Squid Game: The Challenge is a reality competition in which contestants play games and face eliminations for one $4.56 million prize. Netflix describes the overall format as a contest among 456 people; the specific games and rules change by season. Season 2 provides the clearest example: Netflix Tudum lists eight games, ending with four finalists playing Red Light, Green Light.
This is an elimination contest inspired by the scripted Squid Game series, not a recreation of its lethal consequences. Netflix says production considered both physical safety and mental health.
How does Squid Game: The Challenge work?
Netflix’s show description sets out the central stakes: 456 contestants compete for a $4.56 million prize. Contestants play games, and players who lose are eliminated until one winner remains. Those figures describe the show’s premise; they do not mean every season uses the same opening game, sequence or rules.
The reality series borrows the look and ideas of the scripted drama but removes its lethal consequences. Executive producer Tim Harcourt told Netflix Tudum that contestants’ physical safety and mental health are paramount production considerations. The games still involve pressure, strategy and elimination, but losing means leaving the competition.

What games are in Season 2?
Netflix Tudum’s Season 2 guide describes eight games. The lineup moves from a large-group timing challenge through team and social games, then ends with four finalists in Red Light, Green Light.
| Game | How it works | What can eliminate a player |
|---|---|---|
| The Count | Two volunteers estimate when 456 seconds have passed while the other 454 players split between them. | The group whose volunteer is farther from the correct time. |
| Six-Legged Pentathlon | Teams of five race through five mini-games with their legs tied together. | The losing team. |
| Catch | Players line up in color groups as a thrower aims a ball at the front person in a line. | If the ball is dropped, both thrower and intended catcher are eliminated. |
| Mingle | Players form groups of a called size and enter rooms when the carousel stops. | Anyone in a group of the wrong size or left without a room. |
| Marbles | Paired players choose their own marble game and play for 30 minutes. | The loser of the chosen game. |
| Slides and Ladders | Pairs advance across a large board-like set, navigating slides, ladders and question-mark cards. | A wrong choice at a slide or failure to follow a card’s instruction. |
| Circle of Trust | Blindfolded players sit at desks; one places a gift box, and its recipient guesses who delivered it. | A correct guess eliminates the giver; a wrong guess eliminates the recipient. |
| Red Light, Green Light | The four finalists play the familiar stop-and-go movement game. | Movement detected during a red-light pause. |
The table describes Season 2, not a permanent rulebook for the series. Netflix presents that season as a mix of new and returning games, and rules can differ from the scripted show as well as between reality seasons.
How do the Season 2 games work?
The Count: a timing wager for 454 players
Two contestants volunteer to stand on giant X and O markings. The other 454 players divide between the two sides. Each volunteer presses a button when they believe 456 seconds have elapsed. The volunteer whose estimate is closer keeps their side in the game; the other side is eliminated. The challenge is judging time without a clock, with the fate of a large group resting on one person’s estimate.

- House of Cards: Build a balanced structure of seven cards.

The faster team advances and the losing team is eliminated. Unlike the scripted-series version described by Netflix Tudum, this reality-show race has no time limit. Executive producer Stephen Yemoh said the production wanted to bring a sense of competition into the season early.
Catch: throwing, catching and choosing your place
Players divide into four color groups and line up on marked dots. A thrower aims at the person at the front of a line. If that person catches the ball, they become the next thrower. If the ball is dropped, both the thrower and the intended catcher are eliminated. Position in line therefore matters as much as catching ability: a player may be exposed to a throw sooner or later depending on where they stand. Netflix Tudum reports that only 16 balls are used, so some players may not take part. Executive producer Nicola Brown described the game as a simple test of whether a player can catch and throw.

Mingle: make the exact group size
Players stand on a rotating carousel surrounded by doors. When it stops, a number is called. Contestants must quickly form groups of exactly that size and get into a room together. A group with too many or too few people is eliminated, as is anyone unable to enter a room. The game rewards fast coordination, but contestants also have to decide whom to group with under time pressure. Netflix games producer Anna Kidd said 90 cameras were ready to film whatever happened during the setup.
Marbles: choose the contest yourselves
Players pair up, receive bags of marbles and have 30 minutes to choose a game using them. There is no single prescribed game in this description: each pair determines how to compete. The chosen game decides the winner; the loser gives up their marbles and is eliminated. This leaves room for negotiation as well as play, because partners must agree on a contest and then win it.

The apparent drop from the set is an illusion. A player quoted by Netflix Tudum said the slide curves sharply off the back; the production team said the 35-foot set went through more than 200 testing rounds. Those production details explain the set’s construction and testing, not a guarantee that every possible risk has been eliminated.
Circle of Trust: identify the gift-giver
Players sit blindfolded at desks arranged in a circle. A selected player places a gift box on another contestant’s desk. The recipient must guess who placed it. A correct guess eliminates the giver; an incorrect guess eliminates the recipient. The game turns a simple identification question into a test of observation, deception and trust among the remaining players.
Red Light, Green Light: the final four
Season 2 uses Red Light, Green Light as its final game, with four contestants rather than the full field of 456. Netflix reports that finalists wore body-motion tracking sensors and production reviewed video frame by frame to judge movement. That adjudication approach is specific to the reported Season 2 finale; it should not be assumed to describe every season or game.

- Gonggi Stone catching game (Korean Knucklebones) :Start the game by throwing five gong-gis onto the floor. Pick one gong-gi and throw it into the air. While this gong-gi is in the air, grab one that’s on the floor before catching the one in the air. Repeat this to clear the floor.
- Jebi Kicks (Korean Hacky Sack) : Continuously kick ‘Jebi’ in the air without dropping. Whoever manages the most number of kicks wins.
- Paeng-y (Spinning Tops) : Prepare by winding a rope around the bottom of the top. Then in one swift movement, yank on the free end of the rope to make the top spin.
- Biseokchigi : Knock down the opponents’ Biseok(rocks) in 18 steps. Each step consists of stably resting the biseok on a body part and moving to opponent’s biseok to knock them down.
- DDAKJI : It's involves two playing tiles of different colors. The point of the game is to flip over the other player's tile, by hitting it with your tile from above. As easy as the rules are, it's actually quite a challenging game that takes a lot more skill than you would think - but no worries, I'll give you a tip later to maximize our chances of winning this pastime.
Do players really fall off the Slides and Ladders set?
No. The apparent fall is a visual illusion: the slide bends sharply behind the set rather than dropping contestants into open space, according to a player quoted by Netflix Tudum. The production team also said it ran more than 200 testing rounds on the 35-foot set.
How does the reality show differ from the scripted series?
The reality format borrows recognizable game concepts and imagery, but the rules are adapted for a competition show and the consequences are elimination, not death. Season 2’s Six-Legged Pentathlon, for example, is a no-time-limit team race that eliminates the losing team; Netflix Tudum notes that it differs from the scripted-series version. Catch, Mingle, the self-selected Marbles games and the other challenges also have their own reality-show procedures.
Because Netflix describes the games as season-specific, the safest way to understand a particular challenge is to check which season it belongs to. A title or visual resemblance to a scripted-series game does not establish that the reality version uses identical rules.
When did Season 2 air?
Netflix Tudum reported that Season 2 was filmed in the United Kingdom and released as a three-week event beginning November 4, 2025, with new episodes on Tuesdays and a finale on November 18. The season comprised 10 episodes and began with 456 entrants. These are historical Season 2 release and production details, not a schedule for later seasons.
