To stop sprite-sheet animation from jittering, give every frame the same logical canvas and anchor, define the sheet grid precisely, and preserve trim metadata whenever transparent margins are removed. Then verify that your renderer maps source pixels to device pixels cleanly. A fixed rectangular cell makes slicing predictable; a shared canvas and pivot keep the visible artwork from jumping as frames change.
The two different problems people call “jitter”
Sprite animation can look unstable for two independent reasons. The first is an artwork-placement problem: each pose occupies a different part of its nominal rectangle because transparent margins, feet positions, or the silhouette vary. The second is an atlas-rendering problem: a packer trims each frame to a different rectangle, and the renderer draws those cutouts without restoring their original offsets. In both cases, the sprite’s apparent origin changes even though the animation timeline is correct.

A fixed-cell contract solves coordinate instability, not intentional motion. A character can still lean, squash, recoil, or lift a foot between poses. The contract ensures that those poses are evaluated inside the same coordinate frame and around the same pivot.

Define the logical frame before drawing
Choose one source-pixel canvas
Set a logical frame width and height in source pixels, such as 32 × 48 or 64 × 64, and use that rectangle for every frame in the animation. The rectangle is the coordinate space used by the importer and the renderer; it is not necessarily the visible bounding box of the character.

Keep transparent pixels inside that rectangle when possible. If the character’s head, weapon, or shadow reaches a different edge in another pose, the artwork should move within the shared canvas rather than changing the canvas itself. This lets the same texture size and placement values be reused as frames are swapped. SpriteKit’s documentation makes the same point: changing a texture may require corresponding size, anchor-point, and center-rectangle changes, while consistently sized textures and anchor placement allow the same values to work across frames.
Set an explicit anchor or pivot
Record the pivot in source-pixel coordinates. A character that should stand on the ground might use a pivot at the horizontal center and the bottom edge; a projectile may use its geometric center. Do not infer the pivot from each frame’s visible bounds. If the anchor is recomputed after trimming, a pose with a larger transparent margin will appear to jump.
Decide whether the pivot is expressed from the top-left, bottom-left, or center of the logical canvas, and write that convention in the handoff. The numerical coordinates are only meaningful when the origin convention is known.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWrite a sheet contract next to every image
A sheet should ship with a compact metadata block. The contract removes guesswork from import settings and gives another developer enough information to reproduce the animation without opening the art editor.

Use values that match the actual asset. If the final row is partial, say how many cells are valid; otherwise an importer may create empty frames. If animation sequences are not simply consecutive, list explicit frame indices instead of relying on row order.

Check the grid mathematically
For a sheet with no outer margin and no spacing, the geometry is simple:
sheet width = columns × frame width
sheet height = rows × frame height
When offsets, gutters, or spacing exist, include them in the calculation. For a horizontal row, the right edge of the last cell must remain inside the image:
origin-x + columns × frame-width + (columns − 1) × horizontal-spacing ≤ sheet-width
Apply the equivalent expression vertically, including the origin-y, frame height, and vertical spacing. Check every declared cell, not just the first and last. A one-pixel discrepancy can shift all later slices and may be mistaken for animation jitter.

Importers expose these values separately. PlayCanvas supports slicing by frame count or frame size and includes offset, spacing, and pivot controls. Solar2D’s uniform-sheet example uses frame width, frame height, and a total frame count. Aseprite’s sheet controls include x/y offset, sprite width and height, padding, sheet layout, and order. Treat “frame size,” “trimmed rectangle,” and “on-screen display size” as different measurements.

Choose a layout: fixed grid or packed atlas
A fixed grid is easiest to inspect and hand off: every cell has the same dimensions, and an importer can derive coordinates from the origin, spacing, and row/column count. A tightly packed atlas saves texture area but requires more metadata and a renderer that understands source dimensions and trim offsets.
| Workflow | Authoring and inspection | Metadata needed | Ordering | Space efficiency | Importer complexity |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed grid | Uniform cells are easy to inspect and edit manually | Frame size, origin, spacing, padding, counts, and pivot | Row/column traversal or explicit indices | Retains transparent space in each cell | Usually straightforward slicing |
| Tightly packed atlas | Rectangles vary and are harder to inspect by eye | Atlas rectangle plus original source size and trim x/y offsets | Explicit frame records or sequence indices are safest | Removes unused transparent margins | Renderer must restore source placement |
Neither format is universally better. Use a fixed grid for a simple cross-tool handoff or when artists and programmers need to inspect coordinates directly. Use packing when texture-memory or draw-call constraints justify the additional metadata and validation.
Trim safely when an atlas removes transparency
Trimming is compatible with stable animation only when the original canvas is recoverable. For every trimmed rectangle, retain:
- The rectangle’s x, y, width, and height inside the atlas.
- The original untrimmed source width and height.
- The trim offset from the original source origin.
- A common animation bound, or enough information to restore each frame into the shared logical canvas.
At draw time, place the trimmed pixels at their recorded offset inside a canvas with the original source dimensions, then apply the common pivot. Do not center each cutout by its own width and height. A narrow pose would otherwise be centered differently from a wide pose.

Phaser’s atlas specification exposes source dimensions and trim offsets for this reason. Its group-aware trimming design uses the union bounding box across frames so every frame in a group receives identical trim bounds, preventing playback jitter while still removing pixels outside the group’s common extent.
Two safe trimming strategies
- Restore on import: expand each trimmed rectangle back into the logical frame canvas before the animation system sees it. The runtime then handles ordinary fixed-size frames.
- Restore at render time: keep packed rectangles, but use source width, source height, and trim offsets in every draw call. The destination position is calculated from the logical pivot, not from the trimmed rectangle’s center.
Do not mix metadata from one strategy with the other. If the importer has already restored the source canvas, applying the trim offset again will create a second displacement.
Specify frame order and timing separately
The physical arrangement of cells is not the animation definition. Record whether frames are read left-to-right across each row, top-to-bottom down each column, or through an explicit index list. An explicit list is safer for non-linear animations, shared poses, or sheets containing several actions.
Keep sequence data separate from geometry. For each sequence, identify its name, ordered frame indices, duration per frame or timing policy, loop direction, and loop count. Solar2D documents both consecutive sequences and sequences listed by explicit indices, with timing and looping treated as animation properties. This separation prevents a harmless sheet re-layout from silently changing playback.

Make browser output pixel-stable
Correct slicing does not guarantee crisp pixels. Browsers ordinarily smooth enlarged images, which can blur hard pixel edges. For pixel art, apply an appropriate pixelated image-rendering mode:

Use the source image dimensions, canvas backing dimensions, and CSS display dimensions deliberately. Preserve the source aspect ratio. If the project requires a uniform pixel grid, prefer integer scale factors such as 2×, 3×, or 4× and test the actual browser zoom and device-pixel-ratio combinations that matter.
MDN notes that when CSS pixels do not map evenly to device pixels—including under non-integer device-pixel ratios or zoom—some pixels can appear wider than others. It also distinguishes arbitrary CSS scaling from drawing into a differently sized canvas area: a non-integer drawing factor can introduce blur even when the source image is correct. A canvas backing store sized for the intended device pixels, followed by an explicitly chosen CSS size, makes the mapping easier to reason about.
Browser validation checklist
- Confirm the image is sliced at source-pixel coordinates, not at CSS dimensions.
- Set the canvas backing width and height explicitly.
- Keep the CSS display aspect ratio identical to the logical canvas.
- Test integer scale factors first when hard-edged pixels are required.
- Check browser zoom and device-pixel-ratio combinations used by the project.
- Verify that filtering is disabled or pixelated where the renderer supports that choice.
A practical handoff and import procedure
- Measure the source: record the image’s total width and height in pixels.
- Choose the logical cell: set one frame width and height that can contain every pose in the animation.
- Place the pivot: mark its source-pixel coordinates and origin convention on the contract.
- Lay out the sheet: define origin, spacing, gutters, columns, rows, and valid-frame count.
- Declare traversal: document row-major or column-major order, or list frame indices explicitly.
- Define sequences: attach names, frame order, timing, and loop behavior without changing the geometry fields.
- Decide trimming: retain transparent cells for simplicity, or export trim rectangles with source dimensions and offsets.
- Import with matching fields: enter the exact frame size, offset, spacing, count, order, and pivot in the target editor.
- Validate bounds: calculate the final cell edges and confirm every declared frame lies inside the image.
- Test playback: inspect a stationary reference point such as the feet or muzzle while stepping through frames.
- Test rendering: check filtering, integer scaling, canvas backing size, browser zoom, and device-pixel ratio.
Troubleshoot a sprite that still jumps
Every frame shifts by the same amount
Check the pivot origin convention and the importer’s offset. A top-left coordinate entered into a center-based pivot field produces a consistent displacement.
Only trimmed frames jump
Compare the atlas rectangle with the original source width, source height, and trim x/y offsets. If those fields are absent, restore the frame to the shared canvas during import or regenerate the atlas with trim metadata.
Jumping begins after a particular column or row
Recalculate the sheet geometry with spacing and origin included. An omitted gutter term causes later cells to be sampled from the wrong x or y coordinate.
The character is aligned, but edges shimmer or blur
Inspect filtering and the display scale rather than the frame coordinates. Non-integer CSS scaling, browser zoom, or device-pixel-ratio mapping can make neighboring pixels appear different sizes.
Playback order is wrong but positions are stable
Correct the traversal or sequence index list. Geometry and animation order are independent; changing the pivot will not repair an ordering error.

Final acceptance checklist
- Every frame uses the declared logical width and height.
- The pivot is identical across the animation and its origin convention is documented.
- Origin, spacing, padding, row/column counts, and valid-frame count reproduce the sheet exactly.
- The final row’s validity is explicit.
- Frame order and sequence timing are recorded independently of physical layout.
- Trimmed frames include atlas rectangles, original source dimensions, and trim offsets, or have already been restored to the common canvas.
- All cells fit within the image according to the geometry check.
- The target renderer’s filtering, canvas dimensions, display scale, and device-pixel conditions are tested.
- Intentional pose motion remains, but the chosen reference point does not move because of changing margins or pivots.
