Squadron 42 and Star Citizen are separate products. Star Citizen is the playable PC persistent-game experience and requires an RSI Game Package. Squadron 42 is a separate single-player campaign that RSI still lists as in development and unavailable for download. Buying a Star Citizen package—or a ship pledge—does not by itself prove that Squadron 42 is included; inspect the exact entitlement before pledging.
Squadron 42 vs. Star Citizen at a glance
The names are often treated as if they describe two modes of one finished game. RSI’s own support material instead distinguishes two experiences with different access conditions. The table below captures the practical difference for a prospective player.

| Question | Squadron 42 | Star Citizen |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Single-player campaign. | Persistent online game experience for PC. |
| Availability in the latest reviewed RSI support guidance | In development and not available to download. | Playable on live servers with an RSI account, a Game Package and a qualifying computer. |
| What you must own | A pledge whose entitlement specifically contains Squadron 42; download comes after development, testing and release. | A Star Citizen Game Package. Package contents vary, so read the current listing. |
| Release certainty | No release date is established by the reviewed support pages. | The live experience changes over time; Alpha 4.9 reached live servers on July 15, 2026. |
| Current scope information | Historical campaign targets are not a final, verified mission count or length. | Historical system targets are not a current inventory of released content. |
That distinction answers the most important buying question: access to Star Citizen today and future access to Squadron 42 are separate entitlements.
What each title represents
Squadron 42 is the campaign product
RSI describes Squadron 42 as a single-player campaign. In practical terms, the product is intended for a self-contained, player-versus-the-game experience rather than the persistent online environment used by Star Citizen. The reviewed material does not establish a current mission count, campaign length, final system count, or complete feature list, so those details should not be treated as settled specifications.

The distinction also matters for ownership. RSI’s support article Where can I download Squadron 42?, updated February 4, 2026, says: “Squadron 42 is currently in development and is not available for download.” Accounts with a pledge containing Squadron 42 are expected to receive a download option only after development is completed, testing is finished and the game has been released.
Star Citizen is the live persistent experience
RSI’s checklist and pledge guidance describe Star Citizen as the PC game accessed on live servers. A Game Package is the normal route to that access. The package generally includes Star Citizen, a ship and other listed items, but the store listing—not the product name alone—defines what a particular package grants.
Because Star Citizen is a live project, its systems can change between updates. RSI’s July 2026 Welcome Back, Pilot update provides one concrete example: Alpha 4.9 reached live servers on July 15, 2026 and included ship-combat user-interface enhancements. That is evidence of an evolving live build, not a guarantee that every planned system is complete or that the final vision has shipped.

Can you play Squadron 42 now?
Not according to RSI’s latest reviewed support statement. The February 4, 2026 download article says the campaign remains in development and is not available for download. RSI’s checklist, updated April 16, 2026, gives the same status and says the single-player campaign is not yet available.
Those pages do not provide a launch date. Do not convert a trailer, a historical milestone, a store label or a pledge description into a predicted release window. The only supported sequence is:

- Development must be completed.
- The completed build must undergo testing.
- The game must be released.
- Owners of a qualifying Squadron 42 pledge can then download it through the applicable account process.
If a listing suggests immediate Squadron 42 access, compare its entitlement wording with the current RSI support guidance before paying. A pledge can record future entitlement without making an unreleased game downloadable today.
What you need to play Star Citizen
Account and package
RSI’s April 16, 2026 checklist says live-server access starts with an RSI account and a Star Citizen Game Package. The April 14, 2026 Pledges FAQ likewise says a Star Citizen Game Package is required to play Star Citizen today. A standalone Squadron 42 pledge is identified as an exception to the usual Star Citizen package description; it should not be assumed to provide the live game.

The reviewed pages say that your computer must meet the game’s requirements, but they do not establish a reliable current table of processor, graphics, memory, storage or operating-system specifications. Use the current RSI requirements and launcher guidance when you are ready to install. Do not rely on an old forum signature, a historical crowdfunding page or a specification copied from a different Alpha build.
Installation path
The practical sequence is straightforward, but each step has a distinct purpose:
- Create or sign in to your RSI account. Use the account that will hold the pledge; entitlements are associated with that account.
- Open the current RSI store listing. Confirm that the item is labelled as a Star Citizen Game Package, not only as a ship, upgrade or standalone campaign pledge.
- Read the included-entitlements panel. Verify that Star Citizen, the game package access and the listed ship or extras appear before checkout.
- Complete the pledge under the intended account. RSI’s terms describe pledges as contributions toward development, with entitlements determined by the selected pledge and applicable terms.
- Install the current RSI launcher and sign in. The launcher should recognize the package on the same account.
- Check the live-server option. If the account has a qualifying Game Package and the computer meets the current requirements, the live game should be available through the launcher.
If the launcher does not show Star Citizen, first verify that you are signed into the account that made the pledge. Then recheck the order’s entitlement text and account status before assuming an installation problem.

- INSTANT PLUG AND PLAY SETUP - Stop wasting time with complicated installations and start flying in seconds because this USB joystick is recognized immediately by your system with zero driver headaches, letting you jump straight into your favorite flight simulator, space sim joystick adventure, or combat flight stick scenario without any frustrating delays or technical setup.
- PRECISE ADJUSTABLE RESISTANCE CONTROL - Feel total command over every maneuver with an extremely precise flight joystick featuring adjustable resistance that lets you fine tune stick tension to match your flying style, whether you are executing gentle banking turns in a flight simulator controller session or engaging in intense dogfights that demand razor sharp responsiveness.
- SOLID WEIGHTED STABILITY BASE - Never worry about your flight stick sliding or tipping during critical moments thanks to a heavily weighted base that keeps your joystick for pc firmly planted on your desk, giving you the confidence to make aggressive inputs during turbulent helicopter controller scenarios or high speed combat engagements without any unwanted movement.
- BUILT IN THROTTLE AND RUDDER TWIST - Enjoy a complete flight control system in one device with an ergonomic integrated throttle lever for smooth speed management and a rotating handle with a built in locking system that delivers flawless rudder control, eliminating the need for separate rudder pedals or a standalone flight throttle while saving valuable desk space.
- FULLY PROGRAMMABLE BUTTONS AND PRESETS - Customize every aspect of your gaming joystick experience using twelve reprogrammable buttons, an exclusive mapping button, and a preset button with internal memory that stores your configurations, so you can instantly switch between flight sim stick profiles for different joystick for flight simulator games and aircraft types.
Do you need to buy Star Citizen to play Squadron 42?
The reviewed RSI guidance does not make Star Citizen a prerequisite for the campaign. Instead, it treats Squadron 42 as a separate pledge entitlement. That means the relevant question is not whether you own a ship or a Star Citizen package; it is whether the exact pledge contains Squadron 42.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For a future campaign release, an account with the correct entitlement should be able to download Squadron 42 after release conditions are met. An account that owns only Star Citizen access should not be presumed to receive the campaign automatically. Conversely, a standalone Squadron 42 pledge should not be presumed to unlock the persistent online game.
Store contents can change. Before purchase, expand the current listing’s entitlement details, save the order information for your records and check whether each desired product is named explicitly. If the wording is ambiguous, ask RSI support before pledging rather than relying on the shared universe, a ship name or an old package guide.
How gameplay differs
Session structure
A single-player campaign and a persistent online game answer different use cases. Squadron 42 is designed around progressing through one authored campaign on your own account. Star Citizen is designed as an ongoing online environment whose live build is updated over time. The reviewed sources do not justify a more detailed claim about mission structure, player roles, economy, progression or social features, so those should be checked against current official documentation rather than inferred from the labels.
Online access
Star Citizen’s access model explicitly involves live servers and a Game Package. Squadron 42’s currently unavailable status means there is no present download or online session to test. Anyone choosing between them should therefore decide whether they want an available, changing online game now or are willing to hold a separate campaign entitlement for a later release.

Control hardware
A PC flight stick or HOTAS joystick is an optional accessory for readers interested in ship flight and combat in Star Citizen. RSI identifies Star Citizen as a PC game, and the July 2026 update discusses ship-combat interface changes. The sources do not say that a joystick is required, name supported models or report device testing. Check compatibility for the specific hardware and current game build before buying; a standard mouse-and-keyboard setup may be the safer starting point until you know which controls you prefer.
What “scope” can—and cannot—be concluded
Historical crowdfunding material contains changing targets for Squadron 42 mission counts and Star Citizen star-system counts. Those figures were campaign-era goals, not verified final delivery numbers. Presenting them as the finished scope would turn an old promise into a specification the evidence does not support.
For Squadron 42, the dependable scope statement is therefore qualitative: it is the separate single-player campaign, it remains in development in the cited 2026 support pages, and its release date and final campaign dimensions are not established there. For Star Citizen, the dependable scope statement is that a playable live experience exists and continues to receive updates; the exact inventory of systems and features depends on the current build.
This uncertainty is material when comparing value. A buyer seeking a fixed campaign length cannot calculate one from the archived targets. A buyer seeking a particular number of star systems cannot treat the crowdfunding archive as a current map. Use live release notes and the current store or support pages for transactional and build-specific decisions.

Game access versus a ship listing
A ship listing, upgrade or other pledge item is not the same thing as a Game Package. RSI’s checklist says packages generally include Star Citizen and a ship, while the Pledges FAQ separately recognizes a standalone Squadron 42 pledge. Read the access entitlement first, then inspect the vehicle and extras. Starting with the ship name can lead you to an item that does not provide the game access you wanted.

Pledge terminology
RSI’s legal terms characterize contributions as pledges toward development and define selected entitlements through the chosen pledge and applicable terms. This is different from describing every listing as a conventional finished-product purchase. Terms can change and may depend on when and how the pledge was made, so review the live terms that apply to your account before checkout.
Prices and package contents
No reliable current price comparison or complete inventory of live pledge offers is established by the reviewed material. Prices, ships, insurance language and promotional contents can change. Use the current RSI store for the amount charged and the exact contents, and treat any older price table as historical unless the live listing confirms it.
A decision guide for different buyers
You want to play something now
Choose the Star Citizen path only if you are comfortable with a live, evolving PC game and can meet the current computer requirements. Confirm that the selected item is a Star Citizen Game Package, then use the account and launcher steps above. Do not add Squadron 42 to your expectations of immediate play; its current support status is separate.
Recommended Free Tools
You want a single-player campaign
Look for an entitlement that explicitly names Squadron 42. Understand that the entitlement is for a future download after development, testing and release, not for an available campaign today. Because no release date is established in the reviewed pages, treat the timing as open.
You want both experiences
Inspect the package line by line. The listing must identify Star Citizen access and Squadron 42 entitlement separately if you want both. A ship-inclusive Star Citizen package does not settle the campaign question, and a standalone campaign pledge does not settle the live-game question.
You are buying for another person
Confirm which RSI account will own the entitlement before paying. A package attached to the wrong account can appear to be missing even when the order succeeded. Give the recipient the account credentials or transfer mechanism permitted by the current RSI terms rather than assuming a ship or code can be moved freely.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Mistake: assuming the shared universe means one purchase unlocks both. Correction: compare the explicit entitlements in the live listing.
- Mistake: buying a ship and expecting game access. Correction: verify the item is a Star Citizen Game Package, not only a vehicle or upgrade.
- Mistake: looking for a Squadron 42 download immediately after pledging. Correction: the February 2026 support article says the campaign is still in development and unavailable for download.
- Mistake: treating a crowdfunding stretch goal as delivered scope. Correction: use historical figures only as development history, not as current mission or system counts.
- Mistake: budgeting from an old price guide. Correction: check the amount and contents on the current RSI store page at checkout.
- Mistake: blaming hardware before checking account access. Correction: confirm the correct RSI account, Game Package entitlement and current launcher status before troubleshooting the computer.
- Mistake: assuming a HOTAS is mandatory. Correction: treat it as optional and verify compatibility for the specific device and build.
How to verify a listing before you pledge
- Identify the product type. Is it a Star Citizen Game Package, a standalone Squadron 42 pledge, a ship, an upgrade or another item?
- Open the full entitlement text. Do not rely on the headline, thumbnail or ship name.
- Match the entitlement to your goal. For live Star Citizen access, the listing must provide the Game Package. For Squadron 42, the campaign must be named explicitly.
- Check availability language. A future entitlement is not a present download. The support status for Squadron 42 remains the deciding evidence.
- Record the account and order details. Keep the account email, order confirmation and entitlement wording together in case support needs to correct an account mismatch.
- Review current terms. Pledges and their applicable conditions can change; read the terms presented for the transaction date.
Bottom line for the comparison
Star Citizen is the option with playable live-server access today, provided you have the required Game Package, account and qualifying PC. Squadron 42 is the separate single-player campaign entitlement, still in development and not downloadable in RSI’s February and April 2026 support material. Decide based on that access difference, verify the exact entitlement in the current listing and treat historical scope targets and old prices as unconfirmed for a present-day purchase.
