How Al Simmons became Spawn
A skilled assassin who begins to doubt his missions
Before the supernatural story starts, Al Simmons is a highly trained government assassin. He is effective at his work, but he eventually questions what his missions accomplish and why he is being ordered to kill. That doubt puts him at odds with the people around him and marks the beginning of his break from the life he has been living.

Death and betrayal
An associate has Simmons burned to death. The murder is not a heroic sacrifice or a battlefield accident; it is a deliberate killing that leaves Simmons dead and separated from Wanda. His death is important because the later bargain is motivated by a personal loss, not by a desire for power.
The bargain with Malebolgia
In Hell, Simmons negotiates with Malebolgia. The Spawn: The Eternal manual states the premise directly: “You struck a deal with Malebolgia, ruler of the Eighth Sphere of Hell.” Simmons asks for the chance to return and see Wanda. Malebolgia grants the resurrection, but the price is enlistment as a Hellspawn.
That exchange explains both sides of Spawn’s identity. Simmons chooses to come back, so his return is connected to his own decision; Malebolgia controls the terms, so the new life is also a trap. Hell does not restore the old Al Simmons. It sends back a scarred soldier whose powers and obligations belong to the infernal hierarchy.
Resurrection with a cost
When Simmons returns, he has a living costume and supernatural abilities, but he is physically scarred and missing memories. Those changes signal that resurrection has not restored him to normal life. The costume and powers identify him as a Hellspawn, while the missing memories make his past—and the truth behind his death—something he must recover rather than simply remember.
The manual frames the identity crisis bluntly: “Are you Al Simmons now? No, you are one of the Hellspawn.” For a new player, this is the key distinction. Spawn is Al Simmons, but he is also a transformed being whom Hell expects to obey.

Why Wanda matters to the entire story
Wanda Blake: the reason for the pact
Wanda Blake is Simmons’s beloved former wife. His wish to see her again is the emotional reason he accepts Malebolgia’s terms. Without Wanda, the bargain has no personal motivation; with her, every supernatural event is tied to the ordinary human life Simmons lost when he died.
Terry Fitzgerald: the life that continued without Al
Terry Fitzgerald is Wanda’s current husband. His presence makes Simmons confront a painful fact: Wanda’s life did not stop when Al died. Spawn’s return does not restore the old marriage. Instead, it places him near a family that has changed while he was gone.

Cyan, Wanda and Terry’s daughter, connects Spawn’s afterlife to the next generation of the family. She is one of the human relationships threatened by the supernatural conflict. Her role helps explain why Spawn’s decisions affect more than his own freedom.

Players do not need to treat Wanda as a generic “damsel” or a simple objective marker. She represents the human future Spawn wants to protect while also reminding him that he can no longer return to his former place in it.
Malebolgia, Hell and the debt Spawn is expected to pay
Malebolgia is both patron and owner
Malebolgia is the demon ruler who makes the bargain, resurrects Simmons and expects him to serve in Hell’s army. He offers exactly what Simmons asks for, but on terms that turn the favor into ownership. This is why defeating ordinary enemies does not solve Spawn’s problem: the larger enemy is the system that claims his service.

The Armageddon role
Hell intends to use Spawn as a military asset for its coming Armageddon. The game’s manual-based story presents his missions as part of that pressure. Creatures sent by Malebolgia attack him, and the route through hostile realms is connected to secrets that may lead back to Hell.

Resistance rather than simple revenge
Spawn’s conflict with Malebolgia is not only revenge for being killed. He is resisting the idea that a bargain made in desperation permanently determines what he must become. The game lets the player act out that resistance: survive the realms, learn the truth and pursue a way to confront the ruler who believes Spawn belongs to him.
How the game’s story unfolds
1. Entering a world controlled by the bargain
The game begins from the established condition that Spawn has already returned from death. You are not watching Simmons decide whether to become a Hellspawn; you are controlling the consequences of that decision. His scars, missing memories, living costume and powers are the visible evidence of the bargain.
2. Crossing three realms and different points in time
The manual-based account sends the player through three realms at different points in time. The changing settings are part of the mystery rather than a reason to assume that every scene belongs to one ordinary, linear journey. Treat each realm as a hostile stage in a larger investigation: enemies reveal the reach of Malebolgia’s power, while discoveries point toward the secrets behind Spawn’s condition.
3. Fighting Malebolgia’s creatures
Combat has a narrative purpose. The creatures are not random obstacles unrelated to the plot; they are sent by Malebolgia and demonstrate that Hell is actively trying to direct or contain Spawn. Surviving them shows physical strength, but it does not remove the obligation attached to the pact.

4. Uncovering secrets that lead back to Hell
As Spawn advances, he looks for information that can explain his situation and provide a route toward freedom. The game’s objective is therefore investigative as well as combative. Discoveries connect the realms, the supernatural factions and the possibility of confronting Malebolgia directly.
5. Seeking a confrontation and freedom
The story can ultimately take Spawn toward an attack on Malebolgia. The goal is not to become a better servant; it is to challenge the power that claims him. In practical terms, the player is pushing through hostile territory to reach the source of the debt and test whether a Hellspawn can reject the role assigned to him.

The living costume is part of the Hellspawn transformation, not a normal uniform that Simmons puts on after becoming a hero. His supernatural powers come with the same bargain that gave him a second life. That combination creates a persistent trade-off: the abilities make resistance possible, but they also mark Spawn as a product of Hell.

Game story versus the wider comics mythology
The game uses the recognizable origin of death, a pact with Malebolgia and resurrection as a Hellspawn, but its manual gives the player a specific adventure. Broader Spawn comics add characters, retcons and later developments. Do not assume that an event from the game manual is automatically a scene from the entire comic line, or that every comic character appears in the game.

Why the story still works for first-time players
You can understand the game without knowing every comic retcon because its emotional structure is straightforward. A man dies, makes a desperate deal to see the person he loves, returns with extraordinary power and discovers that the deal has made him property. Wanda supplies the human reason for the choice; Malebolgia supplies the coercive system; the realms and enemies turn that conflict into a playable journey.
