What kind of game is coming to consoles?
Squad is not designed as a conventional run-and-gun arcade shooter. It is an online tactical FPS built around communication, teamwork and coordinated movement. Its defining systems include positional voice communication, combined-arms combat, logistics, base construction and defensive fortifications.

Large team battles
Official product material describes battles of up to 50 players versus 50 players. That scale makes squad leadership, map awareness and keeping supply routes open more important than simply maximizing individual eliminations.
Combined arms and logistics
Faction-specific weapons and vehicles support infantry, armor and other battlefield roles. Logistics players move supplies needed for forward positions and defensive structures, while commanders and squad leaders coordinate where those resources are spent.

Is Squad free on PS5?
The Alpha Preview is reported as free. That does not mean the finished console game will be free-to-play. No final console price, subscription requirement, edition structure or downloadable-content policy has been announced in the reviewed material.
The official store currently lists digital Steam keys, Fireteam Edition keys and Squad apparel. Those listings concern the existing PC product and merchandise; they do not confirm a physical PS5 or Xbox retail edition. A console purchase page and pricing should be treated as authoritative only once the platform stores publish them.
What is still unknown before launch?
Several practical questions matter to console players but remain unanswered:
- Whether PS5 and Xbox players can play together or with PC players.
- Whether progression, purchases and statistics carry between platforms.
- The minimum online-service requirements for each console.
- Console performance modes, field of view options and accessibility settings.
- How the alpha handles matchmaking, moderation and server regions.
- The final price, editions and launch-day content.
These are not minor differences: they determine how the console community will be split, what hardware performance players can expect and whether progress survives a platform change.
What the announcement means for console players
The October PS5 test is the first practical opportunity for console owners to see how Squad’s slower, communication-heavy battles translate to a controller and a living-room setup. The 2027 target indicates that the alpha is an early step toward a full release, not the finished product. Players should therefore judge the preview as a test of the console build and its online infrastructure, not as a guarantee that every launch feature is already locked.
