Spotflux is no longer available. The VPN shut down at the end of August 2017, and archived reviews describe a product that is not maintained today. Do not download old Spotflux installers or trust mirror copies with your traffic. This review explains what Spotflux was, what its historical tests found, and how to choose a maintained replacement.
Is Spotflux still available?
No. TechRadar’s update says Spotflux closed at the end of August 2017, while ProPrivacy’s archived page records that the service was no longer operational. There is no current Spotflux service to subscribe to, no supported client to install, and no active company release channel that can provide security fixes.

That distinction matters because search results can make an abandoned application look current. A download page, software archive, forum attachment, or video that still contains a Spotflux installer does not restore the service. Even if an old client opens, its servers, certificates, payment systems, blocking lists, and privacy controls may no longer function as intended.

What “closed” means for a VPN
A VPN client is only one part of the system. The provider must operate gateway servers, authenticate accounts, issue and revoke certificates, maintain DNS handling, update blocklists, patch the applications, and respond to operating-system changes. Once the provider shuts down, those components become unmaintained. A client that connects to an unexpected endpoint, fails open when a tunnel drops, or leaves old network settings behind can create more risk than using no VPN at all.

What Spotflux was
Spotflux launched in 2012 as a browser and desktop VPN designed around a simple download-and-toggle workflow. TechCrunch’s 5 March 2012 launch report identified Dean Mekkawy and Chris Naegelin as the founders and reported that the company had raised $1 million in seed funding. The product later offered Windows and macOS clients alongside mobile applications, with free and paid tiers.
The central promise was ease of use rather than detailed control. A user installed the client, switched protection on, and allowed Spotflux to route traffic through its VPN. The service also marketed filtering features that went beyond basic tunneling: tracker blocking, advertising blocking, phishing protection, malware blocking, and mobile data compression.
Historical plans and prices
The figures below are historical prices recorded by TechRadar in 2017. They are not current offers and should not be used as a guide to what a working Spotflux subscription would cost today.
| Plan or term | Historical price | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| One month | $4.99 | Price recorded by TechRadar in its 2017 review period. |
| Mobile-only annual plan | $29.99 | Annual mobile price recorded by TechRadar in 2017. |
| Premium annual plan | $37.99 | Annual Premium price recorded by TechRadar in 2017. |
| Premium trial | Three days | A three-day trial was available during the period reviewed by TechRadar. |
Those prices describe a discontinued commercial product, not an available deal. Any page asking for payment in Spotflux’s name should be treated as unrelated until independently verified.
How Spotflux performed in archived testing
TechRadar’s 2017 measurements found a 19% increase in latency and 7% reductions in both download and upload speed. In practical terms, a connection could remain usable for browsing and ordinary streaming while feeling slower for interactive work, gaming, large uploads, or video calls. The figures are historical measurements under the reviewer’s test conditions, not a guarantee of how every user experienced the service.

The same review described Spotflux as having very few servers and limited configuration. A small network gives users fewer opportunities to avoid a distant or congested location. TechRadar also reported that speeds could occasionally fall to an unusable crawl. That variability is more significant than an average percentage: a VPN that is normally acceptable but intermittently unusable can disrupt meetings, downloads, and access to sites that apply timeouts.
“Spotflux is a solid service which is extremely easy to use and offers some neat extras like malware protection, but servers are thin on the ground, and performance can be variable.”

Where the extras helped
- Tracker blocking: reduced some third-party tracking requests in the client’s filtering system.
- Advertising blocking: attempted to remove advertising requests before they reached the device.
- Phishing and malware blocking: added URL and content filtering beyond encryption alone.
- Mobile data compression: could reduce the amount of data transferred on supported mobile connections.
These were convenience and filtering functions, not substitutes for endpoint security, browser protection, software updates, or careful clicking. A VPN cannot make a malicious file safe after it has been downloaded, and a blocklist cannot guarantee that every newly created phishing domain is recognized.
Was Spotflux safe?
There is no responsible way to call the current product safe because the service has been discontinued. The more precise answer is that archived reviews identified privacy and reliability concerns even when Spotflux was operating, and those concerns cannot be fixed now by a normal product update.
Advertising and tracking in the free tier
ProPrivacy reported that the free tier could use cookies, JavaScript, and web beacons for targeted advertising. That is important because users often choose a VPN specifically to reduce tracking. A free plan that supports targeted advertising may still provide a tunnel, but it does not offer the same privacy model as a service that clearly minimizes data collection and explains how it funds operations.

DNS and WebRTC leaks
ProPrivacy’s archived tests found DNS leaks on Windows and WebRTC leaks on Windows and Android. A DNS leak can expose the domains a device looks up to the internet service provider or another DNS operator outside the VPN tunnel. A WebRTC leak can reveal network addresses through browser real-time communication features. These findings belong to archived tests, not a current live service, but they show why a VPN’s marketing label is not enough: leak protection must be tested on each operating system and browser configuration.

ProPrivacy’s archived Windows-client review also noted the absence of a robust kill switch and mature leak protection. A kill switch is intended to block traffic when the VPN connection drops instead of silently sending traffic over the normal connection. Without dependable fail-closed behavior, a brief tunnel failure can expose traffic even while the application still appears open.
Operating systems, browsers, protocols, and threat techniques have changed since 2017. An old security assessment cannot certify a present-day client, and an old client cannot be assumed to meet current requirements such as IPv6 handling, automatic DNS protection, secure protocol negotiation, or application-level firewall rules.
Can you download Spotflux now?
You may encounter archived installers, but downloading one is not a sensible way to obtain a VPN. The file may be modified, bundled with unwanted software, signed with an expired or unverifiable certificate, or configured to contact an endpoint that no longer belongs to the original operator. Even an untouched installer would deploy software that has not received security updates for years.
If Spotflux is already installed
- Disconnect it. Turn off the VPN and disable any automatic-start option so it cannot alter traffic unexpectedly.
- Record your normal network settings. Note the active Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter, DNS mode, proxy settings, and whether a virtual network adapter appears in the operating-system network list.
- Uninstall through the operating system. On Windows, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select Spotflux, and choose Uninstall. On macOS, remove the application using its supplied uninstaller if present, then check System Settings > VPN for an old configuration.
- Remove leftover VPN profiles. Delete Spotflux configurations from the operating system’s VPN or network settings, but do not remove unrelated work or school profiles.
- Check DNS and proxy settings. Return the adapter to automatic DNS unless you intentionally use another provider, and clear any proxy entry that Spotflux created.
- Restart and test. Reboot the device, confirm that ordinary websites load, and check that your DNS, public address, and WebRTC behavior match the privacy settings you intend to use.
- Scan the installer and system. If the software came from an unofficial mirror or was installed recently, run a current security scan and review newly installed extensions and applications.
If uninstalling leaves the device without connectivity, use the operating system’s network reset or adapter-repair procedure, then recreate only the VPN profile belonging to a maintained provider. Avoid downloading another copy of the old Spotflux client to repair the problem.

What happened to Spotflux VPN?
Spotflux operated as a small, convenience-focused VPN service after its 2012 launch, offering free and paid access across desktop and mobile platforms. By the end of August 2017, the company had closed the service. Publicly accessible archived coverage now serves as a historical record rather than a support channel.
The shutdown explains why current searches can produce contradictory results. Old reviews preserve feature lists, prices, screenshots, and speed tests; software directories may preserve the application file; and cached pages can retain subscription language. None of those artifacts demonstrate that the provider still operates gateways or accepts customers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the best Spotflux alternative
The best replacement is not the VPN with the closest-looking interface. It is a maintained service whose operator can demonstrate current security practices, transparent ownership, reliable support, and a clear way to leave. Use the following checks before installing anything.
1. Confirm active support
- Look for a current release history for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS versions you actually use.
- Check that the provider publishes support documentation with dates and responds to security issues.
- Verify that subscription, refund, and cancellation pages are live and written for your country.
2. Demand independent security evidence
Prefer providers that publish independent audits of infrastructure, applications, or no-logging claims. Read the scope and date: an audit of a website’s controls is not automatically an audit of the desktop client, and a one-time assessment does not prove that every future release is secure.
3. Test for leaks yourself
After installation, connect the VPN and check DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC behavior from each device and browser you use. Repeat the checks after changing networks, waking the device from sleep, and switching servers. Enable the provider’s kill switch, then verify that traffic stops when the VPN process or tunnel is interrupted.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
4. Evaluate coverage and consistency
Compare the number and geographic spread of server locations, but do not treat a large headline number as a performance guarantee. A nearby, lightly loaded server is usually more useful than a distant location list. Test at the times you work, stream, or play games, and check whether speeds remain consistent after reconnecting.
5. Check device and protocol support
Make sure the service supports every platform you need, including routers or streaming devices if relevant. Confirm that it offers modern, actively maintained protocols, automatic updates, IPv6 handling, and a kill switch that works on your operating system rather than only on one platform.
6. Read the logging policy in context
A “no logs” headline is incomplete without definitions. Identify whether the provider retains connection timestamps, bandwidth totals, source addresses, crash data, payment details, or diagnostic identifiers. Consider where the company is incorporated, which laws apply, and whether technical controls or an audit support the written policy.
Recommended Free Tools
7. Understand the price and exit terms
Check the renewal price rather than only the introductory rate. Confirm the billing interval, refund window, accepted payment methods, simultaneous-device limit, and the exact cancellation path. A maintained VPN should let you cancel without relying on an abandoned app or an inaccessible support address.
Common mistakes when replacing an abandoned VPN
- Installing from a mirror: an archive is not an official distribution channel and may serve a tampered file.
- Assuming encryption equals anonymity: a VPN can protect traffic between your device and its server while the provider still sees account and connection data described in its policy.
- Leaving two VPN clients active: overlapping virtual adapters and kill switches can block traffic or create routing leaks.
- Ignoring browser behavior: WebRTC, extensions, DNS-over-HTTPS, and IPv6 can change what is exposed outside the tunnel.
- Using a free replacement without reading its business model: advertising, data collection, bandwidth limits, and device restrictions may be the real cost.
- Skipping an outage plan: decide whether the kill switch should block all traffic or whether selected applications may continue outside the VPN.
Spotflux: historical strengths and weaknesses at a glance
| Area | What archived coverage reported | How to interpret it today |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Very simple interface and setup. | Ease of use was a historical strength, but simplicity does not compensate for an unsupported service. |
| Filtering | Tracker, advertising, phishing, and malware blocking, plus mobile data compression. | Useful extras at the time; they were never a replacement for device security or a maintained VPN. |
| Speed | 19% higher latency and 7% lower download and upload speeds in TechRadar’s 2017 tests. | Archived measurements only; they cannot predict performance from a current endpoint. |
| Network | Very few servers and variable performance, including occasional unusable slowdowns. | Indicates limited historical coverage and consistency. |
| Privacy | ProPrivacy reported targeted-advertising mechanisms in the free tier and archived DNS/WebRTC leaks. | Historical warnings that reinforce the need for current, independent leak testing. |
| Maintenance | Service closed at the end of August 2017. | The decisive present-day issue: there is no supported Spotflux product. |
Verdict
Spotflux was an approachable VPN with useful blocking features, but its small network, inconsistent speeds, historical leak findings, and limited safeguards already constrained it. Its shutdown at the end of August 2017 makes the buying decision straightforward: do not download, subscribe to, or rely on Spotflux now. Remove old clients and profiles, then select a maintained VPN whose current audits, leak protection, support status, coverage, logging policy, and cancellation terms you can verify.
