To keep a voice conversation from being used for AI training, you must change more than one setting. Disable model-training consent, turn off any separate audio-sharing or audio-improvement control, use a temporary-chat mode for sensitive sessions, and delete the conversation instead of merely archiving it. Those controls affect different data paths: raw audio clips, transcripts, chat history, memories, feedback and safety records.
Retention also differs by provider and by what is being retained. OpenAI states that Voice clips are retained for 30 days, Google says chats made with Gemini Apps Activity turned off remain for 72 hours, and Microsoft says Copilot voice audio is normally not stored at all; feedback audio can remain for up to 48 hours. These figures describe different records, so they are not directly interchangeable.

Why one voice chat can create several kinds of data
Speech-to-speech assistants generally process your microphone input into a transcript, generate a response, and may keep records for history, personalization, safety or service improvement. A single privacy switch rarely governs every copy.
- Raw audio: the microphone clip or stream captured while you speak.
- Transcript: text created from your speech and usually stored like a typed conversation.
- Chat history or activity: the conversation record shown in an app or account dashboard.
- Memory and personalization: facts or preferences extracted for later responses.
- Feedback and quality-review data: material sent when you rate a response, report a problem or opt into improvement programs.
- Safety, security and legal records: limited data that can be retained under provider exceptions even after a user deletes a chat.
Turning off training does not necessarily delete old chats. Deleting a chat does not automatically switch off memory. Disabling memory does not stop the assistant from temporarily processing audio to answer you. Treat each function as a separate control.

Do not read the numbers as a league table. OpenAI’s 30 days concerns stored clips, Google’s 72 hours concerns chats while activity history is off, and Microsoft’s 48 hours concerns feedback audio only.
ChatGPT Voice: settings to change
1. Stop new conversations being used to improve models
- Open ChatGPT and select Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI says new conversations are then not used to improve its models. Existing saved chats remain in your history until you delete them, so this is a forward-looking training choice, not a deletion command.
2. Keep voice and video clips out of training
- Remain in Settings → Data Controls.
- Leave Include your audio recordings turned off.
- Leave Include your video recordings turned off unless you intentionally want to share clips for training.
OpenAI describes these clip-sharing switches as separate from the general model-improvement setting. A conversation can therefore be excluded from general training while an audio-sharing consent is handled independently; check both controls.

Choose Temporary Chat before starting the conversation. OpenAI says temporary chats do not appear in history and do not create or update memories while they remain temporary. Temporary status does not mean the service skips processing needed to answer, detect abuse or meet legal and safety requirements.
4. Delete rather than archive
When the session is over, delete the chat from its menu. Archiving only removes it from the sidebar. OpenAI says deleting a chat triggers deletion of associated voice clips within 30 days, with security, safety and legal exceptions. Its Help Center wording is: “Audio clips from Live and Advanced Voice conversations, and video clips from Advanced Voice conversations, are stored with the transcript that appears in your chat history. Clips are retained for 30 days.”

What the 30-day figure means
The 30-day period applies to the Voice audio and video clips described above, not necessarily every copy of a transcript or every security record. Standard voice audio has a different rule: it is deleted after transcription unless you selected audio sharing for training. The product mode and your consent choice therefore matter.
Google Gemini Live: activity, audio improvement and memory
1. Turn off Gemini Apps Activity
- Open Gemini Apps Activity from your Google account or Gemini privacy controls.
- Select the setting for Keep Activity.
- Turn it off and confirm the change.
Google says future chats then will not appear in your Activity and will not be used to train its AI models, unless you choose to send Google feedback. This setting does not erase earlier activity automatically.

With Keep Activity disabled, Google says chats are still saved for 72 hours. The stated reasons are response processing, feedback and safety. That is a temporary service-retention period, not a promise that the microphone stream is instantly discarded the moment you stop speaking.
3. Disable audio and Live-media improvement use
- Open Gemini Apps Activity and find the option allowing Google to use audio and Gemini Live videos and screenshares to improve services.
- Keep the option off, or switch it off for future activity.
Google says this consent is off by default and is separate from Keep Activity and Gemini for Home. Turning it off stops future improvement use under that setting, but Gemini still needs to process audio to answer your request and protect the service.
4. Delete old activity and review provider access
Delete existing entries in Gemini Apps Activity after changing the controls. Google notes that deletion does not remove activity already reviewed by service providers. Material disconnected from your account can be retained for up to three years, so deleting the visible activity list is not equivalent to erasing every historical review copy.

5. Check memory and use Temporary Chat
Review Gemini’s Memory or personalization controls separately. Gemini can remember facts and preferences until you delete them. Use Temporary Chat for information you do not want added to memory, then remove any existing saved memories from the dedicated memory controls.

1. Turn off both training controls in personal Copilot
- Open your profile or account menu in the Copilot app.
- Open the privacy or data-controls page.
- Turn off Training on conversation activity.
- Turn off Training on voice conversations.
Microsoft says these opt-outs exclude future conversation activities from training. They do not exclude every other possible use, such as product improvement, advertising, safety, security or compliance processing.
2. Disable personalization and memory if required
Turn off Personalization and memory when you do not want Copilot to remember details or use Microsoft usage data for personalization. This setting is independent of training consent.
3. Delete conversation history
Use Copilot’s history controls to delete conversations you no longer need. The cited personal-account article says that experience can retain conversation history for 18 months. That figure applies to the personal app experience described there, not automatically to every Copilot product or account.
4. Know what happens to voice audio
Microsoft’s voice FAQ states: “Text transcripts from voice conversations are stored and managed in the same way as text conversations in the Microsoft Copilot app. No user or Copilot audio is stored.” If you submit feedback, however, Microsoft says the related audio is temporarily stored and deleted after 48 hours.

5. Verify your Copilot edition
The privacy-controls article cited for these switches covers an older personal-account app experience after an August 18, 2026 update. It explicitly does not apply to Microsoft 365 Copilot with a work or school account. Enterprise administrators, organizational retention policies and the Microsoft 365 service can therefore present different controls and timelines. If a switch is missing, identify whether you are signed in with a personal, work or school account before assuming the control has been removed.
A practical privacy lockdown sequence
Use this order whenever you configure a new speech assistant or revisit an existing account:
- Identify the account and product. Personal, work and school editions can have different policies and administrator controls.
- Disable model-training consent. Look for a general conversation-training switch and a voice- or audio-specific switch.
- Disable audio, video or screenshare improvement consent. A provider may place this in a media setting rather than the main training page.
- Turn off memory and personalization. Training opt-out does not remove facts already saved for future replies.
- Choose a temporary mode before speaking. It is more reliable than trying to clean up a sensitive session afterward.
- Delete the conversation. Do not archive it when your goal is removal from visible history and the provider’s deletion workflow.
- Do not submit feedback on a sensitive session. Feedback can create a separate review path and, for Copilot, can temporarily store audio.
- Recheck after app updates. Labels and menu locations change, and an account switch can expose a different privacy page.
What each control does not promise

Common problems and fixes
The training switch is missing
Confirm that you are in the correct account and app. Microsoft’s personal Copilot controls do not automatically apply to Microsoft 365 Copilot for work or school. Google and OpenAI can also expose settings under account-level data controls rather than inside the voice screen. Update the app, sign out and back in, and check the provider’s web privacy dashboard.
I turned off training but old voice chats still appear
That is expected when the switch governs future use. Delete the individual chat or the relevant activity history. Then check memory separately, because a remembered fact can persist after the original conversation is no longer visible.
I archived a conversation and thought it was deleted
Archiving is an organization feature. In ChatGPT it removes the chat from the sidebar but does not initiate deletion of associated clips. Use the delete command instead.

I deleted Google activity but remain concerned about review copies
Google says activity already reviewed by service providers can remain disconnected from the account for up to three years. The account activity page cannot remove that already-disconnected material on demand.
I gave feedback after disabling training
Feedback can be governed by a separate consent path. Google’s wording makes an exception for chats sent as feedback, and Microsoft says feedback audio is temporarily stored for 48 hours. Avoid feedback on sessions containing secrets, and review the provider’s feedback setting before rating a response.
Can a microphone cover or hardware mute erase uploaded audio?
No. A physical mute can prevent a device from capturing new sound while it is engaged, but it cannot delete audio or transcripts already sent to a provider and cannot change training or retention settings. Provider-side controls are required for those actions.

How to interpret retention numbers safely
A retention statement is meaningful only when you identify the object, trigger and exceptions. OpenAI’s 30 days concerns Voice clips stored with transcripts; Google’s 72 hours applies to future chats while Keep Activity is off; Microsoft’s 48 hours applies to feedback audio, while its cited personal experience describes 18-month conversation-history retention. None of these numbers proves that every derivative record disappears at the same time.
Security, safety, legal and quality-review exceptions can extend or change deletion. Keep a written record of the setting you changed, the date, the account type and the conversation you deleted if the audio was sensitive. For employer or school accounts, ask the administrator which retention and discovery rules apply before using voice for confidential work.
The safest default configuration
For routine conversations, disable general training and any separate voice or media-improvement consent, keep memory off unless you need personalization, and delete sessions that contain confidential material. For a one-off sensitive question, start in Temporary Chat, do not send feedback, and verify the conversation is deleted afterward. If the information is regulated, proprietary or capable of identifying another person, do not speak it into a cloud assistant merely because a training switch is available: the service still has to process the audio and may retain limited records for safety, security or legal reasons.
