SpaceX has explored drilling for natural gas in Texas, but the available reporting does not establish that it has started drilling or received approval for a new well. A separate proposal for an eight-mile pipeline would bring gas to Starbase; that is a supply plan, not a drilling permit.
What SpaceX has proposed—and what it has not confirmed
Reuters reported on June 25, 2026, that SpaceX affiliate Lone Star Mineral Development had filed plans for Starpipe, an approximately eight-mile (13-kilometer) natural-gas pipeline to Starbase. Reuters said the filing projected a service date of January 26, 2027. That date is a projection from the filing, not confirmation that the pipeline has been built or entered service.

The same Reuters report said the company had signed more than 100 paid-up oil-and-gas leases with Texas property owners since 2023, based on Reuters’ review of Cameron County land records. It described drilling as a longer-term plan under exploration. Leases can give a company rights to explore or develop property, but they do not by themselves show that a well has been drilled or that regulators have approved one.

Has SpaceX started drilling for natural gas in Texas?
The reporting cited here does not establish that new SpaceX drilling has begun. Nor does it identify a specific, currently approved drilling permit for SpaceX or Lone Star Mineral Development. That is a limit of what these sources establish, not proof that no relevant filing exists.

- Easy Installation - simply plug-in to a standard, 120V outlet in your home
- 9-volt battery backup provides protection during a power outage
- Digital LED display shows the level of carbon monoxide the CO alarm is sensing or states "GAS" when explosive gas is present
- 85-decibel alarm announces when carbon monoxide or explosive gas is detected
- Peak Level Memory records the last time carbon monoxide was detected or when the unit was last tested
For an up-to-date answer, the relevant records are the Railroad Commission of Texas’s drilling-permit and well-record research tools. The commission regulates oil-and-gas exploration, production, and transportation. Searches should include Lone Star Mineral Development and relevant Cameron County records; a lease, pipeline filing, or generator proposal is not a substitute for checking well and permit records.
How the pipeline differs from drilling
| Project or activity | What it does | What the reporting establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Starpipe pipeline | Would transport natural gas to Starbase for use at the site. | Reuters reported a filed plan for an approximately eight-mile (13-kilometer) line and a projected service date of January 26, 2027. Neither figure confirms completion or operation. |
| Oil-and-gas leases and exploration | Could provide access to land for exploration and potential development. | Reuters reported more than 100 paid-up leases since 2023 and characterized drilling as a longer-term plan under exploration. The report does not establish active drilling or an approved new well permit. |
A pipeline can deliver gas produced by someone else; it does not show where the gas came from. Conversely, leasing land does not establish that a pipeline has been built. The two reported developments are related to SpaceX’s interest in gas, but they are separate activities with different regulatory records.

- Combustible Gas Leak Detector: The TopTes PT199 detects natural gas, methane, propane, butane, LPG, and more, pinpointing leaks to reduce the risk of explosion, keeping your family and property safe
- Visual and Audio Gas Alarm: Visual and audio alarms trigger within 0.5 seconds of gas detection. The alarm intensifies with gas concentration, and the LCD screen turns red when gas levels are high
- Batteries Included and Easy to Use: The TopTes PT199 includes 2x AAA batteries and is ready after a 30-second warm-up. The low battery indicator activates below 2.4V, and it auto-powers off after 5 minutes without operation or gas detection
- Compact Design: Pocket-sized, non-slip, and easy to carry or store in the included bag. Ideal for RV owners, DIYers, and homeowners with gas appliances. Saves you from paying hundreds of dollars in diagnostics or wasting gas in an undetected leak
- What You Get: 1x PT199 Gas Leak Detector, 1x Storage Bag, 2x AAA Batteries, 1x User Manual. Detection range: 50-1,000 ppm (based on methane). Detection distance: 1-5cm
Why the Starbase generator filing is not a drilling approval
A Texas Commission on Environmental Quality filing for Starbase proposed five natural-gas electric generating units to support the site’s liquid-oxygen facility. The filing cited the remote location and limited or uneconomic access to the grid. It concerns burning gas to generate electricity at the site, not extracting gas from a well.
Environmental review of generating equipment and authorization to drill are distinct matters. The generator filing therefore should not be treated as evidence that SpaceX has permission to drill, or that it plans to supply the generators with gas from its own wells.

- Combustible Gas Leak Detector: PT177 is a useful little tool that helps every household with gas appliances to quickly and easily pinpoint the leakage of combustible gas including LPG, methane, ethane, propane, butane, natural gas, coal gas, etc. Important Warm-Up Notice: Before use, the PT177 must be powered on and warmed up for 30 seconds in a clean, gas-free environment to ensure accurate detection results
- Visual and Audible Alarms: PT177 gas detector requires a 30-second auto-calibration after powering on and can detect gas and trigger an alarm within 0.5 to 3 seconds. Five red LEDs and a 75 dB audible alarm intensify as gas concentration increases
- Pocket sized with a pocket clip that allows you to carry it in your shirt pocket. The included storage bag makes the natural gas detector easy to store. It is a convenient tool for RV enthusiasts, DIYers, homeowners with gas appliances, etc
- User Friendly Features: When the battery voltage is below 2.4 volts, the power indicator light will flash to remind you to replace the battery in time. If inactive for 5 minutes without operation or detecting gas, the PT177 will automatically turn off
- What You Get: PT177 Gas Leak Detector, a drawstring storage bag, two AAA batteries, and a user manual
What a Texas oil-and-gas consultant said
Texas oil-and-gas consultant Stan Lindsey told Reuters: “I’m not saying it’s beyond the realm of possibility … it’s possible they got a really nice prospect.” Lindsey’s comment describes a possibility; it is not confirmation of a drilling decision, a discovery, or a permit.
