SPAM Hits No. 1 on Steam’s Trending Free Chart: Why This Card-Based Battler Is Taking Off

SPAM, a free-to-play online turn-based card combat game from Ticroco Entreprise, reached No. 1 in Steam’s “Trending Free” category shortly after its launch, according to a Notebookcheck report published on 8 October 2026. The most plausible reason for the attention is how little it asks of a new player: each side fields four creatures, every unit is on the battlefield from the start, and the game costs nothing to download and try. Steam’s own description calls SPAM a turn-based combat game rather than a conventional RPG, so this article uses that wording.

What SPAM is

SPAM is developed and published by Ticroco Entreprise. Steam’s store listing describes it as a “free-to-play online turn-based combat game.” According to that listing, players earn new cards through victories, build a deck for ranked play against players around the world, challenge friends to duels, and upgrade cards through the Tox Shop during matches. The listing also mentions single-player and online player-versus-player (PvP) features. SteamDB records the release date as 7 October 2026 and lists Windows as the supported system.

How the four-creature combat works

Notebookcheck’s account is the most detailed description currently available, and its mechanics come from that report rather than from a developer interview. Its key points are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Four units, all on the board. Each deck has four cards, and all four creatures are on the battlefield at the start of a match.
  • No conventional draw step. Because the whole team is already in play, the match does not rely on drawing cards into a hand as a core mechanic.
  • Abilities and resources decide the fight. Players win by using abilities and resources to defeat the opponent’s four creatures.
  • Combinations matter. The report highlights card combinations as a source of tactical depth.
  • Upgrades mid-battle. Players can buy upgrades in the Tox Shop while a battle is underway.

The format is the feature that most separates SPAM from draw-based deckbuilders, where a larger deck is shuffled and played over several turns. Whether SPAM’s format is better is a matter of taste, and the sources do not compare it directly with other games.

Why it climbed the chart

Notebookcheck, reporting by Marius Müller on 8 October 2026, says SPAM reached the top of Steam’s “Trending Free” category shortly after launch. Steam’s charts change constantly, so treat the No. 1 position as a snapshot from that report rather than a live ranking.

Our reading of the launch attention

Three features make a free game easy to try in a single session, and each one plausibly drives early traffic. The matches are short in unit count, the team is only four creatures, and friend duels give existing players a reason to pull in others. Ranked play adds a reason to return after the first session. This is interpretation based on the listed features, not a measured explanation of the chart movement.

Rank #2
Cards Against Humanity
  • Cards Against Humanity is a party game for horrible people.
  • Now version 2.0! Over 150 new cards since the last version.
  • Contains 500 white cards and 100 black cards for maximum replayability.
  • Includes a booklet of sensible game rules and preposterous alternate rules.
  • America's #1 gerbil coffin.

Launch figures as reported

Notebookcheck reported two launch-period figures for SPAM in 2026. These are the outlet’s numbers, not totals checked against Steam’s live data:

  • More than 7,000 concurrent players at peak.
  • About 700 Steam user reviews one day after launch, 87% of them positive.

Free to play, and what the purchases are

Steam’s listing marks SPAM as free-to-play and discloses both “In-game purchases” and “Chance based in-game purchases.” The chance-based element means some purchases give random results, so it is worth understanding before spending money. The sources do not indicate that purchases are required to play. The table below sets Steam’s listing against Notebookcheck’s account.

Early reception and its limits

Notebookcheck describes early reviews as mostly positive. Players praised the tactical depth despite the small team size, along with the card combinations and hand-drawn art. The same reporting notes criticism of the tutorial and of monetization. This is one outlet’s account of the first days after launch. It is not a settled consensus, and it is not a current review score.

Who it suits

  • Players who want short, tactical online matches with a small team and no draw step.
  • Players who are comfortable with a free game that offers optional chance-based purchases.
  • Players with a Windows PC that meets the listed minimums, who can try the game without paying.

Players who dislike monetization in free games, or who want a larger deck and traditional draw mechanics, will likely find less to like, based on the reception and mechanics described above.
