Buying shares in a listed team company gives you a liquid market price and corporate disclosures, yet usually little direct control and significant single-team risk. Buying a sports ETF gives you a diversified basket of companies tied to themes such as gaming, esports, sports betting or iGaming—not ownership or control of a team.
The Green Bay Packers’ stock offering is a separate civic model. The Packers report 5,204,625 shares held by 538,967 stockholders on their 2026 shareholder page, while stating that none receives a dividend on the initial investment. Treat those shares as fan ownership, not as an ordinary appreciating equity.

Four different meanings of “owning sports”
The phrase “I want to invest in a sports team” can describe four legally and economically different purchases. Separating them first prevents the most common mistake: assuming every sports-related security represents a slice of a team.

| Route | What the holder owns | Control | Liquidity | Main exposure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private or controlling team stake | An ownership interest in the team or its holding company | Potentially substantial, depending on voting rights and league approval | Usually illiquid; sales are episodic | One team, its league and its local market |
| Listed team-company shares | Shares in a public company connected to a team | Usually limited unless the holder is a controlling shareholder | Trades through a securities market | One team company plus its corporate structure |
| Fan or community shares | A special civic instrument, such as the Packers’ offering | Fan-oriented ownership rather than ordinary financial control | Not a conventional continuously traded security | The organization’s community and ownership program |
| Sports ETF | Units in a fund that owns a portfolio of securities | Fund-level rights, not team governance | ETF units trade through securities markets | A theme such as gaming, esports, betting or iGaming |
These categories can overlap in a corporate chart, but they do not deliver the same rights. A listed company may own or operate a team, while an ETF may own shares of companies that sell games or betting technology. Neither fact automatically gives an ETF investor a vote at the team.

What control means in practice
Private and controlling ownership
A controlling owner can influence board appointments, senior management, budgets, venue decisions and long-term strategy, subject to the league’s rules and the laws of the relevant jurisdiction. A non-controlling private investor may receive economic participation without being able to direct those decisions. The exact split between economic ownership and voting power matters more than the headline percentage.
Private ownership is also a concentrated commitment. Your result depends on one organization’s league economics, market, venue, media arrangements, sponsorship pipeline and operating decisions. A sale normally requires a negotiated transaction, buyer due diligence and any approvals required by the league or jurisdiction. There is no continuously quoted price that guarantees an exit.
Public shareholders
Public-company ownership normally gives voting and economic rights defined by the company’s share class and filings. A small public shareholder can vote on matters placed before shareholders and receive the company’s disclosures, but cannot run the team. Control may be concentrated in another holder or group.
Manchester United’s investor FAQ provides a clear example. It says Manchester United plc is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker MANU. The same FAQ states that, as of 18 December 2024, the Glazer family controlled 67.9% of voting rights and INEOS Limited held 28.9%. Those dated voting figures illustrate why a publicly traded team company can still be controlled by a small group: buying a few shares does not transfer operational authority.
ETF investors
An ETF holder owns units of the fund, not the individual companies in the portfolio directly and not a sports team. The fund exercises any shareholder rights in its holdings under its own policies. Your economic result follows the value and distributions of the portfolio, after fund expenses and any tracking or management effects. You do not receive a team board seat merely because the ETF owns a security connected to sports.
Why liquidity is a decisive difference
Listed shares and ETF units have market prices and can generally be bought or sold during the exchange’s trading session, subject to market conditions, brokerage access and local rules. A market price is not a promise that you will receive a fair estimate of the underlying team’s value. It can move because of company results, investor sentiment, interest rates, dilution, corporate actions or changes in the expected value of media and sponsorship rights.
A private stake has no equivalent order book. A transaction may take months or years, and the final price is negotiated. Valuation evidence is less frequent and less transparent than the filings and daily quotations available for a listed security.

Packers shares are different again. The Green Bay Packers’ official shareholder page calls the program an ownership offering and reports that no holder receives a dividend on the initial investment. The shares are not a conventional continuously traded security, so an investor should not assume that a public quotation or an easy resale market exists.
How a team company makes money
Owning a listed team company is an investment in its complete business model, not simply in wins and losses. The Atlanta Braves’ SEC filing identifies several revenue streams:
- Ticket sales
- Concessions
- Local broadcasting rights
- Advertising and sponsorships
- Suites and premium seats
- Retail and licensing
- Shared Major League Baseball broadcasting and licensing streams
This mix explains why sporting performance is only one input. Attendance, venue spending, local media negotiations, sponsorship demand, premium seating and league-wide distributions can each affect results. A team company can also have holding-company debt, related businesses or a share structure that changes the relationship between the stock price and the team’s underlying value.
Publicly traded team examples
Manchester United plc (MANU)
Manchester United plc is a publicly listed company whose shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange under MANU, according to the club’s investor FAQ. That listing supplies market liquidity and periodic corporate reporting. It does not mean every shareholder controls football operations.
Recommended Free Tools
The ownership figures in the same FAQ are explicitly dated 18 December 2024: the Glazer family controlled 67.9% of voting rights and INEOS Limited held 28.9%. Because voting control is concentrated, a minority investor should analyze the company as a public security with a controlling shareholder, not as a democratic fan vote. Read the current filing for the share classes, voting arrangements, dilution and any changes after that date before trading.
Atlanta Braves Holdings and Liberty Media
The Braves provide a different lesson in corporate structure. The SEC filing covering the Braves split-off states that Atlanta Braves Holdings and Liberty Media became separate publicly traded companies after the transaction. It also says that, after the later exchange, neither company retained continuing stock ownership—beneficial or otherwise—in the other.
That language matters because a “team stock” can be created, separated or reorganized through a holding-company transaction. An investor must identify the legal issuer, the assets assigned to it and the rights attached to its share class. A stock associated with a team is not automatically a direct certificate representing the stadium, the league franchise or every related business.

Why this is not an exhaustive list
The examples above show two public-company structures, not a complete worldwide directory. Team listings, ownership percentages, tickers and corporate arrangements can change. Before acting, confirm the current exchange listing, issuer filings, voting structure and whether the team is held directly or through a parent company.
Green Bay Packers shares: a civic instrument, not a normal equity
The Packers’ official 2026 shareholder page reports 5,204,625 shares held by 538,967 stockholders. It lists stock sales in 1923, 1935, 1950, 1997, 2011 and 2022. Most importantly, the page states that “none of whom receives any dividend on the initial investment.”
That statement changes the investment analysis. Ordinary equity analysis often starts with potential appreciation, dividends, voting power and liquidity. The Packers’ offering should instead be assessed as a fan and community participation program with no dividend on the initial investment and no conventional continuous trading market. Purchasing it may satisfy a civic or personal goal, but it should not be presented as a standard way to compound capital.
The share count and holder count also should not be read as a market capitalization. Without a continuously quoted market price and ordinary resale mechanism, multiplying the number of shares by an assumed price would create a misleading valuation. Use the organization’s current offering terms for any future issuance rather than treating historical offerings as a standing investment product.
What sports ETFs actually hold
ESPO: gaming and esports exposure
VanEck describes ESPO as seeking to replicate the MVIS Global Video Gaming and eSports Index. The listed examples include Tencent, Nintendo, Electronic Arts, Take-Two and Roblox. Those are gaming and interactive-entertainment companies; this portfolio description is not a claim that the fund owns a professional sports team.
ESPO therefore gives thematic exposure to the revenues, margins, valuations and currencies of the companies in its index. A game publisher can benefit from a successful release without owning a stadium or a league franchise. Conversely, a sports team can have strong ticket or media revenue while ESPO’s holdings face a weak game cycle. Check the current index methodology, holdings, geographic mix, currency exposure and expense information before purchase because an index and its constituents can change.
BETZ: sports betting and iGaming exposure
Roundhill describes BETZ as the Sports Betting & iGaming ETF. Its fund page says that, effective 22 June 2026, the objective changed to an actively managed fund investing in sports-betting and iGaming companies. As of the current date, that change is in effect; the fund should not be described as a passive basket using only its pre-change index description.

BETZ is a sector basket, not a portfolio of teams. Its risks include the business performance of betting and iGaming companies, gambling regulation, licensing requirements, jurisdictional limits, competition and changes in consumer behavior. The fund’s management style, holdings, fees, leverage and concentration should be verified in its current prospectus and holdings file.
Does an ETF own sports teams?
The two examples above do not establish direct team ownership: ESPO is described through gaming and esports companies, while BETZ invests in sports-betting and iGaming companies. An ETF could hold a listed company that has a team-related business, but that would still give you fund units and fund-level rights rather than direct team governance. Look through the ETF’s current holdings and legal structure instead of relying on the word “sports” in its name.

How to choose the route that matches your goal
If your goal is control
Only a sufficiently large private or public-company stake can provide meaningful governance influence. Start with voting rights rather than the number of shares. Confirm whether another shareholder controls the votes, whether different share classes exist and what approvals the league requires. A small position in MANU, for example, does not override the voting control disclosed for the Glazer family and INEOS as of 18 December 2024.
If your goal is a liquid market position
A listed team company or ETF is more compatible with a brokerage account than a private stake or Packers offering. Liquidity does not remove risk: prices can fall, spreads can widen and a market quote can diverge from your estimate of team value. Decide in advance how much concentration you can tolerate and what event would make you sell.
If your goal is broad sports-related exposure
An ETF can spread a position across companies, but choose the theme precisely. ESPO is described around video gaming and esports. BETZ is described around sports betting and iGaming and, from 22 June 2026, an actively managed strategy. Neither should be substituted for direct team ownership in a portfolio plan.
If your goal is fan participation
The Packers’ program is the clearest example in the evidence. Its official page reports the historical offering years, the 2026 share and holder counts, and no dividend on the initial investment. That profile fits a civic or sentimental objective, not a conventional income or appreciation objective.
A practical due-diligence checklist
- Identify the legal issuer. Determine whether you are buying a team company, a parent company, a fund or a special fan instrument.
- Read the current filing or prospectus. Confirm voting rights, share classes, debt, dilution, related-party arrangements and the stated investment objective.
- Separate team operations from corporate structure. For a team company, list the revenue streams, other assets and obligations. The Braves filing, for example, identifies tickets, concessions, local broadcasting, advertising, sponsorships, premium seating, retail, licensing and shared MLB streams.
- Check liquidity and exit rules. A listed quotation, an episodic private sale and a fan offering are three different exit situations.
- Measure concentration. A single team or company can dominate results. An ETF reduces single-issuer concentration but adds sector, geography and currency exposure.
- Check distributions and costs. Verify dividends, fund expense ratios, leverage, dilution and transaction costs. Do not assume that a sports label implies income.
- Review regulation. Betting and iGaming securities carry gambling and licensing exposure. Team ownership is also shaped by league rules and jurisdiction.
- Verify dates. Ownership percentages, ETF objectives, holdings and fees can change. Keep the date attached to every figure you use.
How to buy a listed team share or ETF without confusing the two
- Choose the exposure first. Decide whether you want one team company, gaming and esports, sports betting and iGaming, or fan participation. Do not begin with a ticker and infer the exposure afterward.
- Confirm the symbol and issuer. For Manchester United plc, the investor FAQ identifies MANU on the New York Stock Exchange. For any other security, use the current exchange and issuer documents because symbols and structures can change.
- Read the latest documents. Check voting control, business segments, fund objective, holdings, fees, leverage and risk factors.
- Check market access. Your broker, country and account type determine whether you can trade the security and in which currency. Market hours and settlement rules also apply.
- Set a position limit. A team share is concentrated; an ETF is diversified only within its stated theme. Size the position so one company, league or regulatory change cannot overwhelm your portfolio.
- Use an order type you understand. A market order prioritizes execution, while a limit order sets a maximum purchase or minimum sale price. Review the quote, spread and estimated costs before submitting.
- Recheck after purchase. Monitor filings, ownership changes, ETF rebalances, management changes and objective amendments. The BETZ change effective 22 June 2026 demonstrates why an old description can become inaccurate.
Risks that are easy to underestimate
Concentration and valuation gaps
A single-team share can behave differently from the team’s perceived brand value. The market prices the public company, including its debt, cash, other assets, share classes and expected future earnings. Private transactions are even less frequent, so a recent deal may not represent a current exit price.

Control risk
A public listing does not guarantee dispersed ownership. The dated Manchester United figures show how a controlling shareholder can retain most voting power while the stock remains publicly traded. Read voting rights, not just the percentage of economic interest.
Regulatory and jurisdiction risk
Sports betting and iGaming companies depend on licensing and gambling rules that differ by jurisdiction. Team investments are subject to league rules and local law. A regulatory change can affect a company or fund even when sporting demand remains strong.
Corporate-action risk
The Braves and Liberty Media split-off shows that a team-related investment can be reorganized. When companies separate or exchange interests, the assets, liabilities and ownership relationships attached to a ticker can change. Follow the transaction documents and compare the post-transaction issuer with the security you originally analyzed.
Theme drift
ETF names are not permanent descriptions of holdings. BETZ’s move to an actively managed sports-betting and iGaming strategy effective 22 June 2026 is a concrete reminder to read the current objective. ESPO’s index-based gaming and esports mandate likewise should not be treated as direct team ownership.
What the sports-rights market activity figure does—and does not—tell you
Deloitte’s 2025 outlook reports that football accounted for 50% of transactions involving sports rightsholders by deal volume in 2024. That is an activity statistic: it describes where transactions occurred, not what an investor earned. It is not a forecast of team values, public-share returns or ETF performance.
Bottom line
Choose ownership when governance and a concentrated, long-term commitment are the point; choose a listed team company when you want a market-traded security tied to one organization; choose an ETF when you want a diversified theme such as gaming, esports, betting or iGaming. The Packers’ shares occupy a fourth category: a non-dividend fan ownership program rather than a normal appreciating equity. In every case, identify the issuer, voting rights, liquidity, business exposure, fees and current date before treating a sports-related purchase as an investment.
