If your YouTube live stream drops at night, the time pattern is a clue—not proof that your Indian broadband provider is congested or throttling you. First find out which connection fails: your encoder to SRS, SRS to YouTube, or YouTube’s ingest/stream-health checks. Compare logs and network measurements from a failure with a stable period before changing settings or buying equipment.
First identify where the stream is failing
A stream that passes through SRS has two network legs to check separately: the encoder publishes to SRS, then SRS forwards the stream to YouTube. SRS documents both roles: accepting an RTMP publish and forwarding it to another RTMP server (SRS RTMP documentation; SRS forwarding documentation). If your encoder publishes directly to YouTube, skip the SRS checks and focus on the encoder-to-YouTube connection and YouTube stream health.

- Encoder-to-SRS drops: examine the encoder’s publish log and the connection from your source network to the SRS host.
- SRS-to-YouTube drops: if the encoder remains connected to SRS, investigate SRS’s outbound connection, forwarding configuration and host.
- YouTube reports a stream-health problem: use the exact warning to check bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, codec or incoming video rather than treating every warning as a broadband failure.
Capture evidence during a failure
Record a failure window and a comparison window
Write down the failure’s exact time in UTC, how long it lasts, whether the stream recovers, and the exact message shown in YouTube Studio’s stream health. Save the encoder and SRS logs around that time. Then collect the same information during a stable period—ideally at a similar time of day if the stream is still running.
Look for which connection closes first, whether a reconnect is attempted, and whether it succeeds. A timestamped comparison can distinguish a connection closure from a stream that remains connected but violates YouTube’s ingest expectations. “It happens at night” alone cannot identify the ISP, a particular route or any other cause.

Check YouTube’s ingest settings and health message
Match bitrate and keyframes to the stream
YouTube recommends testing upload capacity and monitoring stream health. Its current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds, and says not to exceed four seconds. The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates—not measurements of what your broadband line can sustain:
| H.264 stream setting | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These values follow the current YouTube encoder guide; check its guidance for other codecs, resolutions and frame rates rather than applying an H.264 figure to a different configuration. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate” (YouTube Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions). Measure upload performance when the drops occur: a recommended encoding bitrate is not evidence that your connection has enough stable upload capacity at that time.
Use the warning to choose the next check
YouTube Live health messages cover problems such as bitrate that is too high or low, frame-rate and GOP/keyframe issues, codec problems, and insufficient video arriving for a smooth stream. Read the specific status and correct the corresponding setting before changing unrelated network or encoder options (YouTube Live stream health status messages).

For RTMPS, verify the connection details
If your setup uses RTMPS, check the protocol, ingestion endpoint, application path/name, port 443 and TLS. The server hostname is also needed for SNI authentication. A mismatch in these details can look like a connection interruption even when the underlying issue is connection setup (YouTube RTMPS ingestion requirements).
If you use SRS, inspect each connection separately
When the encoder-to-SRS publish fails
Check the encoder’s publish log and the SRS log at the recorded failure time. Confirm that the encoder is publishing to the intended SRS host and stream path, and compare the source network’s upload and connection behavior during the failure and stable windows.
When SRS-to-YouTube forwarding fails
If the encoder’s publish to SRS stays up while YouTube stops receiving the stream, investigate the SRS host’s outbound route, process and resource logs, forwarding target URL and credentials, and reconnect behavior. Verify the configured target against YouTube’s current ingest details.

Run repeated upload, latency and packet-loss observations during the hours when the stream fails, then compare them with a stable period. Keep the measurements tied to the same source connection and note any changes in the encoder, SRS host or route. These observations can help narrow down where performance changes, but timing by itself does not prove ISP congestion or throttling.
TRAI reports peak-hour network-link utilization as one broadband quality dimension. That is a network-level metric, not a diagnosis of an individual subscriber’s route or proof that a specific Indian provider is responsible for a particular stream drop (TRAI performance indicator reports). No India-wide failure rate or specific ISP, city, access technology or nighttime incident is established for this symptom; the cause of an individual failure requires the operator’s logs and time-correlated measurements.

Optional test: compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If the encoder uses Wi-Fi and a wired test is practical, temporarily connect it by Ethernet and compare results under similar conditions. This can help isolate the local wireless segment. It cannot establish or fix a fault on the broadband provider’s route, the SRS host or YouTube’s ingest path; a cable purchase is not a demonstrated cure.
Do not treat SRT as a drop-in fix
SRS’s SRT documentation discusses packet recovery and late-packet behavior under jitter, but that does not make SRT a drop-in replacement for YouTube RTMPS ingest or show that changing protocols will resolve this symptom (SRS SRT documentation).
