Sports Illustrated Union Says It’s “Horrified” by Publication of AI-Generated Writers

The Sports Illustrated Union said it was “horrified” after Futurism reported in November 2023 that Sports Illustrated’s site had carried articles attributed to apparently fabricated writers and profiles that may have been generated with artificial intelligence. The union demanded answers from The Arena Group, then SI’s operator, but the allegations were disputed: Arena said the articles were licensed from AdVon Commerce and that AdVon had assured it they were written and edited by humans.

What Futurism reported

Futurism published its initial report on November 27, 2023. Its follow-up the next day described the SI Union as “horrified” and quoted the union demanding “answers and transparency from Arena Group management about what exactly has been published under the SI name.”

Futurism’s reporting and sources presented the disputed material as involving AI-generated writing, fabricated bylines and invented author biographies. Those are reported allegations, not a judicial finding or an independently adjudicated conclusion. The union itself used conditional language, saying that if true, the practices violated its beliefs about journalism.

What the SI Union said

In its official statement dated November 29, 2023, the union wrote: “We, the workers of the SI Union, remain outraged over reporting that Sports Illustrated’s operator, The Arena Group, published AI-generated content with fabricated bylines and writer profiles under SI’s name.” The statement also said Arena’s response had not adequately explained what happened and that management had not personally taken accountability. Those points describe the union’s assertions.

Speaking to Futurism on November 28, the union said: “We demand the company commit to adhering to basic journalistic standards, including not publishing computer-written stories by fake people.” It characterized SI staff as having maintained high ethical standards “for nearly 70 years”; that is the union’s description, not a measured statistic.

What the union demanded

The union’s requested remedies focused on disclosure, oversight and a commitment about future work:

  • An explanation: Arena should explain how the posts were published and why it partnered with AdVon Commerce.
  • A dated record: The union requested a “timeline with dates” covering the AdVon partnership, management’s awareness of concerns, the investigation, Futurism’s contact, any takedown of content and termination of the AdVon contract. The request does not establish that every listed event occurred as described.
  • Union participation: A union representative should be included in the internal investigation.
  • A human-work guarantee: Arena should publicly guarantee that future SI editorial work would be performed by humans and commit that protection in the next union contract.
  • Byline action: The union warned that it could withhold bylines if management did not meet its demands.

How the competing accounts differ

Source Account Status
Futurism, Nov. 27–28, 2023 Reported articles and writer profiles that appeared fabricated or AI-generated; cited sources who said the stories themselves were AI-generated. Investigative reporting and source allegations; not an adjudicated finding.
Sports Illustrated Union, Nov. 28–29, 2023 Expressed alarm about alleged AI-generated content, fabricated bylines and profiles; demanded transparency and a human-only editorial commitment. The union’s public claims and demands.
The Arena Group, as reported by Sports Business Journal on Nov. 28, 2023 Said the pieces were licensed from AdVon, which had assured Arena they were written and edited by humans. Arena also said some stories used pen names or pseudonyms to protect author privacy. Arena’s reported response; it disputed that the articles themselves were AI-generated.

Arena’s explanation does not independently establish who wrote the disputed articles. The central authorship question therefore remained contested in the contemporaneous accounts.

What happened to Sports Illustrated afterward

The Arena Group’s publishing license was revoked earlier in 2024 after a missed payment, according to the Associated Press. On March 18, 2024, Minute Media reached an agreement with Authentic Brands Group, which owns the Sports Illustrated brand, to take over SI’s print and digital publishing operations. Minute’s current company materials list Sports Illustrated among its content brands, and the SI terms page identifies Sports Publishing Solutions Inc. and affiliates as the service provider.

The change in publisher is a later business development, not evidence that the union’s requested remedies were adopted. The available statements do not establish whether the next union contract included a human-work guarantee, whether all demands were accepted, or what detailed AI policy currently governs SI editorial work.

What can—and cannot—be concluded

  • The controversy began with Futurism’s November 2023 reporting and prompted an immediate, highly critical response from the SI Union.
  • The union alleged that AI-generated material and fabricated identities appeared under the SI name.
  • Arena disputed that the stories were AI-generated and said AdVon had represented them as human-written and human-edited, while also citing pseudonyms.
  • No independently published study or central statistic establishes the scale of the disputed content in the sources cited here.
  • Later control by Minute Media confirms a change in publishing arrangements, but does not resolve the authorship dispute or document implementation of the union’s demands.
