Use SQLDBM when the hard part is designing, documenting, or communicating database structures; use dbt when the hard part is implementing and maintaining SQL transformations in a data warehouse. They address different layers of data work, and some teams can use both: SQLDBM documents an export of model definitions as dbt YAML.
What is the difference between SQLDBM and dbt?
SQLDBM is a browser-based data-modeling environment. It supports conceptual, logical, and physical models, and can be used to design structures or reverse-engineer an existing database. Its visual model gives people a way to inspect and discuss how data structures relate.
dbt is a framework for transforming data inside a warehouse. A dbt model is a SQL select statement that dbt builds into a warehouse object, such as a view or table. The dbt workflow also covers testing and documenting models, alongside software-engineering practices such as version control, modularity, and CI/CD.
In short, data modeling describes the structures and relationships a system should have; data transformation specifies how warehouse data is shaped into usable outputs. A model-design tool and a transformation framework may support related work, but they are not interchangeable. When should you use SQLDBM?
Choose SQLDBM when your team needs a visual surface for designing or explaining database structures, rather than primarily a system for running transformation code.
- Designing a schema: Create and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical views of a database model.
- Understanding an existing database: Reverse-engineer structures so the team can inspect and discuss them in a model.
- Communicating across roles: Give technical and nontechnical stakeholders a visual way to review data structures and relationships.
- Connecting model work to code workflows: SQLDBM documents Git integration and export of model definitions as dbt YAML. Treat the export as a handoff to validate, not a guarantee that generated files will follow every repository’s naming or deployment conventions.
When should you use dbt?
Choose dbt when the central need is to write, run, and maintain SQL transformations in a warehouse through a repeatable code workflow.

The dbt Developer Hub describes the product this way: “dbt transforms raw warehouse data into trusted data products.” That statement captures its transformation role; it does not make dbt a visual schema-design environment.
Can SQLDBM and dbt be used together?
Yes. A team can use SQLDBM for visual schema design and communication while managing warehouse transformations in dbt. SQLDBM says it can export model definitions as dbt YAML, providing a documented integration path. The export does not establish that every generated artifact will match a particular dbt repository’s conventions, so check it in a representative project before relying on it in a production workflow.

Start with the task causing the most friction, then check how the team needs to review and maintain the work.

- For SQLDBM, confirm that its modeling and reverse-engineering capabilities match the database structures your team needs to represent.
- For dbt, confirm that a code-based SQL workflow fits the warehouse transformations and review practices you need.
- If connecting the tools, test the SQLDBM-to-dbt YAML handoff in your own repository, including naming and deployment conventions.
