Neither platform is universally better. Spotify for Creators is the stronger fit if you want free, integrated hosting, Spotify-specific analytics, video tools, and access to Spotify monetization when your country and show meet its requirements. Apple Podcasts is primarily a catalog and creator-management service that accepts third-party RSS feeds and supports Apple Podcasts subscriptions. Most creators do not need to choose one: host the show where it suits your workflow, then distribute it to both.
The short answer: choose a publishing setup, not an exclusive winner
Spotify and Apple Podcasts occupy different parts of the podcast workflow. Spotify for Creators combines hosting, publishing, distribution, analytics, audience engagement, and monetization tools. Apple Podcasts is a listening catalog supported by Apple Podcasts Connect, where you submit and manage a show that is hosted on an RSS server or created through Apple’s creator workflow.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction changes the comparison. A show can be hosted with Spotify for Creators and submitted to Apple Podcasts, or hosted with an independent RSS provider and sent to both catalogs. Your practical decision is therefore about hosting control, format, analytics, discovery, and monetization eligibility rather than deciding which single app your listeners may use.
No independent head-to-head study establishes that either service produces a larger audience, higher creator satisfaction, or higher earnings. Spotify and Apple documentation establish advertised features and rules, not guaranteed results. Treat each platform’s metrics and eligibility policies as separate, changeable systems.

What each service actually does
Spotify for Creators
Spotify for Creators presents itself as an end-to-end podcast service. Spotify advertises free hosting, audio and video uploads, distribution to major podcast apps, analytics, comments, and monetization tools. If you host there, publishing and Spotify-specific audience data are managed in one account.
Those are Spotify’s product claims, not proof that hosting on Spotify automatically increases reach. Distribution destinations, video availability, and monetization features can vary by country and account. Check the current controls shown in your creator dashboard before moving an established show.
Apple Podcasts and Apple Podcasts Connect
Apple Podcasts is a catalog and listening service. Apple Podcasts Connect is the management interface for submitting a show, validating its feed, changing metadata, viewing listener insights, and configuring subscriptions.

Apple recommends using a third-party host, and feed metadata can override information entered manually in Connect.
Spotify vs. Apple Podcasts at a glance
| Creator priority | Likely fit | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| Free, integrated hosting and publishing | Spotify for Creators | Spotify advertises free hosting, audio and video uploads, distribution, and creator tools. Confirm destinations and current feature availability. |
| Apple catalog listing and show management | Apple Podcasts Connect | Apple accepts an RSS-hosted show or a show created through its own workflow; validation and review are required. |
| Spotify-specific analytics and engagement | Spotify for Creators | Spotify’s June 2026 update added a 30-second play definition, first-time and returning audience views, episode comparisons, engagement data, and longer historical reporting. |
| Platform-run monetization | Depends on country, host, format, and eligibility | Spotify lists explicit hosting and audience thresholds. Apple offers a separate subscription setup. The available official material does not support a like-for-like revenue-share ranking. |
| Distribution to both ecosystems | Independent RSS host or a host that supports both submissions | Apple explicitly supports RSS-hosted shows, while Spotify describes distribution across major apps. Hosting and listening-catalog choices can be separated. |
Decide where the RSS feed should live
Use Spotify for Creators as your host when simplicity is the priority
Spotify hosting can reduce the number of services you must configure. You upload audio or video, manage episodes, view Spotify data, and use Spotify’s creator features from one place. This is attractive for a new show that wants a low-friction start and does not require a separate hosting contract.
Before committing, check whether the destinations you need are supported for your region and format. Also review how an established feed would be redirected if you later move hosts. A host change is a technical migration, not a simple app preference.

Use a separate RSS host when portability matters
An independent host keeps the feed infrastructure separate from any one listening app. That can be useful if you already have a distribution workflow, need host-specific storage or team tools, or want to change listening platforms without moving the feed itself.
With this arrangement, submit the same feed to Apple Podcasts Connect and Spotify’s submission or distribution workflow. Keep ownership of the RSS feed, domain, artwork, and account credentials under the creator or business rather than under a temporary contractor.
Do not confuse a listening app with a host
Listeners can use Spotify or Apple Podcasts without your show being hosted there. The RSS feed is the authoritative publishing source; catalog services fetch episode metadata and media from it. That is why a creator can appear in both catalogs while maintaining one feed.
How to publish one show on both platforms
- Choose and secure the feed host. Confirm that the host produces a valid, publicly reachable RSS 2.0 feed and lets you control the feed URL, artwork, title, author name, category, language, and episode metadata.
- Publish at least one complete episode. Apple requires at least one episode for RSS submission. Include the final audio file, accurate title and description, explicit-content setting where applicable, and artwork that meets the host and directory requirements.
- Validate the feed before submitting it. Resolve missing enclosure URLs, inaccessible media, malformed XML, missing artwork, and inconsistent show identifiers. A feed that works in one app can still fail Apple’s validation.
- Submit to Apple Podcasts Connect. Sign in, add the show by RSS feed, review the imported metadata, and send it through validation and review. If the feed supplies metadata, correcting the host feed may be necessary even when Connect displays editable fields.
- Submit or enable distribution to Spotify. Use Spotify’s current creator onboarding or distribution controls, verify the show identity, and confirm that the episodes and artwork appear correctly. The exact destination setup can change, so follow the labels shown in your account.
- Test both listings as a listener. Check the title, author, episode order, artwork, descriptions, explicit labels, playback, and links. Publish a correction at the feed source rather than editing two catalogs independently whenever possible.
- Document ownership and recovery. Save the RSS URL, account email, redirect instructions, backup artwork, and administrator access. This prevents a lost login or host change from breaking both listings.
Analytics: why the numbers cannot be added together
Spotify’s 30-second play definition
On June 11, 2026, Spotify announced that a play would count when an episode was watched or listened to for at least 30 seconds. Spotify described this as alignment with the Podcast Plays definition announced by the Alliance for Measurement in Podcasting. The announcement also introduced first-time versus returning audience views, episode performance comparisons against a show’s catalog, an engagement tab, and historical information reaching back to a creator’s first day on Spotify.
The exact statement from Spotify’s announcement is: “Starting today, play counts will now reflect the number of times an episode was watched or listened to for at least thirty seconds.” This is Spotify’s platform metric definition, not a universal measurement rule for every podcast service.

A practical cross-platform reporting method
- Report Spotify plays and Apple listener figures in separate columns.
- Label the platform, date range, episode, and metric definition for every number.
- Use trends within each dashboard for programming decisions, such as retention or returning listeners.
- Do not add Spotify and Apple totals as if they represented one deduplicated audience.
- Keep a note when Spotify changes a metric definition, because a series break can look like audience growth or decline.
Monetization: eligibility is more important than the brand name
Spotify Partner Program
Spotify lists the Spotify Partner Program as a route to advertising revenue and, for eligible video episodes, premium video revenue. Its current eligibility page, accessed October 13, 2026, states that applicants need all of the following:
- Residence in an eligible market.
- Hosting on Spotify for Creators.
- At least 1,000 Spotify audience members during the prior 30 days.
- At least 2,000 Spotify consumption hours during the prior 30 days.
- At least three published episodes.
The support material lists the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia as program markets. These requirements apply to qualifying shows in eligible markets and can change. Open the Monetization page inside your account to see the current country, format, and account-specific decision before choosing Spotify hosting solely for this reason.
Spotify subscriptions and the published-window discrepancy
Spotify also offers subscriptions through its creator service in eligible markets. Spotify’s product page, accessed October 13, 2026, states at least two published episodes and 100 unique Spotify listeners in the prior 60 days. Linked support material gives a 30-day listener window instead. Because Spotify’s own pages differ, do not treat either period as universal. Use the eligibility panel in the creator dashboard for the show-specific requirement that applies at the time you apply.

External memberships and host-read deals
Spotify says some external membership services, including Patreon, Substack, and Supporting Cast, can connect paid podcast content to Spotify for eligible integrations. Spotify also says those integrations may be available regardless of the hosting platform. Check whether your show and membership service qualify before promising members access inside Spotify.
Spotify distinguishes a creator’s own baked-in host-read deals from Spotify-served advertising. Revenue from a direct deal should not be described as revenue from the Partner Program or from Spotify’s ad inventory.
Apple Podcasts subscriptions
Apple lets creators add a subscription during show setup in Apple Podcasts Connect. You can configure pricing and free-trial settings, but Apple requires review and subscriber audio before the subscription becomes available. The sources available here do not establish current Apple creator fees, payout terms, or a directly comparable revenue share against Spotify. A claim that one platform pays more would require current terms for the same country, format, price, and sales scenario.

Apple discovery: catalog submission is not the same as a direct RSS follow
A show submitted to Apple’s catalog can be searchable and distributed to services that reference the catalog, subject to the creator’s availability settings. For creators who want Apple search and catalog discovery, completing submission through Apple Podcasts Connect or a participating hosting provider is the relevant path.

That direct RSS follow does not qualify for editorial featuring. Apple says the listener’s Library will not show promotional artwork, ratings, reviews, subscriptions, channels, or Apple Podcasts Analytics for a direct RSS follow. Direct RSS access is therefore a useful technical fallback, but it is not equivalent to a catalog listing.
Video changes the comparison
Spotify for Creators supports audio and video uploads, and Spotify’s 2026 analytics announcement describes plays across episodes that are watched or listened to. Spotify’s monetization material describes premium video revenue in selected markets. A video-first creator should therefore verify four separate questions in the current account interface: where video can be uploaded, which destinations receive it, which analytics apply to watched episodes, and whether video monetization is available in the creator’s country.
Apple’s RSS workflow is centered on feed validation and catalog distribution. Do not assume that an audio workflow, a video upload, or a third-party host’s announced rollout is available everywhere at the same time. Confirm the current support for your chosen format before promising a video release schedule.
Which setup fits your situation?
New creator seeking the fewest moving parts
Start with Spotify for Creators if free integrated hosting and Spotify tools are the main priorities. Submit the resulting show to Apple as well if Apple listeners matter. This gives you a simple production home without making the show invisible to the other catalog.

Best Value
Creator targeting Spotify monetization
Check the current Monetization panel for market, hosting, episode, audience, and consumption requirements. If your country or hosting arrangement is not eligible, the presence of a Spotify listing alone does not unlock the Partner Program.
Creator with an existing paid membership
Check whether Spotify supports an integration for your membership provider and show. Decide whether members need access inside Spotify or whether your existing delivery method is sufficient. Keep the membership entitlement and the public RSS feed documented separately.
Video-first creator
Compare the current upload, distribution, analytics, advertising, and subscriber workflows rather than choosing based on audio catalog size. Spotify documents watched-or-listened play reporting and selected-market premium video monetization, but availability is account and country dependent.
Established creator seeking maximum optionality
Consider an independent RSS host, submit the feed to both catalogs, and evaluate each destination’s analytics independently. This separates the feed infrastructure from the listening apps and makes a future platform change less disruptive.
Requirements and pitfalls to check before launch
Feed and metadata checks
- The RSS feed is publicly addressable without a login.
- The feed is valid RSS 2.0 and contains at least one playable episode.
- Episode enclosure URLs remain stable and return the correct media type.
- Artwork, title, author, language, category, descriptions, and explicit-content labels are consistent.
- You know whether feed metadata will override values entered in Apple Podcasts Connect.
- You retain access to the host account and can perform a redirect if the host changes.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a catalog instead of a host: Apple Podcasts can list an RSS-hosted show; it does not have to be the place where the media file is stored.
- Assuming one metric is universal: Spotify’s 30-second play rule does not make its figures interchangeable with Apple insights.
- Counting on monetization before checking eligibility: Country, hosting, episode count, audience, and consumption thresholds all matter.
- Using direct RSS as a substitute for Apple submission: Direct follows lack catalog and analytics features described by Apple.
- Moving hosts without a redirect plan: Changing the feed URL without a controlled migration can strand subscribers and directory listings.
- Assuming an announced feature is globally available: Video, subscriptions, integrations, and monetization can be limited by country or account.
What is known about cost and commercial terms
Spotify advertises free hosting through Spotify for Creators. The material used for this comparison does not establish a complete price schedule for every hosting option, nor does it establish Apple’s current creator fees or payout terms. Apple subscription pricing and free-trial settings are configurable in Connect, but the available documentation is not enough to calculate a reliable net-revenue comparison.
For a real budget decision, list the costs of your chosen RSS host, production tools, payment or membership service, and any revenue-sharing terms shown in your current account. Do not infer a platform’s financial advantage from free hosting alone: storage, production, editing, marketing, and subscriber-delivery costs may sit elsewhere.
Final decision framework
Choose Spotify for Creators when free integrated hosting, Spotify analytics, engagement features, or Spotify video and monetization tools are central to your plan and your account is eligible. Choose Apple Podcasts Connect when Apple catalog discovery, Apple listener insights, or Apple Podcasts subscriptions are central. Choose both catalogs when you want broad listener access; the services are designed to coexist through RSS distribution.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The most defensible setup for many creators is an RSS feed you control, submitted to both services, with platform-specific reporting and eligibility checks. That approach avoids treating Spotify and Apple as mutually exclusive, preserves distribution options, and lets your format, market, workflow, and business model determine the role each platform plays.
