Both Sprout Social and Hootsuite offer centralized ways to handle social conversations, but their documented comment coverage and workflows differ by network and surface. The better fit depends on which platforms you use, whether you need to moderate paid-post comments, how you assign work, and what response reporting your team needs.
How comment coverage differs by platform
The comparison below reflects the vendors’ published documentation as of October 7, 2026. It describes vendor-listed capabilities, not an independent test. Network permissions and integrations can affect what appears in an inbox, and monitoring a mention is not always the same as moderating comments on an owned post.

| Platform or interaction | Sprout Social | Hootsuite |
|---|---|---|
| Owned-profile comments | Lists comment moderation through Smart Inbox for owned profiles. Sprout feature list | Inbox documentation lists Facebook Page, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and Threads comment workflows. Hootsuite Inbox documentation |
| Paid or dark-post comments | Lists paid-ad comment moderation through Smart Inbox. Sprout feature list | Documents public comments on Facebook Page and Instagram paid/dark posts in Inbox. Hootsuite Inbox documentation |
| YouTube comments | Not established in the cited Sprout feature documentation. | Moderation is described through Streams, including replying, hiding or removing comments, reporting spam, and moderating before publication. Hootsuite Inbox documentation |
| X | Lists Brand Keywords for keyword, hashtag, and location searches across X; this is monitoring, not proof of identical owned-post moderation controls. Sprout feature list | Documentation refers to X monitoring and mentions; do not assume those provide the same controls as owned-post comment moderation. Hootsuite Inbox documentation |
Hootsuite’s documented TikTok coverage is for comments on owned videos, and restrictions apply. Its YouTube moderation workflow is in Streams rather than the Inbox/Nest workflow. Sprout describes Smart Inbox as a shared stream for connected profiles’ incoming comments, direct messages, and mentions; availability still depends on network access and current integrations. What each team workflow includes
Sprout Social: shared inbox and conversation control
Sprout describes Smart Inbox as a place to review incoming messages and comments across connected profiles. Its listed tools include custom views, contact and conversation context, message completion to focus on open conversations, and collision detection when a teammate is viewing or responding. The feature page lists comment moderation for owned profiles and paid-ad comments. Smart Inbox
#1 Best Overall
Hootsuite: Inbox/Nest plus Streams
Hootsuite describes Inbox/Nest as a common place to respond to public and private messages. Its Standard plan page describes a unified inbox, saved replies, conversation history, and contact notes. YouTube is handled separately in Streams, where the documentation describes additional moderation actions. Standard plan
Plans, reporting, and collaboration features
Plan packaging is a key distinction. Sprout’s feature page says Smart Inbox, comment moderation, paid-ad comment moderation, custom views, case management, and collision detection are included in all plans. It places message tagging, engagement reporting, case-completion reporting, and comprehensive tag reporting in Professional and Advanced; team/productivity reporting and helpdesk integration are listed for Advanced. Rank #2
Hootsuite says Inbox is available with its plans. Its documentation associates real-time reporting, Salesforce integration, and a generative AI chatbot with Enterprise, and describes Advanced Inbox as an Enterprise add-on. The Advanced plan page emphasizes automated routing, message assignment, team collaboration, customer-care workflows, and reporting. Neither feature set should be treated as a guarantee that every reply metric is available in every tier. Match reporting needs—such as response volume, response time, or case completion—to the plan’s current feature list before subscribing.

A practical way to choose
- List the exact surfaces you moderate. Separate owned organic posts, paid or dark posts, short-form video, YouTube, and public mentions. Check each network in the table and confirm any account-permission requirements.
- Test the moderation actions you require. For a representative post, verify whether the tool can surface comments and whether the team can reply, hide, remove, report spam, or moderate before publication as needed.
- Map the handoff. Decide whether agents need assignment, routing, saved replies, conversation history, collision prevention, or case tracking. Confirm the necessary features are included in the tier you are considering.
- Specify the reporting before comparing plans. Identify the response and team measures you need, then check their plan availability rather than assuming a unified inbox includes every report.
- Compare current terms on equivalent inputs. Use each vendor’s current plan pages or quote path, matching team size, connected profiles, billing period, and required add-ons. The available evidence does not establish a reliable like-for-like price comparison.
Sprout Social is a strong candidate when its documented Smart Inbox coverage, collision detection, and paid-ad moderation align with the team’s needs. Hootsuite is worth assessing when the specific Inbox/Nest and Streams workflows match the required networks—especially where YouTube moderation matters—or when its routing and Enterprise options fit the support operation. Neither is a universal winner: verify the exact channels and tier for your accounts.

The vendors’ pages document their own capabilities and plan descriptions; they do not establish a dated independent head-to-head result. Sprout’s Smart Inbox page summarizes a Forrester Total Economic Impact study as finding a 10% productivity gain for customer service specialists using its workflows. The page does not state the study year, so this figure should be treated as a vendor-reported study summary, not a general forecast for every team. Sprout Smart Inbox
