SpaceX moved Super Heavy booster B21 onto the Pad 2 launch mount at Starbase, Texas, on September 21, 2026. Two days later, the launch tower’s chopsticks lifted Starship Ship 41 and stacked it on top of the booster. The sequence prepared the pair for the planned Starship Flight 14, although the launch date remained subject to final Federal Aviation Administration approval in contemporary reporting.
How the stacking operation unfolded
- September 20–21: B21 left SpaceX’s assembly building shortly before midnight local time on September 20. Spaceflight Now reported that the booster reached the Pad 2 launch mount about two hours later, on September 21, and was placed on the mount.
- September 23: SpaceX used the launch tower’s chopsticks to lift Ship 41. The 52-meter (171-foot) spacecraft was then carefully positioned on top of B21, with the operation taking nearly 5.5 hours from lift to placement, according to Spaceflight Now.
The distinction matters: the reported chopstick lift involved Ship 41 during stacking. B21 had already been transported from the assembly building and placed on the launch mount; the chopsticks did not lift the booster onto the pad.
Vehicle dimensions and roles
| Vehicle | Role | Reported size | Operation in this event |
|---|---|---|---|
| Super Heavy B21 | First-stage booster | 236 feet (72 meters) tall and 9 meters (29.5 feet) in diameter | Moved to Pad 2 and placed on the launch mount on September 21 |
| Starship Ship 41 | Upper-stage spacecraft | 52 meters (171 feet) tall | Lifted by the tower chopsticks and stacked on B21 on September 23 |
SpaceX describes Starship and Super Heavy together as a reusable transportation system intended to carry crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon and Mars. B21 is the first-stage booster; Ship 41 is the spacecraft mounted above it for flight.
How large is B21?
B21’s reported 9-meter (29.5-foot) diameter is more than twice the 3.7-meter (12-foot) diameter of a Falcon 9. That is a size comparison only: Falcon 9 and Starship use different vehicle architectures and the two rockets do not have equivalent roles.

What this meant for Starship Flight 14
SpaceX’s launch listing showed Flight 14 planned for September 28, 2026, from Pad 2 at Starbase. However, Spaceflight Now reported on September 21 that the date depended on final FAA approval. The FAA project page, last updated September 2, describes the agency’s Starship-Super Heavy regulatory work at the Boca Chica launch site, but it does not establish whether final launch authorization had been granted by the time of the September 28 listing.
That means the completed stack demonstrated launch-site preparation, not confirmation that liftoff was authorized or guaranteed. Launch timing and regulatory status can change, so the official SpaceX listing and FAA project information are the appropriate references for a current status check.
