A fast internet speed test does not prove that your NAS can copy files quickly. The test measures your WAN connection to a remote test server; a NAS transfer uses a separate client-to-switch-to-NAS path and then depends on SMB, the NAS processor, filesystem, RAID layout and disks. Your internet can be excellent while the NAS path is limited to a slow cable, a 1GbE hop, hard drives or small-file overhead.
Separate those layers in order. First measure the network with iperf3, then test the NAS storage locally, and only afterward judge SMB results. That sequence follows troubleshooting guidance from QNAP and TrueNAS and prevents an expensive disk upgrade when the actual problem is a cable or switch port.

What an internet speed test actually measures
When a browser speed test reports a high download rate, it is measuring traffic between your device and a selected test server across the internet. It says little about the private path used for a NAS copy:

- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Every hop can impose a lower limit. A wireless segment, a 1GbE switch between 10GbE devices, a damaged cable that negotiates at a lower rate, VLAN or routing overhead, and an incorrectly negotiated NIC can all reduce throughput without affecting your ISP test. Even with a clean network, the NAS may not read or write data fast enough to fill the link.
Use iperf3 to isolate the network before testing SMB
QNAP’s troubleshooting sequence starts with a protocol-independent network test. Run an iperf3 server on the NAS and a client on the computer that performs the copy:

- Install or enable
iperf3on the NAS and start server mode withiperf3 -s. - On the client, connect to the NAS address and run
iperf3 -c NAS_IP. ReplaceNAS_IPwith the NAS’s address. - Repeat with a multi-stream test such as
iperf3 -c NAS_IP -P 4when link aggregation or SMB3 Multichannel is part of the design. - Record the negotiated interface speed, the number of streams, whether the path is wired or wireless, and the units reported by the test.
QNAP’s approximate reference results are about 940 Mbps (117 MB/s) for 1GbE and 9.4 Gbps (1.17 GB/s) for 10GbE. These are vendor reference figures published in 2026, not a guarantee for every NAS, switch, cable or workload. Because iperf3 does not read your NAS disks or run SMB, it measures available network capacity rather than file-copy performance.

- Check link negotiation: confirm the NAS NIC, client adapter and switch port show the intended speed and full duplex. A 100 Mbps or 1GbE negotiation where 2.5GbE or 10GbE was expected identifies the limit immediately.
- Remove Wi-Fi from the test: connect the client by Ethernet. A fast internet plan does not make a wireless hop equivalent to a wired NAS link.
- Test one NIC, cable and switch port at a time: bypass link aggregation and extra switches until the basic path reaches its expected rate.
- Inspect cabling and topology: replace suspect cables, check for a lower-speed switch in the route, and verify that VLAN or routed paths are not introducing an unintended bottleneck.
Only after the simplest wired path performs normally should you add additional adapters, switches or aggregation. A 10GbE adapter cannot deliver 10GbE if one intervening switch port is 1GbE.
When iperf3 is normal, test the NAS storage locally
A normal network result shifts the investigation to the NAS itself. TrueNAS advises confirming local storage performance before judging network bandwidth. Use the NAS vendor’s disk benchmark or fio and keep the workload comparable to the copy that feels slow.

Match the benchmark to the real workload
- Large sequential files: useful for video images, backups and disk-sized archives. Compare sequential read and write results with the expected link rate.
- Small files and metadata: millions of documents, photos or project files require many filesystem operations and can be far slower than one large file, even on the same disks.
- Random access: databases, virtual machines and active project folders stress IOPS and latency rather than headline sequential MB/s.
Report the block size, queue depth, read/write direction and whether caching was enabled. Comparing a single large-file benchmark with a small-file copy can produce apparently contradictory results without either test being wrong.
NAS-side limits that can cap SMB copies
| Factor | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Drive type | HDDs generally have higher seek latency than SSDs, especially for small or random files. | Run separate sequential and random tests; check drive health and sustained write behavior. |
| RAID layout | Parity calculations and rebuild activity can consume resources and reduce available throughput. | Note the RAID level, degraded state and whether a scrub or rebuild is running. |
| Filesystem and features | Compression, encryption, snapshots and checksumming add CPU or I/O work. | Repeat the local benchmark with the production settings and review CPU utilization. |
| Processor and Samba | SMB processing is often lightly threaded; a busy or modest CPU can limit one transfer even when the network is idle. | Watch per-core CPU use during the copy and check whether encryption is enabled. |
| Encryption support | Hardware AES-NI support can reduce the cost of encrypted workloads; without it, encryption may become the ceiling. | Compare CPU load with encryption on and off only where your security policy permits. |
Storage benchmarks that are already below the rate delivered by iperf3 point to drives, RAID, filesystem work or CPU—not to your ISP connection.

Why SMB can be slower than iperf3
SMB adds protocol negotiation, authentication, signing or encryption, filesystem calls and application behavior that iperf3 deliberately omits. A single SMB stream may also be limited by one CPU thread or by the latency of many small operations. Therefore, a 9.4 Gbps network test and a much lower SMB copy are not inherently contradictory.
SMB3 Multichannel can use multiple network interfaces, but it requires compatible client and NAS software, adapters with comparable throughput and storage and CPU resources that can sustain the aggregate rate. Synology’s examples prioritize a 1Gbps wired adapter over a 150Mbps Wi-Fi adapter; the faster wired path wins, but adding interfaces does not remove a disk or processor limit. Obsolete drives or an underpowered CPU can prevent the expected gain.
Choose the upgrade indicated by the measurements
| Finding | Most likely action |
|---|---|
| Negotiated speed is lower than expected or iperf3 is slow | Replace or reconfigure the NIC, cable, switch port or Wi-Fi segment; verify VLAN and routing paths. |
| iperf3 reaches the expected rate but local disk tests are slow | Investigate HDD versus SSD, RAID state, rebuilds, filesystem features and NAS CPU capacity. A NAS-rated CMR hard drive is relevant only when the storage layer is the measured limit. |
| Local storage is fast but one SMB workload is slow | Check SMB version and signing or encryption settings, CPU per-core utilization, permissions and whether the workload consists of small files. |
| Single-stream is limited but multi-stream improves substantially | Review SMB3 Multichannel compatibility and whether every adapter and switch hop supports the intended aggregate rate. |
Buy a 10GbE NAS network adapter only when testing identifies the network as the constraint and every hop—including the client adapter, switch and NAS storage—can support the higher rate. A 2.5GbE or 10GbE switch is justified when the existing switch is the slower hop, not simply because an internet plan advertises a higher speed.

For each change, record the negotiated link speed, wired or wireless path, iperf3 stream count and result, local sequential and small-file storage results, SMB settings, RAID state and CPU utilization. Use the same client, destination share and file set when comparing changes. This prevents a faster result caused by a different workload from being mistaken for an infrastructure improvement.
The practical rule is simple: a good internet test validates the WAN path only. A normal iperf3 result validates network capacity only. The copy rate is the lower-performing combination of network, NAS processing, filesystem, storage and workload, so upgrade the layer that the measurements actually identify.
