Sports analytics FAQ: What the numbers can—and can’t—tell you

Sports analytics numbers are evidence for a defined question, not a complete verdict on a player, team or game. A box-score total records what happened; a rate or adjustment changes the comparison; an expected metric estimates what a model says should happen given selected inputs; and tracking data describes movement in unusual detail. Each can be useful, but only when you check the definition, sample, context, data coverage and uncertainty behind it.

The practical rule is simple: ask what the number was built to measure before asking what it means. The same player can look excellent by one measure and ordinary by another because the statistics use different inputs, denominators, time windows or assumptions.

What do sports analytics numbers actually tell you?

A statistic can describe an outcome, make a specific comparison fairer, estimate an average value, or help forecast future events. It cannot, by itself, provide a complete account of skill, intent, health, tactics or causation.

Phil Birnbaum’s Society for American Baseball Research guide defines sabermetrics as “the search for objective knowledge about baseball through analysis of the statistical record.” The important word is knowledge: analytics starts with a question, then tests evidence against that question. “Who produced more hits?” requires a different measure from “Who created more value per opportunity?” or “Who is most likely to perform well next month?”

Before comparing two numbers, identify six things:

  • The question the measure was designed to answer.
  • Its numerator, denominator and any contextual adjustments.
  • The sample size and time window.
  • Playing time, role, opponents, pace and game state.
  • The data provider, coverage period and missing or changed fields.
  • Uncertainty and, for forecasts, out-of-sample predictive performance.

If any of those are unclear, the number may still be interesting, but its conclusion should be narrow.

Four kinds of numbers—and the question each one answers

Type What it is Useful question Main caution
Observed statistic A recorded count, rate or result, such as hits, turnovers or shots made. What happened in the recorded games? It is noisy and may reflect opportunity, teammates or opponents.
Adjusted or rate statistic A count divided by exposure or transformed to account for a stated context. How did performance compare per possession, attempt or minute? The denominator and adjustment choices add assumptions and do not remove every confounder.
Expected-value metric A model-based estimate conditional on selected inputs, such as shot location or batted-ball characteristics. What outcome would be typical for events with these inputs? It is not the observed result and is not a complete measure of overall ability.
Tracking metric A measure derived from player or ball movement captured by cameras or sensors. How did movement, spacing or speed relate to an event? Collection, filtering and modeling can introduce additional errors and assumptions.

Observed results

A batting average, goals, rebounds or turnovers is a direct summary of recorded events. It is often the clearest answer to a historical question, but it does not automatically measure talent. A player with more points may have played more minutes or taken more shots. A team with more wins may have faced a weaker schedule.

Rates and adjustments

Rates put opportunity in the denominator: points per possession, rebounds per 36 minutes or strikeouts per nine innings answer narrower comparison questions than raw totals. Adjusted measures may account for pace, league environment or opponent strength. The adjustment can improve comparability for its intended use, yet it is not magic; changing the baseline or weighting can change the ranking.

Expected metrics

An expected metric estimates an average probability or value for events that share chosen inputs. MLB Statcast publishes expected measures tied to batted-ball characteristics. In the NBA glossary, expected field-goal percentage uses shot-tracking details. A shot may go in despite a low expected percentage, or miss despite a high one. Expected figures describe the quality of the opportunity under the model, while the box score records the actual outcome.

Tracking data

The NBA says cameras installed in arena catwalks and Second Spectrum software track every player and the basketball 25 times per second. That resolution can reveal speed, distance, spacing and defensive movement that a box score cannot. It still does not record intent directly, and every derived metric depends on how positions are detected, smoothed and interpreted.

Why can two stats tell different stories about a player?

Different statistics often answer different questions rather than contradicting one another. A high scoring total and an ordinary scoring rate can coexist when a player has a large role but average efficiency. A strong expected batting metric and a modest result can indicate good contact with unlucky outcomes, or a model that omits an important factor. A defensive tracking measure may reward positioning while a raw steal or block count reflects only events that happened to be recorded.

Look for differences in:

  • Definition: “assist,” “chance created” or “quality contact” may have provider-specific rules.
  • Denominator: per game, per possession, per minute and per attempt are not interchangeable.
  • Time window: a week, season, career or rolling average captures different mixtures of form and noise.
  • Population: league, era, competition level and opponent quality affect the baseline.
  • Model inputs: expected figures can use location, speed, angle, defender distance or other variables unavailable to a simpler statistic.
  • Data version: providers can revise event definitions, add fields or change algorithms.

Resolve the apparent conflict by stating the question precisely. “Who scored more?” and “Who converted chances more efficiently against comparable opponents?” are separate analyses.

How sample size changes what a number means

Individual plays and games contain substantial chance variation. A hot shooting week or a three-game scoring drought may be real, but it is not enough evidence on its own to establish a stable change in skill. Reliability differs by metric: some rates stabilize faster than others, and there is no universal sample-size cutoff for every sport or statistic.

When reading a short sample, ask:

  • How many attempts, possessions, minutes or opportunities produced the rate?
  • Is the measure especially sensitive to luck, such as a low-frequency event?
  • Does the player’s role or health differ from the longer baseline?
  • Is the apparent change large enough to matter practically, not merely statistically?
  • Does it persist in later games or in an independent sample?

FanGraphs’ explanation of sample size emphasizes stabilization in baseball; the broader 2024 review in Machine Learning likewise identifies small samples as a central evaluation challenge. Neither supports a single threshold that can be transferred unchanged to basketball, football, hockey or another metric.

Context and exposure can dominate raw totals

Totals combine performance with opportunity. More minutes, possessions, plate appearances, shots or defensive assignments create more chances to accumulate events. Pace changes the number of possessions in a game. A team protecting a lead may play differently from one chasing a deficit. Opponent quality, venue, weather, lineup combinations and tactical instructions can all influence the recorded result.

Use a rate or adjustment when the question calls for a fairer comparison, then state what it controls. A per-possession number can normalize pace; an opponent adjustment can change the baseline; neither proves that two players would produce identical results in identical roles. Selection effects also matter: the strongest players may receive harder assignments, and players selected for a role may already differ in ways the statistic cannot observe.

Data coverage and provenance set hard limits

Historical comparisons are only like-for-like when the underlying fields exist and retain the same definition. NBA.com’s FAQ says advanced statistics reach back to the 1996–97 season, while base statistics and digitized box scores reach back to 1946–47. The first season varies by category, so a long historical table may mix measures with different start dates.

MLB Baseball Savant lists Barrels, Hard-Hit Rate and Launch Angle Sweet-Spot data from 2016 to the present. Its Blasts, Fast Swing, Ideal Attack Angle and Squared-Up data run from 2023 to the present, with 2023 bat-tracking data partial. Those boundaries matter: a metric cannot support a 1990s comparison when its tracking series begins decades later.

Baseball Savant defines a hard-hit ball as one with exit velocity of at least 95 mph. That is a metric threshold, not a universal statement that every ball above it is valuable. The result also depends on how the provider records batted-ball events. Tracking systems can contain missed detections, classification errors and later revisions, as the 2022 Annual Review of Statistics and Its Application review explains.

When comparing seasons, leagues or providers, record the source, version if available, start date, missing fields and any partial season. A familiar metric name does not guarantee identical inputs.

Can stats predict what will happen next?

They can produce probabilistic forecasts, not guarantees. A prediction should be judged over many comparable cases, not by whether one game went as expected. A correct single-game forecast may be luck; one miss does not prove the model is useless.

Check how the forecast was tested

  1. Separate fitting from evaluation. Ask whether the model was tested on data not used to fit or tune it.
  2. Look for calibration. If events labeled 70% occur about seven times in ten over a large set, the probabilities are calibrated. Accuracy alone can hide overconfident probabilities.
  3. Inspect uncertainty. Ranges, prediction intervals or probability distributions show how much the model does not know.
  4. Match the conditions. A model trained in one era, league, rule set or tracking system may lose accuracy when those conditions change.
  5. Use a suitable baseline. Compare with a simple historical rate or bookmaker-free league baseline where appropriate, rather than assuming a complex model is automatically better.

The 2024 peer-reviewed review on methodology and evaluation in sports analytics highlights non-stationarity: tactics, equipment, rules, player populations and data systems change. Recalibration and monitoring are necessary when the environment moves.

A practical method for comparing two players, teams or metrics

  1. Write the decision question. Are you describing past output, estimating event quality, assigning credit or forecasting future performance?
  2. Fix the definition. Record the provider, formula, numerator, denominator, adjustment and version. Do not combine similarly named metrics without checking their definitions.
  3. Align exposure. Compare the same unit—possessions, minutes, attempts or opportunities—and explain role differences.
  4. Set the time window. Use the same games or seasons, and note injuries, trades, rule changes or partial tracking coverage.
  5. Audit the sample. Count opportunities and identify whether the event is common enough for a stable estimate.
  6. Control context deliberately. Consider opponents, pace, game state, venue and lineup. State which factors remain uncontrolled.
  7. Check provenance. Confirm historical availability, missingness and whether the provider changed its event or model definition.
  8. For forecasts, demand validation. Look for out-of-sample results, calibration and uncertainty, not just a persuasive chart.
  9. State the narrow conclusion. Say what the evidence supports and stop short of claims about total ability or causation that the measure cannot establish.

What the numbers cannot establish by themselves

  • They do not eliminate randomness. A short run can be unusually good or bad without a persistent talent change.
  • They do not prove causation from correlation. A team may win more when a player appears because of teammates, opponents, role or selection, not solely because of that player.
  • They do not capture every important contribution. Positioning, communication, fatigue, health and tactical instructions may be absent from the data or model.
  • They do not transfer automatically across contexts. A model calibrated in one league or era can misstate probabilities elsewhere.
  • They do not make providers interchangeable. Feature choices, filters, event definitions and algorithm updates can change values.
  • They do not make forecasts certain. A 70% probability still includes outcomes that occur roughly 30% of the time over repeated comparable cases.

Examples of careful interpretation

A baseball contact comparison

Suppose two hitters have similar batting averages, but one has a higher Hard-Hit Rate. The defensible conclusion is that the second hitter recorded a larger share of batted balls at or above MLB’s 95 mph threshold during the stated period. You still need plate appearances, launch angles, defensive positioning, park and opponent context before inferring future batting average or total offensive value. If one player’s series predates 2016, the listed Statcast comparison may not exist for both players.

An NBA shooting comparison

A player’s effective field-goal percentage incorporates the extra value of three-point makes, while expected field-goal percentage estimates shot success from tracking details under the glossary’s model. A gap between them describes results relative to modeled shot quality; it does not by itself prove sustainable shooting skill, defensive pressure, shot selection quality in every situation or coaching impact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A movement-based defensive claim

A tracking metric can show that a defender covered more distance or reached a location earlier. To claim superior defense, combine that measure with role, assignments, team scheme, opponent actions and the tracking system’s error characteristics. Movement is evidence about movement, not a complete record of communication or intent.

Reader checklist: six questions before trusting a number

  1. What exactly is measured? Identify the event and the unit.
  2. Against what baseline? League average, expected value, opponent-adjusted rate or something else?
  3. Over what period? Include season, games, partial coverage and rule or role changes.
  4. How much data? Count attempts, possessions, minutes or opportunities, not just calendar length.
  5. What is missing? Note untracked seasons, unavailable context, measurement error and provider revisions.
  6. How was any model checked? Look for held-out evaluation, calibration and uncertainty before treating a prediction as actionable.

Used this way, analytics is neither a scoreboard replacement nor a crystal ball. It is a disciplined way to connect a clearly stated sports question with evidence whose limits are visible.
