For Indian readers, broad-spectrum UVA and UVB coverage, applying enough, and choosing a formula you can use consistently matter alongside the SPF. If pigmentation is a concern, visible-light protection may also be relevant.
What SPF 30 and SPF 50 tell you—and what they do not
SPF primarily describes protection against UVB radiation, which is associated with sunburn. The World Health Organization explains that SPF does not specify UVA protection. Check separately for broad-spectrum coverage or other clear UVA protection information rather than assuming a higher SPF number means stronger protection across all types of sunlight. WHO guidance on UV protection
The Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists (IADVL) says SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays, particularly when spending several hours in strong sunshine. That is the figure stated in its 2022 patient information sheet; the primary sources cited here do not establish a directly comparable SPF 50 percentage. In any case, the two SPF labels should not be treated as a proportional measure of overall protection: UVA coverage and the amount applied also matter. IADVL sunscreen information sheet
Which SPF makes sense for Indian skin?
The Indian Sunscreen Forum’s 2025 consensus, developed by a panel of 14 dermatologists, recommends broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher in relevant contexts. IADVL’s patient guide likewise recommends SPF 30 or more. These recommendations make SPF 30 a supported baseline—not a guarantee that it is the right choice for every exposure or person. Indian skin is not one uniform category. Skin tone, conditions such as melasma, time outdoors, activity, climate, and tolerance of a particular formula all affect what is practical. SPF 50 is a reasonable higher-label option, especially when you expect substantial outdoor exposure, but the sources do not establish that every person with Indian skin needs SPF 50 or that SPF 30 is always enough.
| What to compare | SPF 30 | SPF 50 |
|---|---|---|
| UVB label level | Lower labeled SPF than 50; IADVL states that SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays under the conditions described in its 2022 guide. | Higher labeled SPF than 30; a directly comparable percentage is not stated in the cited primary sources. |
| UVA protection | Not specified by the SPF number; check for broad-spectrum or UVA coverage. | Not specified by the SPF number; check for broad-spectrum or UVA coverage. |
| Visible-light protection | Not conveyed by the SPF number. | Not conveyed by the SPF number. |
| Practical protection | Depends on using enough, following the label’s directions, reapplying as directed, and choosing a product suited to your activity and skin. | |
When visible-light protection may matter
For people managing melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, protection beyond UVB may be worth considering. The Indian Sunscreen Forum consensus discusses visible light as a contributor to hyperpigmentation and recommends protection covering visible light as well as UVA and UVB for relevant cases. A tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide is one option: the American Academy of Dermatology says iron-oxide tint can protect against visible light associated with dark spots. This is a consideration for pigmentation concerns, not a requirement for everyone. AAD sunscreen guidance

How to get the protection on the label
The Indian Sunscreen Forum consensus identifies 2 mg/cm² as the ideal application quantity for labeled SPF performance. In everyday use, apply generously and follow the product’s directions for coverage and reapplication. AAD’s US guidance gives at least one teaspoon as a practical amount for the face; it is a usable reference, while the Indian consensus provides the locally relevant clinical context. - Apply before going outdoors, following the product label.
- Reapply as directed, especially after swimming or sweating; choose a water-resistant product when those activities are likely.
- Use sunscreen with shade and protective clothing. WHO cautions that sunscreen does not completely block UV and should not be used as a reason to spend longer in the sun. WHO guidance
A simple way to choose
- Start with broad-spectrum coverage. Choose a product that addresses both UVA and UVB, with SPF 30 or higher as the baseline supported by the Indian consensus and IADVL.
- Match it to your exposure. If you spend long periods outdoors, sweat, or swim, consider SPF 50 and a water-resistant formula suited to that activity.
- Account for pigmentation concerns. If melasma or dark spots are a concern, consider a tinted, iron-oxide-containing sunscreen for visible-light protection.
- Choose a formula you can use properly. Skin tolerance, comfort, and ease of reapplication affect whether you apply enough and keep using it.
For a specific skin condition or a persistent reaction to sunscreen, seek individualized advice from a dermatologist.
