Spent Grain vs. Activated Carbon for Removing Contaminants from Water

There is no universal winner. Brewery spent grain is only a feedstock; researchers must pyrolyze it into biochar, chemically activate it into activated carbon, or modify it (for example, with iron) before it becomes an engineered adsorbent. Its performance can be excellent for a particular contaminant under a particular laboratory protocol, but those results cannot be transferred automatically to another pollutant, a household cartridge, or drinking-water treatment. Commercial granular activated carbon (GAC) has a much broader operating history, yet it is also a family of materials whose performance depends on grade, water chemistry and filter design.

What is actually being compared?

The phrase “spent grain” can be misleading. Brewery spent grain is the fibrous residue left after mashing. In the cited water-treatment studies, it is not generally placed into a filter in its raw form. Instead, the residue is converted into a carbonaceous material:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Biochar: spent grain is heated in an oxygen-limited process (pyrolysis). The temperature and residence time determine pore structure, surface chemistry and ash content.
  • Activated carbon: the char receives an additional physical or chemical activation treatment to create more pores and reactive sites. Potassium-hydroxide activation is one example in the cited work.
  • Modified biochar: the surface is given an additional function, such as iron modification for capturing hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI).
  • Commercial GAC: a manufactured comparison category used in treatment systems. GAC products differ in feedstock, activation, particle size, pore distribution and certification status.

A 2018 study record explicitly compared activated carbon made from brewer’s spent grain with commercial GAC materials. That comparison shows that spent grain can be made into a material comparable for testing; it does not show that every consumer cartridge, loose carbon product or homemade char meets a drinking-water standard. The repository record for the 2018 work is the relevant source.

Quick comparison

Question Spent-grain-derived material Commercial activated carbon (including GAC)
Starting point Brewery residue that must be processed Manufactured carbon made from a selected feedstock
Possible forms Pyrolyzed biochar, chemically activated carbon or modified biochar Granular, powdered or other engineered grades
Main advantage Uses a waste stream and can be tailored chemically to a target pollutant Established manufacturing, grading and system-design experience
Main uncertainty Properties vary strongly with pyrolysis, activation and post-treatment “Activated carbon” is not one specification; the grade may not match the contaminant or water
Evidence in the cited studies High removal in selected laboratory dye, antibiotic, pharmaceutical and chromium tests Used as a commercial GAC comparison category, but no specific consumer filter was verified for potable use
Can the result be generalized? No; each result is material- and condition-specific No; a different carbon, bed depth, flow rate or source water can break through sooner

Why adsorption results vary so much

Adsorption is the attachment of dissolved molecules or ions to the surface and pores of a solid. A large measured surface area can help, but it is not a complete quality score. Pore size must fit the contaminant, surface functional groups must interact favorably with it, and the water must allow the contaminant to reach those sites.

Four variables make a direct “which removes more?” ranking unreliable:

  1. Target contaminant: A result for methylene blue cannot be used to predict removal of an antibiotic, a pharmaceutical or Cr(VI). Molecule size, charge and chemistry differ.
  2. Preparation: Raw biomass, ordinary biochar, chemically activated carbon and iron-modified biochar are different adsorbents. Even two chars made from the same spent grain can have very different pore structures.
  3. Water matrix and setup: Clean buffered or ultrapure water usually presents fewer competing substances than wastewater. Batch tests allow long contact; a fixed bed introduces flow, mass-transfer limits and eventual breakthrough.
  4. Operating history: Regeneration, repeated cycles, bed depth, flow rate, pH, temperature and spent-media handling determine whether a promising powder works in a real treatment train.

For that reason, percentage removal, surface area and adsorption capacity should be read as measurements under stated conditions, not as universal specifications.

What the studies found, contaminant by contaminant

Methylene blue and other dyes

A 2026 Desalination and Water Treatment study reported 90.93% preliminary methylene-blue removal with brewery spent-grain biochar. After optimization of its batch conditions, the reported removal exceeded 99.7%. The same work measured a surface area increase from 1.48 m²/g at 300 °C to 69.87 m²/g at 500 °C. Those values show how strongly pyrolysis temperature can change the material, but they are not a guarantee for another dye, another carbon or flowing water. See the 2026 study for the tested protocol.

Methylene blue is often used as a laboratory probe because it is easy to measure. A high result is useful for comparing samples made in the same experiment; it does not certify removal of pesticides, PFAS, metals, pathogens or taste-and-odor compounds.

Antibiotics in batch and fixed-bed tests

A 2026 fixed-bed study tested spent-brewery-grain-derived biochar against sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim and ciprofloxacin. In single-solute tests using buffered distilled water, adsorption efficiencies were higher than in wastewater and mixed-antibiotic tests. Dissolved organic matter competed for sites, while interactions among antibiotics changed their behavior.

The study also examined microwave regeneration. Specific surface area rose from 281 m²/g in regeneration cycle 1 to 462 m²/g in cycle 3. Reported trimethoprim adsorption capacity increased 45% from cycle 1 to cycle 2 and 79% from cycle 1 to cycle 3. These are notable cycle-specific findings, not proof that every regeneration method improves carbon or that a regenerated bed remains safe indefinitely. The complete article is available through the Journal of Water Process Engineering DOI.

The practical lesson is that a material that performs well in clean water can lose capacity in wastewater. A fixed-bed result is more relevant to a column than a batch percentage, but it still needs breakthrough data, an appropriate flow rate and testing with the intended source water.

Hexavalent chromium

For Cr(VI), surface chemistry can matter as much as pore volume. A 2026 study of iron-modified brewery spent-grain biochar reported 99.8% removal under its optimum conditions: seven hours of contact, pH 3 and an adsorbent dose of 2 g/L. The acidic pH and long contact time are essential qualifications. They are not ordinary assumptions for a household filter, and the result does not establish performance at neutral pH or in complex wastewater. The authors identified further practical wastewater work as necessary. Consult the 2026 Results in Chemistry study.

A 2024 study likewise examined porous biochars made from brewery waste for Cr(VI) in aqueous solutions. It recommended additional tests with real wastewater and column adsorption, underscoring the gap between a controlled solution experiment and a continuous treatment system. The study is available at PLOS ONE.

Carbamazepine

An indexed 2020 study used spent brewery grains to produce both biochars and activated carbons. Potassium-hydroxide activation produced materials with surface areas up to 1120 m²/g and maximum carbamazepine adsorption capacities up to 190 ± 27 mg/g in ultrapure water. “Up to” describes the best material and test condition in that work; it is not an expected capacity for unactivated spent grain or a generic carbon cartridge. Ultrapure water also lacks the dissolved organic matter and competing solutes found in most source waters. The abstract is indexed by PubMed.

Surface area figures from this study should not be placed on the same ranking as the 1.48–69.87 m²/g values from the dye study. The materials, activation chemistry, analytical targets and protocols were different.

What broader field evidence says

A 2025 review of 31 pilot-, field- and mesocosm-scale biochar studies found that effectiveness varied with biochar type, target contaminant and treatment technology. That review provides useful caution about scale-up, but its broad biochar findings are not a direct head-to-head test of spent-grain carbon against commercial GAC. How to choose between the options for a real project

Choose by contaminant first

Start with a measured contaminant and concentration range. “Organic contaminants” is too broad for media selection. Identify whether the target is a dye, antibiotic, pharmaceutical, Cr(VI), another metal or a mixture. The laboratory evidence above supports different materials for different targets; it does not supply a universal spent-grain recipe.

Specify the material, not just the label

For spent grain, record the brewery source, washing and drying steps, pyrolysis temperature, residence time, activation reagent, activation ratio, washing procedure, particle size, ash content, pH at the point of zero charge and measured surface area. For commercial GAC, record the product grade, particle-size range, iodine or other capacity specification, bed density and any drinking-water certification. Without these details, two “activated carbons” may not be meaningfully comparable.

Match the test to the intended system

  • Batch screening: useful for comparing candidate materials at controlled dose, pH and contact time. It does not predict filter life by itself.
  • Fixed-bed or column testing: needed when water will flow continuously. Measure breakthrough curves, empty-bed contact time, pressure drop and effluent quality over time.
  • Real-water testing: use the actual wastewater or source water after clean-water screening. Include dissolved organic matter, salts, suspended solids and the full contaminant mixture.
  • Regeneration testing: measure capacity and contaminant release over multiple cycles. A larger surface area after regeneration does not alone prove that adsorbed chemicals were safely destroyed or retained.

Use a decision matrix rather than one headline percentage

Decision question If the answer is “yes” What to verify next
Is the target contaminant and concentration known? Proceed to material screening Analytical detection limit, mixture effects and regulatory target
Has the candidate worked in the actual water matrix? Move toward column testing Breakthrough, competing solutes and seasonal variation
Is the material chemically modified or activated? Treat it as a distinct engineered adsorbent Residual activating chemicals, leachable metals and wash-water disposal
Will the media be regenerated? Plan a recovery loop Capacity after cycles and fate of concentrated contaminants
Is the treated water for drinking? Require a validated, certified treatment design Whole-system testing, microbial protection and compliance documentation

A practical evaluation workflow

  1. Characterize the incoming water. Measure the target contaminant, pH, alkalinity, dissolved organic carbon, turbidity, ionic strength and relevant co-contaminants. Record whether concentrations fluctuate.
  2. Prepare or specify the media precisely. Do not call raw spent grain “activated carbon.” Document pyrolysis and activation conditions, particle size and washing. Obtain a certificate of analysis for commercial GAC.
  3. Run controlled batch screens. Keep dose, mixing speed, temperature, pH and contact time identical across candidates. Report both concentration and mass-normalized capacity, not only percentage removal.
  4. Repeat with real water. Compare clean-water and real-water results to expose competition from organic matter and other solutes.
  5. Build a column test. Use the intended particle size and flow. Track influent and effluent concentrations, pressure drop and the time to the chosen breakthrough limit.
  6. Test regeneration or replacement. If reuse is proposed, quantify capacity, structural changes and contaminant release after every cycle. If single-use media is chosen, define how the spent carbon will be classified and disposed of.
  7. Validate the complete treatment train. Check pretreatment, disinfection, post-treatment plumbing, sampling points and failure alarms. Adsorption alone does not remove every hazard.

Potable-water safety: what these results do not prove

None of the cited removal percentages, surface-area measurements or adsorption capacities by themselves demonstrate that an unverified spent-grain material makes water safe to drink. A laboratory adsorbent can introduce its own risks: ash, residual activation chemicals, dissolved metals, fine particles or previously captured contaminants released during pH changes. Brewery residues can also vary by feedstock and processing history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Drinking-water use requires more than a high removal number. The media and housing need appropriate materials testing, validated contaminant reduction under the intended flow and water chemistry, control of microbial growth, and a replacement or regeneration schedule. A cartridge that lacks independent certification for the claimed contaminant should not be treated as a potable-water device merely because its carbon is described as “biochar” or “activated.”

For non-potable wastewater polishing, the same discipline still matters. Collect and dispose of spent media according to the contaminants it contains; regeneration can concentrate pollutants rather than eliminate them.

Advantages and trade-offs

Potential advantages of spent-grain-derived adsorbents

  • They valorize a plentiful brewery by-product instead of requiring a virgin carbon feedstock.
  • Pyrolysis and activation can be adjusted to create different pore structures and surface chemistries.
  • Modification, such as iron treatment, can target a contaminant that ordinary hydrophobic adsorption may not capture efficiently.
  • Some studies report strong laboratory performance, including more than 99.7% methylene-blue removal after optimization and 99.8% Cr(VI) removal under acidic optimum conditions.

Limitations and risks

  • Manufacturing conditions determine the final adsorbent; “spent grain” is not a consistent specification.
  • High removal in buffered, distilled or ultrapure water can fall in wastewater or mixed-contaminant systems.
  • Batch equilibrium values do not establish column life, pressure behavior or breakthrough timing.
  • Activation and modification add chemicals, washing steps, energy use and potential leaching concerns.
  • Regeneration requires proof that capacity is retained and that concentrated contaminants are safely managed.
  • There is no blanket evidence that a spent-grain product is approved or suitable for drinking-water filtration.

Bottom line for engineers and households

Use spent grain as a promising precursor, not as a drop-in substitute for activated carbon. For a defined contaminant, a well-characterized spent-grain biochar or activated carbon may outperform a commercial GAC grade in a particular test. In another water matrix, the ranking can reverse. Commercial GAC remains the more established comparison category, but its suitability still has to be demonstrated for the exact contaminant, flow and certification requirement.

The defensible choice comes from contaminant-specific, real-water column testing with breakthrough, regeneration and leachability data. Until those checks exist, treat the impressive percentages in the literature as laboratory evidence—not as a promise that any homemade or unverified filter will produce safe drinking water.
