The claim comes from Wccftech, which published it on Oct. 5, 2026 and attributed it to an outside expert’s interview and posts. SpaceX has not announced it.
What was reported, and what wasn’t
Wccftech’s Ramish Zafar wrote that SpaceX is exploring in-house fiber-optic equipment for Starlink and potentially data centers. The report also says SpaceX is looking at alternative sources for optical transceivers because of US-China supply concerns. The article credits an expert interview and post on WK Substack. The X posts it links to returned access errors when we tried to open them, so the underlying expert material could not be checked.

We found no direct SpaceX statement confirming a cable or fiber manufacturing plan. No named person’s quote about the plan could be verified. Treat the initiative, the supplier details and the rationale as attributed reporting, not company policy.

According to the cited expert, SpaceX currently sources from Corning, Hengtong and Yangtze Optical Fiber and Cable (YOFC). Wccftech describes Hengtong and YOFC as Chinese makers of fiber and transceivers. None of the sources we reviewed independently confirm SpaceX contracts, purchase volumes or current vendor relationships.

A separate Wccftech report from Aug. 4, 2026 names Coherent and Lumentum as US optical-component makers that could benefit from a possible supply-chain shift. It does not say they supply SpaceX. That is industry context, not evidence of a commercial relationship.
The data-center numbers
The report includes an AI data-center plan of 10 GW. It also includes the expert’s estimate that 60% of that capacity would serve SpaceX, xAI and Tesla, with the rest offered to outside AI companies. SpaceX’s prospectus passages we reviewed do not establish these figures. Read them as a reported plan and an estimate, not as deployed capacity.

Why the idea is plausible
SpaceX’s June 5, 2026 EU prospectus describes vertical integration as part of how the company operates. It also describes AI compute infrastructure that starts on Earth, with a goal of extending to space. That makes in-house supply control a believable strategy. It does not confirm a fiber-cable plan.
The prospectus gives the scale of the Starlink network. These are company-reported figures as of March 31, 2026, not independent measurements:

SpaceX also said it expected to start deploying next-generation V3 satellites in the second half of 2026. They are designed for 1 Tbps of downlink capacity each, and a Starship launch could carry up to 60 of them. These are plans and design targets. The prospectus alone does not show they have been achieved.
One caution: the prospectus says Starlink delivers “fiber-like” speeds. That phrase compares service quality. It says nothing about SpaceX using any particular terrestrial fiber cable.

Cable versus transceiver
The two are easy to confuse. Optical fiber carries data as light. A transceiver converts electrical signals to optical at one end and turns received light back into electrical signals at the other. Wccftech links transceivers to both communications and data-center supply chains. Separate coverage notes that transceivers must be tested against network switches, digital signal processors and the wider network design.

Making fiber or cable is a materials and manufacturing-scale problem. Making or switching transceiver suppliers adds a compatibility and qualification burden. Retail patch cables are a different category from the industrial fiber systems and data-center modules at issue.

How to judge the vertical-integration thesis
These are our comparison points, not reasons SpaceX has given for the rumored initiative:

- Cost and scale: whether in-house production would be cheaper at the volumes involved.
- Supply control: reduced exposure to geopolitical and export-restriction risk, which is the concern the report cites.
- Qualification burden: especially for transceivers, which must work with specific switches and network designs.
- Status of the numbers: whether a capacity or schedule figure is a target, an announced plan or an operating asset.
What to take away
- The cable idea is reported, not confirmed by SpaceX.
- Supplier names and data-center allocations come from one outside expert, relayed by Wccftech, and could not be verified.
- The prospectus shows Starlink’s scale and a vertical-integration approach, but says nothing specific about fiber manufacturing.
- V3 deployment and 10 GW capacity are plans or estimates, not current operating facts.
