Squadron 42 PC requirements: CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage explained

Squadron 42’s published PC baseline is a shared Roberts Space Industries (RSI) requirement for CIG games, not a separate, game-specific recommended specification. You need a 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 system, a quad-core processor with AVX, AVX2 and FMA3, DirectX 11.1 graphics with 4 GB of graphics memory, at least 16 GB of RAM, and an SSD with 150 GB or more. RSI also says the single-player campaign is still in development and is not currently available to download, so these figures are for planning and compatibility rather than a promise of launch-day performance.

The official Squadron 42 requirements at a glance

RSI’s Game and Launcher Requirements article, updated December 17, 2025, says that its listed requirements apply to CIG games including Squadron 42. The page gives a shared baseline rather than separate minimum and recommended tiers for the campaign.

Component Published requirement What you must verify
Operating system Windows 10, 64-bit, with the latest service pack, or Windows 11 Your edition is 64-bit and fully updated
CPU Quad-core processor with AVX, AVX2 and FMA3; RSI examples are Intel i7 Haswell or later, or AMD Excavator or later The exact processor model supports all three instruction sets
GPU DirectX 11.1 graphics card with 4 GB of graphics memory DirectX feature support and dedicated graphics memory, not just the card’s name
Memory 16 GB or more of system RAM Installed RAM, available slots and whether dual-channel operation is possible
Storage SSD with at least 150 GB The target drive is an SSD and has enough free space for the installation and Windows
Launcher and pagefile guidance RSI recommends an NTFS drive with at least 100 GB free for the RSI Launcher and Star Citizen installation, plus 10 GB of additional SSD space for the pagefile Keep this as setup guidance; it is not stated as a Squadron 42 download-size estimate

The table is a compatibility floor. It does not identify a particular graphics-card model, processor SKU, frame-rate target or image-quality preset.

CPU: instruction-set support matters as much as core count

The processor requirement has two parts: a quad-core class CPU and support for AVX, AVX2 and FMA3. A chip can have four or more cores and still fail if one of those instruction sets is absent. Clock speed alone is not a reliable way to check compatibility.

RSI uses Intel i7 Haswell or newer and AMD Excavator or newer as examples. Those labels describe processor generations, not a guarantee that every model in a broad product family is suitable. Check the exact model number installed in your computer and confirm AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 support in the manufacturer’s specification sheet.

How to identify your processor

  1. Open Settings > System > About and note the processor model shown under Device specifications.
  2. Search that exact model on the processor manufacturer’s specification page.
  3. Confirm all three instruction sets separately. Do not infer support from the number of cores, the base clock or the word “gaming” in a product name.

If the model lacks any required instruction set, a software setting cannot fix the problem. You would need a compatible processor and, depending on the platform, a matching motherboard and memory configuration.

GPU: 4 GB and DirectX 11.1 are the stated floor

RSI lists a graphics card supporting DirectX 11.1 with 4 GB of graphics memory. This is an API and memory requirement, not a recommendation for a named card. A newer card normally supports the older DirectX level, but verify the specific model and its current driver rather than relying on age or branding.

Check graphics support in Windows

  1. Press Windows key + R, enter dxdiag, and press Enter.
  2. Open the Display tab for the discrete GPU, if your PC has more than one adapter.
  3. Record the adapter name and dedicated display memory. The feature-level information indicates the DirectX capabilities exposed by the driver.
  4. Install the latest stable driver supplied for that GPU before troubleshooting a launch or rendering problem.

Integrated graphics can report shared memory taken from system RAM, which is not the same thing as a card with dedicated graphics memory. Compare the dedicated-memory figure with the published floor and remember that meeting it does not establish a frame-rate result.

RAM: 16 GB is the published minimum

The shared RSI page specifies 16 GB or more of system memory. This is separate from graphics memory: adding system RAM does not turn a 2 GB graphics adapter into a 4 GB card.

Check capacity and available headroom

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Performance > Memory to see installed capacity, current use, speed and the number of occupied slots.
  3. Close browsers, launchers and background utilities while checking available memory, because a machine that technically has the required capacity can still run short during a large game launch.

If your system has less than the listed capacity, adding a matched memory kit is usually simpler than replacing the whole platform, provided the motherboard supports the modules. Confirm the motherboard’s maximum capacity and memory type before purchasing. RSI does not publish a Squadron 42 recommendation for 32 GB, so treat larger capacities as a general multitasking or future-proofing decision, not as an official campaign specification.

Storage: use an SSD and plan capacity carefully

RSI requires an SSD with at least 150 GB. The requirement is about the storage medium as well as nominal capacity: an HDD may have enough room but does not satisfy the stated SSD condition.

Verify the drive type

  1. Open the Start menu and search for Defragment and Optimize Drives.
  2. In the Media type column, identify the volume where you plan to install the game. Windows labels solid-state storage as an SSD and mechanical storage as a hard disk drive.
  3. In File Explorer, right-click the drive, choose Properties, and check free space rather than total capacity alone.

RSI’s launcher guidance calls for an NTFS-formatted drive with at least 100 GB free for the RSI Launcher and Star Citizen installation, together with another 10 GB of SSD space for the pagefile. That wording concerns the launcher and Star Citizen setup; it is not a claim that Squadron 42’s eventual download will be exactly 100 GB or 110 GB. Leave room for Windows updates, temporary unpacking files and normal system operation instead of filling the drive to its last gigabyte.

An internal SSD is the straightforward upgrade path when the operating-system drive is a small solid-state module or the only available disk is mechanical. Check the motherboard’s connector type, laptop drive size and available mounting space before ordering an upgrade. RSI does not endorse a particular SSD model or interface.

Operating-system support and what is not supported

The supported operating systems in the shared requirements are 64-bit Windows 10 with the latest service pack and Windows 11. RSI states that Linux and macOS are not currently supported in that article. A 32-bit Windows installation therefore does not meet the published baseline, even if the hardware is otherwise powerful enough.

To check your edition, open Settings > System > About and look at System type. Type winver in the Start menu to see the Windows version, then install pending updates before diagnosing launcher or driver behavior.

There is no separate Squadron 42 recommended-spec table

Readers often encounter a second RSI page and assume its recommendation is for Squadron 42. The Star Citizen Minimum System Requirements page, updated September 23, 2026, lists a Star Citizen recommended configuration of a quad- or eight-core CPU, a DirectX 12 GPU with 8 GB of VRAM, 32 GB of DDR4 memory and a 150 GB or larger SSD.

Specification Star Citizen page’s recommendation How to interpret it for Squadron 42
Processor Quad- or eight-core CPU Not a separately published Squadron 42 recommendation
Graphics DirectX 12 GPU with 8 GB VRAM Do not silently substitute this for Squadron 42’s shared DirectX 11.1 and 4 GB floor
Memory 32 GB DDR4 Star Citizen guidance, not a confirmed campaign target
Storage 150 GB or larger SSD Consistent with the shared storage floor, but still published on the Star Citizen page

RSI warns on that Star Citizen page that requirements can change while the game remains in development. Until RSI publishes a distinct Squadron 42 performance tier, buying hardware solely to match the Star Citizen recommendation would be an assumption rather than an official guarantee.

Use this five-minute compatibility check before upgrading

  1. Confirm Windows. Verify 64-bit Windows 10 with the latest service pack or Windows 11 in Settings > System > About.
  2. Record the CPU model. Check the exact model’s AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 entries on the manufacturer’s specification page, then confirm it is in the quad-core class described by RSI.
  3. Check the GPU. Run dxdiag, record the active adapter, verify DirectX feature support and compare dedicated graphics memory with the table.
  4. Check RAM. In Task Manager’s Memory panel, verify installed capacity and inspect free slots if an upgrade may be needed.
  5. Check the destination SSD. Confirm Windows identifies it as solid-state, verify NTFS formatting, and measure free space on the actual volume where the launcher would be installed.
  6. Write down the shortfall. A failed CPU instruction-set check is a platform issue; insufficient GPU memory points to a graphics upgrade; low RAM points to a memory upgrade; and a mechanical or undersized drive points to storage.

This order prevents an unnecessary purchase. For example, replacing a graphics card will not help a processor that lacks AVX2, and adding RAM will not make an HDD meet an SSD requirement.

What to upgrade when a component falls short

CPU shortfall

Instruction-set compatibility is binary: the required set is present or it is not. If the CPU fails that check, investigate the motherboard socket, firmware support and memory compatibility before choosing a replacement. A faster clock on an incompatible chip does not solve the issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GPU shortfall

Prioritize a card with the required API support and dedicated memory. Check power-supply capacity, connector requirements, case clearance and monitor outputs at the same time. The published floor does not tell you which card will deliver a desired resolution or frame rate.

RAM shortfall

Use the motherboard manual to select a supported capacity and module type. Installing a matched kit is generally preferable to mixing unrelated modules, but the motherboard’s limits decide what is possible.

Storage shortfall

Choose an SSD that fits the computer and keep enough unoccupied space for the operating system and launcher operations. On a desktop, a second internal drive can avoid migrating Windows; on a laptop, the existing module may need to be replaced and cloned.

Performance expectations: passing the checklist is not a benchmark

RSI’s shared requirements do not promise a particular frame rate, resolution, graphics preset or loading time. The separate Star Citizen requirements page notes that performance, frame rates and stability can vary with location, server population, background applications and network conditions. That warning is useful context, but it is not a Squadron 42 benchmark or a tested campaign result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because Squadron 42 remains in development, drivers, engine behavior and final optimization may change before release. Treat the published figures as a compatibility gate: they tell you what RSI currently lists as necessary, not what hardware will guarantee a chosen visual setting.

Is Squadron 42 available yet?

RSI’s Where can I download Squadron 42? support article, updated February 4, 2026, says the game is in development and unavailable for download. RSI’s Get Started Checklist, updated April 16, 2026, likewise says the single-player campaign is still in development and not available. Those pages do not provide a firm release date.

That status explains why there is no official, separately labeled Squadron 42 recommended configuration to compare with the shared baseline. Recheck RSI’s support pages when a release announcement or a dedicated requirements table appears, especially if you are planning a major platform purchase.

Practical buying checklist

  • Confirm the CPU’s AVX, AVX2 and FMA3 support from the exact model specification.
  • Choose a GPU that meets the stated DirectX and dedicated-memory floor, then size the power supply and case around it.
  • Install at least the published system-memory capacity, with motherboard expansion limits in mind.
  • Reserve an SSD volume that exceeds the listed capacity and leaves working room for Windows, the launcher and temporary files.
  • Use a supported 64-bit Windows edition and current drivers.
  • Do not pay a premium for a supposed Squadron 42 “recommended” tier unless RSI publishes one or independent testing establishes the performance target you actually want.
  • Recheck the official requirements before buying, because the game is still in development and specifications may change.
