. Do not assume the extension change alone performs a valid conversion.
- Inspect the converted file for cue timing, text, line breaks, and any styling that matters.
- Play it in the target workflow and check synchronization and rendering. Conversion may preserve text and timing while dropping or changing presentation features that the destination format cannot represent.
Check the whole compatibility chain
Compatibility belongs to the workflow, not just the file extension. Confirm the requirements of the service where you upload, the editor or converter you use, the media container if relevant, and the playback device. Subtitle Edit’s documentation lists support for SRT, WebVTT, and ASS in that software; that does not prove that another editor, service, or player supports them in the same way. Its supported formats page is useful for checking that application specifically.
- Does the destination accept this format, or does it require a particular one?
- Will the target preserve the styling or cue settings you authored?
- Have you checked timing and appearance in the actual playback environment?
Subtitle format is not the same as accessibility quality
A file extension does not guarantee accurate captions or suitable accessibility content. The choice between SRT, WebVTT, and ASS is about file structure, presentation features, and delivery compatibility; the subtitle or caption content still needs to be accurate and appropriate for its audience.
